- Finding a new Rock Chip on your vehicles paintwork can be SERIOUS eyesore. And while you may stare at it for hours, it won't go away on it's own. So today, I show you how to repair those unsightly paint chips to make it look like it (almost) never happened. Let's get started!
Stone chips, rock chips, paint chips, etc is a part of everyday driving but can easily ruin someone's day. The gut reaction is to go to your local auto parts store and try a paint touch up pen right? The reality is, those little pens rarely work if not make the chips MORE noticeable. The idea behind Professional paint chip repair is to make it unseen or substantially less noticeable with a permanent fix. Well, and also to prevent future rust issues from happening too! I started using the Dr. Colorchip system because I wanted an EXACT color match on my car with the ease of use with the system. 5 years ago, I sucked at it. Seriously. But fast forward to today, and I do these repairs professionally on the side.
Paint chips on car paint comes in various forms and sizes. The smaller the chip, the easier the repair is. Because we don't need a primer, or clear coat with this system, it's just a matter of preparing the surface to have this filled chip last a lifetime. While yes, you can go through the process of using real car paint, adding clear coat, sanding, polishing etc, I've personally had more of THOSE repairs fail in comparison to the Dr. Colorchip system. The longest running filled chip I have is going on 7 years. Following these steps, you may save yourself from spending $$$ on a chip that can be fixed for $50.
Hopefully this info and product system is helpful on fixing up your car, and don't let the paint chips get the best of you. This is the way.

I just bought a one year old truck with 21,000 miles. Normally I'm super detail oriented and extremely particular about things like this but I let my guard down because it was so new.
Apparently the previous owner got stuck or something because there are hundreds of rock scuffs/chips going up the entire height of the driver side door. It's white and not many of them are down to the metal which is why I didn't notice but my heart sank when I saw them a week later.
This video is a life saver. I asked a local body shop what I could do and the guy basically told me I was screwed and nothing could be done short of redoing the whole door.
I'm glad my BS meter went off and I found this
Anthony, I know this is a two year old post, but I just checked it out. I just purchased a Mopar factory touchup paint pen/brush/clearcoat combo pen. I have never gotten good smooth results and just took a minute to make something that actually works really well. I had some extra vinyl shade slats but any vinyl/plastic that you have and cut into a narrow stick (think pop sickle stick but cut the end to the width you need. Then at the very end kind of bend or curl it up slightly, the rounded end keeps you from digging into the paint I then had some 3m two sided emblem tape but any two sided tape should work, and applied it to the end. Cut the tape and 2000 and finished with 3000 grit paper slits the width of the defect. It made the perfect tool to evenly and flatly smooth the uneven touchup paint I applied to make it match the factory paint. The little strips of sand paper peal right off the tape to change with fresh paper. I made two pretty good size rock chips look great. The emblem tape has a touch of foam which held the tape just a touch off the stick and that was perfect. I know everyone won't have all this stuff laying around, but main point is don't just attack the chip, with a little thinking and looking around the house you can make something what will give you great results. I took a pic of what I was talking about, but I guess you can't post them on the comments, or I am to stupid to figure it out. Thanks for the video.
So if you want a micro sander just use a paper hole punch on the sandpaper and superglue the punch out on to the pencil 😊
This video gave me the confidence to finally buy a dr color chip kit and try to fill in the mini rock chips on my daily driver. Thank you for this!
Do it!!!!
I am watching this to do the same. My tc is starting to look rough.. so need to try to fix little chips and things

Fr I have ocd characteristics and I’m def doing this in the future
Dr. Chip is the best product in the market right now highly recommended
"Grab a friend and play find the chip" LOL, Love your content Anthony !
Haha thanks man!
Krud kutter rust remover gel works great to help prepare and treat the exposed metal. Mask the area well and touch each spot with the end of a skewer dipped in the gel. It will dull clearcoat so be carfeful. Spots treated this way are more likely to remain rust free for longer. It also works on the staining caused by rust. Use the gel but dont leave it on long. Vasaline seemed to work well to protect the area around the chip to avoid any damage to the clearcoat around it.
Love your demonstration of this touch up paint kit.
Lol I had to rewind a lil bit at the beginning you said”shit” so nonchalant 😂😂
Did you not have to lightly sand the previous paint coat before applying a second coat? And do you think you could build up the paint more than you did to prevent the chip from showing a divot once finished?
I think some filler to level it out first.
Thank you so much. This really helps. I have a white 4 runner. I’m complete ocd and I need to fix it. It’s killing me.
I will be buying DR. Colorchip now. Nice presentation.
OMG this was so helpful. Thank you & have a safe and happy holiday.
Nice video. I have used Dr Color Chip before and it is a very good product
You’re my favorite channel! I had bought a white 96 ex a week after you posted yours!
