I've been playing drums for 17 years and love the sound of drums, but I almost always play either using earplugs or earbuds with the track playing. I play extremely loud and would have a severe headache after a 4h drumming session.

It's the cymbals that are the loudest part. Drum kits usually produce about 130db.

The cymbals aren't the loudest, the snare drum is. But the cymbals are at a frequency that is very unpleasant to the ear.

Use earplugs or earbuds or over ear cans will help. Never play at high volumes without hearing protect
