thanks, you are a life saver. my ashtray lid wouldn't close before and i followed your instruction to remove and reinstall; and voila. turns out the spring was probably not positioned correctly before.

Excellent info. Couldn't have done it without this video.
One recommendation: more light is always better. By really illuminating the next video, and possibly using a pointer (other than a finger), the info would have been clearer.
    Thanks again, and great job!
By the way, I used the "wrap the thread around multiple times" trick, and it worked well for me too, freeing up my left-hand finger to more easily manipulate the cover back into place.

I left the spring off so it doesn't lift the ashtray which I replaced with a storage tray. To smart to smoke.

great tutorial ! beware the black lever to the left which acts as a guide and locks the door.
you may be stuck at the bottom: if it is so 'does not work. you have to place it towards you and then enter the door.

This helped me out thanks! Also i need help with the coin holder, when i spin it to come out or push in, it doesnt stay in position, it has movement but it should be in place .. still got the spring so that isnt the problem

The spring doesn't need to go that far back. The string is not needed. Just use the pin on the door. After 30 mins of frustration with this - www.e46fanatics.com/threads/diy-front-ashtray-storage-lid-wont-stay-closed.869034/#post-16398300

I have a similar problem,,the spring isn't my issue, it's that it won't stay closed, just springs back to being open all ofnthe time. Any ideas?

Excellent video! Most helpful as I have used it twice in the last 6 years or so, thank you! Not to steal your thunder but I modified your version a tad to make it a little easier. As you can see from my pics i was able to tightly wrap the tread around the hinge a few times which kept the tension on the spring and kept my left hand free. I was able to get the door installed in less than 15 seconds and then just cut the tread out very gingerly with surgical scissors. Thanks, I couldn't have done it without your video and I just hope my modification makes it that much easier for the next person. Here are my pics (click read more for links)