Thanks man! Congrats on the new whip!
Really good job I going to sort out the chip on my bonnet of my mokka and your advice brilliant 👍🇬🇧
Going to try this on my ‘05 Toyota Celica with a ton of tiny chips!
Do it! It’ll make a huge difference
Great tutorial! I’m surprised you didn’t need to wait longer between coats.
No clear coat after?
Nice little tutorial! I learned something new today!
Glad I could help
Waited for your new video upload. Now I am satisfied 😂
I haven't ever done this before thats why im watching the videos as im planning on repairing some chips on my car. But would it work better if the paint was built up slightly over the chip then sanded(with high grit wet and dry sandpaper) back down level with the paintwork then polished with something like T-Cut?
Does the cheese cloth scratch the paint around the chip when your wiping off extra paint build up?
Been waiting on this one
Hopefully it’s helpful! Thanks for watching dude
wow very nice job and tutorial. do you have any experience patching a black car with their black paint? wonder how it matches
Didn't have the greatest results from my first go. Previous owner backed up into something with 2 prongs so a good chunk of metal is missing from the 2 chips. Gonna give it another go tomorrow, having a hard time getting the paint to fill in evenly
The paint takes way longer than 5 mins to cure, and the solvent just removes everything. I think those promotions are all scams
Just got a b20 swapped civic coupe and have been trying to figure out how to patch it up a bit, this is helpful
Give this a shot!
just wondering after the rock chips are filled in would you recommend getting a ppf on it? also what’s a good sealant to put on ?
Wow you saved me because any lil ding I have on my 8th gen I get so mad so this is an alternative thank you.
Have been searching for the right EK either coupe or hatch and am coming up short. You have a great example of a car! I’m really wanting a white EX coupe. Perfect car!
I think this is a great car! White is nice too
I used a tiny brush and paint. Once dried, I sanded it down lightly with 320 grit, then 400 grit. Perfect and smooth. I can't tell it was there. You just have to be patient
The white color is pronounced taff-it-ah 😊. Great video. I’ll be ordering a kit.
Haha it probably is! Have fun with it p
wow i love the view, i hope someday i can visit greetings from Indonesia
I don't know if I'd consider that anywhere close to "pro results". Wouldn't wet sanding and polishing work a whole lot better than whatever that solution you put on there was?
Not when it's down past the clear and into the metal.
KEEP THE CONTENT UP MY GUY😎😤
I’m trying!
What is the other solution used at 10:25? to remove excessive paint ?
SealAct
@@knight3756 already found it! Thank you!!!
That was a very good job and it looks great thanks so much
Enjoyed this Anthony. The big chip looks like it could of benefited from PDR first before filling the chip. This way the light wouldnt distort thus drawing the eye to it. I'd have also been tempted to rather than using the leveling solution to have sanded down the chips. This would of given you a more seamless repair. However overall its great and a good job for sure. Thumbs up.
PDR would have drastically reduced the look of that chip! Unfortunately, it wasn’t part of the budget for this car hahs
@@ALLDAYANTHONY Just caught up with the back story. It had everything, drama, action, people rolling round in poop and driving needlessly to places. All the best with the project!
Can you do pdr on a chipped dent? I thought it would just pull the paint off since it's already been compromised.
@@FroztiProductions it can be done depending on car. There is risk as with anything. If the PDR technician can get behind the Dent which I believe on that model you can then you can message it out then flatten it.
@@GarageTherapyOfficial Does the chip repair paint bond well enough to do it afterwards if you properly soften it with heat?
Did you use Bondo or did you just do like a detailed sand and just start feeling it with the micro paint/ brush
good SHORT term fix
I wonder if you could overfill it, sand it, leaving small scratches, but keeping it more or less level, then going over it with a rotary polisher waxing it. What do you think?
I love these videos simple and yet very effective ways to make your car better for cheap
Man those are huge chips. Where did you get them? :)
Is this a better system than buying the oem Honda touch up paint?
Thank you I just purchases a Mini 2014 seeing its almost 20 yesrs old thecpaint have only a few imperfects tiny nicks but very visible problem the paint color is a dark Chocolate any additional suggestions?
So I did the build up, then waited 10 minutes to use step 2 and I cleared all the paint right out of the chip. How long should the wait be prior to using the correct solution to level out paint?
I need some help! I bought this kit, wiped it with alcohol and did everything you did, but when i applied the sealant and buffed it in a circular motion, it took all the paint off. Even after waiting close to 30 mins when it happened the first time and trying it again. 😢 I just got a jeep patriot and it had some dings down to the metal. Really wanting to fix this to prevent rust.
Any issues later with any of the spots rusting through again? I found a very small rust spot from I guess a chip on a 2022 that has some surface rust. I am about to basically do the same process.
