This song is about staying true to yourself and remembering to stay focused on your goals. Life will pull you many directions at once. If you follow the whims of pop culture, friends, or even family there’s a chance you could start losing your own identity. Social media, current events and family pressure are often nagging you with demands of what you “should” do. The deafening barrage of distractions need to be quieted so you can hear from within what’s best for you and what you want to do. Looking after your own needs isn’t selfish. It’s necessary. To be a happy, compassionate, loving person you must first love yourself and be working toward being the best version of yourself you can be. You can’t be a fully realized version of yourself if you are constantly bending to the will of others, compromising your beliefs, or saying yes to requests from attention stealing distractions that will lead you away from your path. You can feel ok about saying I won’t- won’t bend, compromise, or give into distractions. Because standing up for who you are will not cause you to lose your compassion and empathy for others. In fact it can help you understand other people’s journey and respect the boundaries they may put up to stay on their own path. So, I say Don’t Bend when someone tries to push you, but do it for peaceful, honorable reasons.
