It's really great phrasing as a drummer, but it's still quintuplets in 4/4
@@jakefacine ive never really found dance of eternity to be that complicated, yeah it has a bunch of time signature changes but rhythmically and technically still pretty simple. (at least compared to stuff like aal)

When the time sequences are so sick, you can't even bang to it, you know it's good music!
And remember that there's no Bass played. But their guitars got so many strings that there is no one needed. Otherwise your ears would start immediately bleeding out your brain. A legend tells that on their first audition looking for a Bass Player 3 men died. What led them to the conclusion to play without...
There is bass (or programmed bass from a plug-in as in the latest album) on every album, but it's never in the forefront - as, like you said, it doesn't need to be. Sometimes Javier plays it, sometimes Tosin, sometimes Misha, sometimes it's programmed, depends on the album. There's a recent video of Tosin showing how he used a MIDI bass plug-in on the latest album (which is the only one that has not used real bass).
When they play live, they use backing tracks for the synths. I have no idea if they also include the bass parts.
Not necessary for ears to bleed out ... Meshuggah uses 8 string guitars too still they have a bassist
Definitely recommend a live performance next. It has to be seen to be believed. Three amazingly talented musicians.

Two guys with 8 string guitars need no bass! It is absolutely insane what three people can create! This complexity between Jazz and Djent and Progressive Rock. Tosin Abasi ist the one and only successor of Alan Holdsworth!
