  • BILLY WILDER (1906-2002) was a close personal friend of Charles and Ray Eames. They collaborated with him on his films THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS and CHLOE IN THE AFTERNOON, and he supplied an important image for their film, GLIMPSES OF THE USA, and introduced them to Orson Welles who did the narration for another Eames film.
Billy Wilder was the first person in history to win 3 Academy Awards as Producer, Director and Screeenwriter, which he won for THE APARTMENT (1960). He was nominated for 21 Academy Awards, and won six times. SOME LIKE IT HOT, STALAG 17, DOUBLE INDEMNITY, SUNSET BOULEVARD, and WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION are some of his other classic films.
This video is an excerpt from the Eames Office Oral Histories, interviews with staff, family and friends of Charles and Ray Eames, filmed by Eames Demetrios between 1988 and 1990. Stay tuned to our channel for more of these Oral Histories.