Love these kind of videos!! 👏
Me too! Thanks for coming to watch!
great video. Where did you use the cheese cloth?
Yes sir my civic looks perfect but has a lot of dings same color and everything will be doing this soon 🤙🏻🤙🏻🔥
This may help clean it up a bit
Hey thanks for this. I’ve got a question for you: So I’ve got an or so long, narrow chip/scrape on the edge of my hood from badly installed windshield wipers. Is this kit a good option for patching that up?
I think this would be your best bet. I have repaired that same damage with this kit. Worked perfect
I'm gonna definitely try this on my White Knuckle Charger. Great work!
Thanks Anthony for this great tutorial. Is it safe to apply a sealant/coating soon after?
Yep. I can typically seat it or coat it within a day
Do you know if they could paint match color off of a photo? I have an airplane that is Ferrari red. Thank you.
Great video Anthony.
Thanks for the tutorial going to try this on my Fit!
Do it to it!
Just what I was looking for and video is well done
Omg that way to shake the paint shows how this spend his time off 😳 🤪
How well does that stuff work on a metallic pear?
I have some long scratches on my roof. Would this product work for that?
Great video, what kind of sand paper should I use? Do you have a name of one?
Any brand will do. He used 1,500 grit.
Yea, I’m not seeing the link to the rust remover product. Could you tell me what the name of the product you used please and thank you!
Thanks you for sharing video 👍👍👍
For less than half the price of color chip, you can get some touch up paint and wet sand paper and make the chip actually be undetectable.
I used to do this method professionally, it was always hit or miss and many times the repair failed. Trust me when I say this is easier and a lifetime repair. Longest running chip repair I’ve done is almost 9 years old
Great! Thank you.🙂👍
Thank you for posting! Have a 17 Nissan rogue sport that has a few chips that need to cover. Is there a solution to chips on base of wind shield wipers?
Pretty good job
This was awesome!
My kit doesn’t came with a seal wax do you have any recommendations I can buy similar to that? Thanks!
Can you polish and wax after on that and how long do you wait for drying
They offer multiple kits. Is the basic one sufficient to do this the way you demonstrated in this video?
Awesome video
I want to see the final result of this proyect!!
So do I lol
Can that solution be used on chips you have already filled with a paint pen? I filled a few chips i filled with a paint pen but its very uneven/rough. Trying to find a way to smooth and blend them. I have some pretty deep ones from winter i discovered today after a wash, clay bar and wax. 😢
I just ordered my kit. Thanks for the vid.
Have you tried the kit yet?
@@StylejdDiamondLife yeah worked ok, it's def better than what it was prior. I think it's just me.
@@38tech I'm in the process of doing it as we speak. Have probably done about 5 coats. Looks better for sure. Might do a few more coats and call it a day. How many coats did you do?
@@StylejdDiamondLife three I think.
Could you store the brushes in the paint and or clear coat between the 10 minutes dry time?
My favorite game is Find The Chip
Hello, can i use acetone to wipe off excess paint? Thanks :)
My repair paints are color matched. But, it's a two-tone metallic red in two bottles. Not sure if I apply the base metallic red and then the clear red. Or, mix the two then apply???
The wipers are gone. Painting them? I've been needing to paint mine.
Also noticed the new si lip and the side moulding are really black! Paint or ceramic coat?
Yep paining the wipers! And I have a separate video on the trim coming
Do you have to apply clear coat after touching up the chip with paint?
Hi. Can you please post a new link to mini brushes ? Seems that Amazon link doesn’t work now
Do I need to sand a key scratch or not before putting the paint
Any advice for metallic painting? I did it flawlessly with a 41V, but I cannot get it to look even decent with a 1J7, I have tried perhaps 8 times and the results seem very similar. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
How long does it last in the chips ? Does it come out with bad weather ?
Without watching the video all the way, you sound just like the guy from TRC
Have you ever tried to use some filler to fill the dents first? Can you buy a clear coat in this system?
Can you do that same process for the plastic/fiberglass bumper? Thx
Perfect demonstration.
Hey! I’ve got a ceramic coating treatment on mine. Will it be the same process?
Yes as long as the coating isn’t over the chip to be filled
Great job how much would you usually charge to fix a small chip paint like this one?
Good video mate. Thx
Where do you buy it?
If I do this how long do u recommend before applying a ceramic coating?
Can clear coat be apllied afterwards?
Yep!
Wait so question, if the chip does not have rust in it, we skip the sanding part and go straight to cleaning the chip with alcohol?
Yep!
hi good vid where do i get that seal lax solution please
Awesome job my dude.
Thanks fam
would anyone recommend on a 2021 white gmc truck. i scratched it no dents pulling out frm grocery store and in considerate people didn’t put the shopping carts and scratched my truck
Can you use this if you have ceramic coat on the paint
