The way he blends string skipping, alternate pickin and sweeps and makes it look effortless is really inspirational.
Arpeggios are so pleasing to the ear. Diminished are my favorites.
I love Oz Noy. No messing around, he is so natural and goes straight to the point.

He's super condescending, how can an attitude like that appeal to the people here? Why would an artist purposely ignore the intricacies of technical skill? He himself said that mechanics are a tool, so why is he so rude about people wanting to explore them more deeply?

Andy Pollow He wasn't condescending. But he was trying to make the point that technique isn't an end unto itself, it's a means to make music. It's possible to be too concerned about the mechanics. These days too many people treat technique like an Olympic sport, much to the detriment of musicality.
Your pursuit of understanding combined with your comfort with conversing with such high talent is outstanding. These guys seem to respect you for your search and your talent. Great job!

Excellent! Troy, have you thought about analyzing Takayoshi Ohmura's picking? I think that he is amazing at circular picking.
I just became an Oz Noy fan!! That "technique should just be a tool to get your music across" statement helps my playing.
One of the things that really improved my playing was memorizong many areas to play each conventional chord shape. Like a D shape played at the 8th fret instead of the 3rd is a different G voicing, or an E shape at the 5th fret is also a G (lazy barre chord) or an A shape, at the 12th fret is also another G, or a C-shape with the root at the 10th fret is another G chord, very similar to the previous D shape at the 8th fret, but with a lower root, and no B note from the high e string.
Once you can do that, and then remember your basic chord progression for the particular key you are plating in you're all set. Learining to string them all together, deciding when to end the current shape, and where/how to start the next one and getting your muscle memory trained to just grab those little metal bars strictly by how they feel is like making magic happen the first time you do it, and then when the improvisational skill catches up, and you know you can confidently jam with 90% of radio music its like magic....again.
Watching him lament the difficulty connecting them all hit me...hard. As a fellow non-sweeper (not a good one, anyway) I felt it.....right here (points to heart......with misty eyes). I can down sweep okay, but the upsweeps comtinue to elude me.

Hey troy, have you thought about analyzing jimmy rosenberg's picking? He seems to use the standard gypsy picking technique but he's incredibly fast (eg. Solo on 'Made for Wesley')

Interesting, his bridge height keeps increasing (low E is highest string) and does not follow the common bow (radius) pattern. :)

I think this is the closest I've seen to my own approach. There's no real formula, it's just feel and following the path of least resistance. When starting fast runs I'm still not sure if I always start on an downstroke or upstroke. I have worked out that it's always downstroke on string change descending and reverse ascending.

Nobody cares aside those who think they aren't musicians if they can't play paul gilbert picking licks. What really matters is can u write a cool melody using the mechanics u develop over time even if you never leave your bedroom. Just show me the melody.
Bang Absolutely agree. I recently gave up on my intense technique practice after fifteen years of trying to be as clean and fast as possible. Now I focus on rhythm, melody and expression. I wish I had done it sooner... that’s what music is about.

sat around thinking about what their hands were doing. IF players want to focus on the mechanics of playing then that is up to them, i am more into what you said above.

It's neat to see troy go and film all these guys right hands but it shouldnt be somebody's only purpose unless they don't have anything to say. Some people can't write even with expensive school training behind them so they focus solely on how fast and clean they can get something
I think the most important thing is musical expression. If what you play is the same as what you had in your head, be it shred licks with flawless technique or a slow melodic line, then you're doing something right.

That's an interesting point of view but he actually can teach what he does very clearly - the rub is that the execution of the techniques and concepts he uses comes much more easily to him than to almost anyone else - also his time is excellent and that's kind of built in to his DNA

So many players today have amazing technique. However, their music is not something I listen to and enjoy. Not bashing this guy or anyone for that matter. He even states that technique should only support making good music. Just my observation that most of these great guitar players do not have hits and recordings you can listen to for a lifetime.
He's obviously spent countless hours focusing on theory and technique. Why does he feel the need to lie about it?
Elite players like Oz very often don't think about the actual hand motions consciously. They feel their way through it. This is typical among the many players we have interviewed - they're not lying. Music theory on the other hand, conscious. Oz thinks a lot about that and we discussed this extensively in our talk.
if you wanna learn arpeggios study the great classical and jazz pianists. why do guitarists only study guitarists?
learn to read music and study the masters. work out the problems and thats how you build your technique.
