  • Silent footage of the Lewisham Riots of 1977. This was a clash between the Anti-Nazi League, the National Front and the Police. For those not aware: the National Front was a racist organisation that was a sort of precursor to the current bigots operating under the banner of the BNP.
    The NF had decided to march through Lewisham (than as now an ethnically diverse area of London) in an attempt to highlight the plight of the white British (jobs, housing et al).
    It is curious to note that Britain in 1977 was plagued by recession, unemployment and immigration scare stories - looking at today's papers it is easy to conlude that what goes round comes round. (www.guardian.co.uk/politics/20...)

    Would love to use some of this in a film - does anyone know where I might achieve licensing of some clips from this video?

      I would just use it and not worry about licensing technicalities, nothing is likely to come of it.

    Respond to this video...I'm in and out of Lewisham all the time and still got loads of friends there. One of them is a local councillor who has the pulse of his community so I am well informed about the community. I worked for Lewisham Council for over 4 years in housing and think the clients I came into direct contact with represented a true reflection of the ethnic mix there. The Woodpecker Estate and Pepys Estate are two peculiarities. Sydenham is easily majority local 'Whites'.

    @182fooz At Lewisham Hill the NF march was disbanded whence they were taken away on some hastily arranged trains that picked them up off an embankment. An Hour after the last NF had gone the police informed the objectors the NF was gone. In that hour the centre of Lewisham had been a riot zone with the police trying 2clear streets 4a march that no longer existed. When word got out the people stopped fighting the police & march away 2Catford.

    Guess where I was that day... Lewisham High Street! I was working at the RACS (Co-Op) department store. We shut up shop, went up onto the roof and got a panoramic view of the police and the anti-nazis apparently trying to kill each other. (Well, that's what it looked like).
    Being an innocent little lad of only eighteen, I'd never seen so much violence in my life and I remember feeling numb when it was all over. Hope i never see anything like this again!

    @182fooz The objective of the NF march was 2go south up the hill at Clifton Rise, 2get along Lewisham Way 2Lewisham & down 2Rushey Green 2Catford Town Hall. Because they could not get the NF up Clifton Rise the cops brought them up the next street east between the large group at Clifton Rise & another at New Cross Station. The 2groups converged from east & west 2surround the head of the NF march. The cops battled the demonstrators all the way 2Lewisham Hill in attempts 2get2 the NF to Catford.

  • @littlebigbrain
    @littlebigbrain 13 років тому

    @fackitWhynot The NF failed in their objective to march from New Cross to Catford Town Hall. The locals stopped their march at Lewisham hill and the cops allowed the NF to have their speeches there and then bundled them onto trains and away from Lewisham.

    "The NF had decided to march through Lewisham (than as now an ethnically diverse area of London)" - Ethnically diverse, yes, I was stabbed in Catford just down the road in the 70s. The police told me crowds of blacks had been all carrying knives because they were fighting among themselves as to which gang had the right to rob people outside the Catford cinema. There was practically zero white knife crime then. A wonderful ethnic import.

      That's amazing to hear, but if the Police were aware that the cinema in Catford was being targeted by mugging black yobs then why did they not direct their attentions to it and the immediate vicinity in order to counteract the gangs in the first place ?

    • @404sandmonkey
      @404sandmonkey 8 років тому +3

      +MRROCKET23 why are you asking me, was I Chief of Police? It was a regular place for trouble, I suppose they did keep an eye on it. The policeman who came to visit me in hospital told me about the black gangs all being tooled that night. Maybe they only found out afterwards, I have no idea. My dad used to tell me not to go to Catford, it was full of racial tension even then, but who listens to their parents? I'd bene drinking in the Catford Ram and was driving in Brownhill Road and tried to stop a mugging I saw happening (old white guy, he actually only had lost a fiver, but I didn't know. Disgustingly he never even reported the incident and my stabbing to the police although he saw the whole thing. I got out of my car and the black kid pulled a knife and it was in me before I even knew, I'm not a fighter and not suss. I had asked the old guy if he wanted to take the kid to the police and he just said 'they are guests in our country'. I guess he knew about the knife already....).
      I had to drive myself to Lewisham Hospital because my mate couldn't drive and his girlfriend was panicking. I drove to Hither Green first and my mate ran in and then out shouting 'no casualty'. I almost died. After a few years I got Pds,1300 from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board (don't know if it still exists) and proposed to my now wife on the strength of it. So you could say it ended my life anyway,...

    @182fooz A small reason may have a large symbolic rational. The tactics of Northern Ireland street riot control was the model & the Police wanted to get shields in situ in mainland Britain. A peaceful demonstration would not have served that purpose. In the 33 years since we have seen all sorts of riot control systems being imported from a terrorist environment with those tactics being imposed on civil non terrorists demonstrations on the Mainland. The territorial are just the SPG with knobs on.

    @182fooz I lived in Lewisham between 1976 & 1987 & moved to Stepney, just across the river from Lewisham, in 1988. The riot was in 1977 & the ethnic mix was as I described then. What has happened in Lewisham since 1987 is a product of mass immigration of the last 34 years since the riot, There were a lot of Goldsmith Univercity students at the demo taking on the NF. Most of them U would not have thought would fight on the streets to keep the NF out. I could tell U loads of stories of that day.

    I believe that 'cavalry charge' at 2:04 went from Lewisham high Street and into Lee High Road. If this is the case then I would have been out of shot to the left and looking down on it from the roof of the RACS. This particular scene seems to have been burned into my memory. I remember watching this on TV when I eventually got home.
    My opinion at the time (as is now) was that the NF march shouldn't have gone ahead especially in an area that had a large proportion of immigrants. Fucking madness!!

    I was there, at Clifton Rise (between New Cross Gate and New Cross Stations) In fact I am standing by the bus shelter on the railings as the coppers brought the NF onto New Cross Road, and Lewisham, Ladywell and Catford. The cops got a beating and contrary to what most of the establishment and the NF/BNP say the vast majority of people were like me locals trying to stop these purvayers of hate from marching to Catford. We stopped them at Lewisham Hill. Great to see the cop bike alight again.

  • @littlebigbrain
    @littlebigbrain 13 років тому

    @182fooz At Ladywell a dozen SPG vans drove in2 the back of the march scattering the demonstrators. The SPG officers piled out of the vans & began attacking everyone in sight. Chasing demonstrators through a graveyard and down side streets. The demonstrators split up into ever and ever smaller groups and the police did likewise. Eventually you had 2/3 officers chasing 20 people or so & the demonstrators would turn & face the ‘pursuing’ cops. Retreat!!! Was the new order

    @fackitWhynot The area was not mostly non white. The March was suppose to be from Clifton Rise, New Cross Gate to Catford Town Hall. The area then and probably still is now in the majority indiginous White. If you go to my video London Facts you will see the census figures for 2001 some 24 years after the riot. If the NF marched through Brixton at that time in 1977 it might have been true there.

    Pity I missed this one; I joined the National Front about a month later. Interesting footage though, with poor old Mrs Esther Sizer ending up on her backside on the pavement. The media widely circulated the image of Esther saying that she was "an old lady caught in the mayhem" when she was actually a paid up member of the National Front. A brave lady, long since gone.
