My wife and I are you. We are facing retirement And quite honestly it’s scary. I just went through a private equity buyout and I could easily retire now. But I’m planning to continue a few more years. Only because that’s what I’ve done all my life. Work. But I love work. So I don’t know no. We get how scary it is. And we are very similar, we were acquired by a PE as well, and decided to stay. They were the worst 3 years of our lives. Of course a PE's mandate is to improve EBITDA, cut expenses, and usually flip in 3-5 years. We watched them slowly strangle our baby, really agonizing. I'm hoping your experience is much different than ours! We love work, too, we just want to do different work than what we did for this next phase of our life. It was entirely mutual 😂The crazy thing is that we never actually saw them, they never left their apartment. We even left them a note but it made no difference.
It is not the place to be! I think they had better keep looking but why Portugal? I have been there, nice people and cost of living is very reasonable. However it cannot beat the USA! How are things going with picking up the language, you must become facile in Portuguese.
We aren't forsaking the US, our family and friends are here and we're keeping our home. We still love the US, we just want to try living somewhere else for a year or two. We're not selling everything and forever moving away, we just want a different experience while we're still young enough to enjoy it. As for Portuguese, it is crazy hard. We've been studying for about 3 months and I can honestly say we've made very little progress. We'll keep at it, though!
