I've been skating with PURPOSE more often now despite other's suggestions to push and go as hard as I can just to go "fast". I love your perspective and content 👍
Thanks so much. That's amazing to here. I 100% used to go all out everyday from minute one till I dropped. When I was like 16 I was a speed guy too. Then I started hanging out with people who specialize in progression. High performers don't focus on speed and "going hard". You feel like you're putting in work but getting tired and getting better are two different things. There is a place for going all out but it's not every second of every practice. It's actually harder to slow down and get the basics because it takes discipline. Staying consistent and focusing on technique is hard because it takes patience. Taking critiques is hard because it takes a humble spirit. Looking at your skill objectively and putting it against other skaters is hard because it takes awareness. Freestyling to your favorite song and judging yourself on how exhausted feel or how fast you feel you're going is the easy part. Ironically, going hard and focusing on speed will be the reason a lot of people will never be able to do anything with any amount of speed. You can't maneuver fast with bad footwork, you get the footwork by focusing.
I have been watching soooo many videos. As a dancer the thought of getting injured fills me with fear. I’m a beginner skater and I keep hearing people say “if your not falling, your not skating” or “you will fall”, this video is like freedom, your drills are great. No need to fall, just get strong and steady...it wins the race Also watching your videos makes me think of “The 36th chamber of Shaolin”
Idk how you don’t have more views. Your honesty in these videos is so useful. I appreciate your advice soo very much. -With love, a skater who is getting back into it after years of stopping for over 10 years
Thanks so much for the advice on this video. I was starting to get a little discouraged because I'm not very good at tricks like other "beginners". But I never started out learning tricks, I've just been focusing on actually skating, and learning the basics and gaining strength and coordination by just skating around tennis courts like they're rinks. It's not as glamorous on social media, but it'll make me a better athlete in the long run. Thanks for the motivation!
Your personality is great and perfect for these videos! You are echoing what I’ve believed in for twenty years! Please teach everyone this stuff. You’re doing such a great job. Please do a video on skate etiquette, rink etiquette!
Love this, needed this talking to, thank you. Working hard on getting smooth, getting my edges in, beginning to build the muscle for backwards skating . There's so many wibbly skaters showing off their shoot the duck on insta feeling conflicted but this helped me get my attitudes straight.
This. This was the best video about skating I have seen. Your skills, I can dream of one day. For now, I have sloppy footwork to get me front to back, because I love skating backwards. Last session was my first time saying "screw what anyone thinks" and trying to go back and forth and back and forth in short bursts (just basic open book stuff). But when I take 15 minutes to go goof off in the side room of our rink, just doing figure 8 stuff, I am always a million times more confident on the rink. I haven't made it a drill, but I need to. Warm up on the rink, go do figure 8 and circles in the side room then go mess around with enjoying the rink and the music. Thank you for sharing your words and ideas, truthfully more helpful than muscle through how to videos.
TY 👏 for a (finally) great, honest skating tutorial! I really felt that when you mentioned chickening out with transitions 😔. In a ocean full of online (beginner) skate videos, it's nice to learn from a pro without the B.S. I just really enjoy your honesty and the way you teach
I've been skating for about two months and totally agree. For Me, I don't really do "cool" tricks, but I am very comfortable backwards skating and familiar with working my edges in a purposeful way. However, my transitions need WORK! I loved that you said we should be drilling our transition by actually LIFTING our feet up when "opening the book". I haven't been doing that, so I feel like that's probably the reason why. Thank you for making these videos!! You're really helping us new skaters, and I'm sure OG skaters as well!! ☺
I skated in rinks as a kid but just as like a birthday party activity, and started skating outside with others late last year. This video makes me feel so seen!!!!! I feel like I'm doing something when I'm just turning around or skating backwards and everyone around me is doing like..... Thrice that.
This is the video I needed!! I've been practicing (slower) transitions for a month but always caught myself hesitating when I picked up speed. Before this video, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to be drilling transitions so much or to practice outside my comfort-- this really helped change my mindset. Thank you!!
this was a great talk!! i'm one of the straight-line outdoor skaters and i will be adding circles and figure eights to my practice now. super useful and entertaining!
Thank you sooo much for this video! You did an awesome job of breaking everything down even beyond the basics by bringing up intention and mindset, I'm going into my next skate session with a new frame of mind!
Who skates in a square outside? If anything I think I turn more outside the rink (coming from an ex-ice skater who used to skate in a rink all the time) because I’m turning all kinds of directions and all kinds of sized circles since I don’t have to worry about others going in just one direction
I'll put it on my list. I have something similar but it's not specifically isolated. I'm developing a page known as Rhythm Skating specifically known as Rhythm Skating. I'm going to link it on my profile and start making post about it so when it drops, it will be on there. Thanks for the question.

@19:59 is the best advice “Take it slow so you can grow” 🙌🏾 🎯
Thanks for pointing that out. I'll remember to use that phrasing again.
Rink skating: spend all of the time skating. "We dont go take pictures in the grass."
I laughed so hard at this. Thank you

Easily one of the best skating videos I've ever seen. Love your channel!
Rookie skater here. The first 2 seconds of this video had me cracking up. And you dropped jewels throughout. I’ll be tuning in regularly!
Also I’m from Louisiana so the boosie and juvenile references hit different 😂
Thanks for the support.

This is the deepest video about roller skating I've seen this far!

So much knowledge in this video. Thank you for sharing!
I'm glad it helped. Skating those patterns really is a cheat code. That's not marketing material LOL

The last part of the vid is the one I need to embedded in my brain. I focus on jumping to advance steps when I need my fundamentals locked in 😖
Awareness is key. How's your journey going?

Can you make a video about how to skate in an eight?
I'll put it on my list. I have something similar but it's not specifically isolated. I'm developing a page known as Rhythm Skating specifically known as Rhythm Skating.

Hi. Very informative. What brand of wheels do you use for outside skating vs inside and what type of bearings are you using? Please and thank you.
I use very soft wheels outdoors, 78A boardwalk wheels. They grip and go over everything
@@seffievondionysus3198 thank you. Have a blessed day.
