    Just ordered 2 full upgrade kits (carbon drag washers, Japanese bearings and upgraded main gear / worm gear with bearing) from "DadsOleTackle" for my ABU 5500 and ABU 6500. I figured the washers may give me problems but then I found your video. THANK YOU greatly for making this tutorial. You fool proofed not only installation but assembly in case I forgot the proper order of parts. You ROCK man!

    Thanks for the video!
    I know on the old type drag washers Garcia used---20 years ago--that if they got oil soaked, and then got wet when fishing the drag would skip.

      Yes sir. Oil is a no no on the older style for sure. They would lock up then grab. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it

    I've gone the next step and along with the carbon fibre washers have also installed smooth drag ground flat metal washers.The drag is flawless.Still sensible with it and only set it appropriately,but the start up and consistent smooth release of line is worth the extra effort Cheers.

    Good info, thats all I got,6500C, older ones, hardly ever have a problem.Not sure about the new ones,heard bad things about some of them. I'l be waiting to see how much drag you get out of one and how much damage it causes. Used to oil the washers but here lately I hadn't , just clean and put back in.

      I only use oil if I go with new textured ones. You can’t beat a the older ones for sure Thanks for watching and commenting

    Great video timely also been planning on doing this to my reels. Looking forward to the next video. By the way if you don’t mind my asking where did you get the carbon fiber washers?

      Glenn I have a local shop that sells them. It’s about 8 bucks to do a reel. You can order them in bulk off Amazon. Pretty cheap.

    I don’t own abus yet but enjoyed the video just wondering if that will work on my reels.

      Glenn about all the drags on bait casters are close in design most times all thats needed is just to remove the drag washers and clean them. i always scuff mine with a scotch brite pad before reinstalling, that usually makes them good as new

    I changed mine all out to carbon fiber and then I even went further and went with sealed bearings and level wind with bearings with a ceramic pug on the level wind and I'll tell you what it'll cast of mile it's right up there with the Beast from Abu Garcia but half the price

    • @bowl830
      @bowl830  5 років тому

      Wait till you take all the level wind off an put on a CT bar. You will cast farther.

    In the video you say the reel is designed for 14 lb of drag. I you upgrade your drag washers and tighten the drag more, will it cause issues with other parts of the reel? Really curious since I have 3 20+ year old garcias and I would love to upgrade the drag on one to use for large swimbaits If possible. Also don't see the video you made of the increased drag test on your channel anywhere. Would love to see that.

    • @bowl830
      @bowl830  4 роки тому

      Yes it will take its toll on the other parts. I upgrade just to get better life and smoother pull. If you tightened it down to 20+ it will destroy the reel lol. I had a computer crash and lost about a dozen videos. I ripped the gears out of it at 30 lb of drag. It’s safe to do just use a quality drag grease and the drag feels great. Thanks for

    Looking to upgrade, LOL, brand new 6500 rockets. Is this conversion "smooth"? 2 specifics, smooth out but more important, initial start of slip? If I set my 6500 Rockets where I want it, it takes 1/3 more pull just to get it going. That would surely be a point of break off with a big fish

    • @bowl830
      @bowl830  4 роки тому

      Dry the initial release is sudden and very grabby in my opinion. I always use a little drag grease. Very little. It makes it more of a slow steady pull while releasing. Thanks for watching and commenting

    • @martyprice5619
      @martyprice5619 4 роки тому

      @@bowl830 My new reels, the Rockets upgraded from C3's don't have enough drag, and... take to much initial pull. So I will need this mod. If I lube what I have then it will become to weak. I saw in the comments you have a source in Kings Mountain? I'm just outside of Charlotte so I would love to have that contact
