after listening to the song on repeat for 24 hours i am beginning to think that this may NOT be a love song ...although i questioned it for the first 12 or so hours
I dunno it is a song, I also love this song. Though I have no idea if it could be a love song from that perspective, even upon your 9 months and 30 more hours Can any of us really say what love is?
Well...I suppose that is up for interpretation... I mean Just because I thought it was a song, does not in fact mean it was actually a song. Perhaps it was always just a message. or poetry... I mean the artist defines a song as does interpretation, But I am sure 50% of people see a rant from a permanent agitated Johnny. you sir raise some interesting points in this back and fourth.
I think when he says "Are you ready to grab the candles. Out of the cupboard. No television." He's referring to the early 70s power blackouts that made our life a misery in 70s Britain. At our house the tv would go off and my Nan always made sure I was ready to grab the candles and light them.
I think I read on Songfacts that one of Johnny's higher-ups asked him to "make a radio friendly love song," and in return he wrote this song bashing big business's ego and know-it-all demeanor. He also later on said he couldn't believe this was PIL's biggest hit since it was the most "spiteful" song he'd ever written.
After listening to thousands of songs with intelligible and unintelligible lyrics my ears just go for the beat. If the beat is good I'll listen to the lyrics. If that's good too then the song is a hit. To me this song got the juice so it's a hit.

Never noticed before but relistening to this gem, Johny's dynamics in this song are brilliant - oscillating between soft and tuneful and snarling punk bombast with shades in between. He doesn't really usually try to carry a tune so people underrate him as a vocalist, but he's a genius at what he does and it's always so memorable.
If I remember correctly this song was written after he was screwed over financially by some of his business partners and how he had to “change his ways when money applies” and how he is not in love with the idea of having to do that.
We used this song in a play I did in high school. It had nothing to do with the plot really, except as something for some of the characters to lip sync to. They were supposed to be in a rock band for one of the scenes, (but at the same time they were also birds like the rest of the characters). It was a weird play. (Oh, and we picked it after hearing it on a local college station while painting the set.)
Sitting at the creativity table and saying I've got a new song and the rest around the table say oh really how does it go? Then in the short span of about 3.2 seconds John Lydon sings This Is Not A Love Song while that 3.2 second guitar riff plays..... Then a silent stare at the rest of the table..... You're going to need more than that if you're going to have a song Johnny. John Lydon turns to the camera and smiles and says no I won't!
Gotta love John, he's done everything HIS way! He even reclaimed his Irishness by entering the Irish National Song contest in the expectation (!) that he'd win, thereby gaining a Eurovision Song Contest place! He didn't get there but he should've won!
I really hope there is a circle of hell where this is played on repeat. No one is allowed into the circle save for anyone and everyone responsible for this catchy affront to humanity.
How dare you soil the name of the most skilled and experienced bassist that ever drew a breath? What, do you think Johnny just pulled a guy he squatted in a derelict house when he was a teenager with off the streets to be the bassist for the most influential British band that ever set foot on our fair, fair planet?
If you mean Sid by all of this, he wasn’t too bad they made it work until the US tour. John has said it many times. But Glen was amazing too but we know how that turned out.
after listening to the song on repeat for 24 hours i am beginning to think that this may NOT be a love song ...although i questioned it for the first 12 or so hours
upon later analysis with an additional 30 hours of listening i am beginning to think this "could" indeed be a love song..thoughts on theory?
I dunno it is a song, I also love this song. Though I have no idea if it could be a love song from that perspective, even upon your 9 months and 30 more hours Can any of us really say what love is?
it is very interesting because i think that this could possibly be love in the form of a song but then again is it a song?
Well...I suppose that is up for interpretation... I mean Just because I thought it was a song, does not in fact mean it was actually a song.
Perhaps it was always just a message.

I always love Johnny's antics and I like those glasses.
That hair and those glasses with that suit make pretty cool combination, he looks like a character from Trainspotting or Eureka Seven
I guess he was an influence for Trainspotting that vibe :s
This may or may not be a love song, need more info.

Once you see the cop on the motorcycle waving people off from behind Johnny's car, it's the only thing about the video you can focus on.

They all use off duty or retired cops. A music video has a smaller budget, so they were probably unlikely to be able to close off traffic.
