Most all of your pictures of El Carmen where not in El Carmen. Pucol is not in the hills. Cabanyal is not the best in the winter. But most any neighborhood in the city is fine, but expats should stay around the center as that is where the nicest areas are. Valencia is small. From el Carmen to the beach is 4 miles. The City of Sciences area is cold and impersonal. People get int he elevator down to their cars so you are less likely to find community. The point of moving here is to enjoy the culture. The most important thing is to come and walk and explore.

Hi, I'm portuguese from Algarve and I live in France since ever. I intent to go back to Portugal for my retirement and buy a house in Spain (I don't know where yet, but I love Andalucia). I love Spain and I understand that it is not easy to choose between Spain and Portugal. Well for me, it is not easy either to choose between my two Countries (Portugal/France) and Spain. I already have a house in Algarve and will probably sell my house in France when retired, as things are getting worst in France, so many violence and I can't stand the grumpy French anymore.

Definitely not easy to choose between Spain and Portugal. We love both! But for us, it just seems much easier and more affordable to live in Spain vs. Portugal. The Algarve is so beautiful, I'm curious if you already have a home there why you'd consider Spain?

The quality of life for families and kids seems to be really wonderful. In Spain, it seems that there is so much value placed on family and work/life balance, and the expats that we met there with children were really happy they made the decision to move to Valencia.

Great video. Good luck with your search. Valencia is my home city. Do go during autumn to early spring. It’s beautiful and quieter. I have lived near Barcelona and Malaga over the years but, my heart is in Valencia. I agree with one comment. For anyone looking to recolate to Valencia I have to give a shout out to Antonanetta’s youtube channel. Great help. She also helps with housing and legalalities. In my experience I can only say that I have only found the Spanish people everywhere I have been very kind, patient and speaking as a senior, very respectful from all age groups which gives a warming feeling. Learn some sentences and, with a sense of humour you will get through. I have had to apologise to many workers for so many rude expats I’m afraid, and was sad when I was told that they were use to it. Translation apps are great. You only get back what you put out and I always remember that I am in a country that is not my own so respect their culture. I have never felt as safe as I do here. Disfruta España and smile ❤

I love this so much! I agree that it is our responsibility to make an effort to speak Spanish, we have really been studying. One of us is doing better than the other, but I won't name names ;). I also found that the many Spanish people that we met while we were there were overwhelmingly lovely and so patient with our terrible Spanish! I'm so glad you're happy and feeling so safe there.

Many thanks! We moved to Patraix about four years ago now. (Sorry to hear about your mother). Some comments from someone who has lived here, full time, for four years: - El Carmen: Yes, very "artsy", but many people move out due to the amount of tourists. Smaller, costlier apartments, too. Great to visit! - Plumbing: Sewage smells are really all around the city, especially when it's hot. - "Eixample": See El Carmen. - "Festivals"??? Fallas is crazy everywhere! If you are concerned about the city burning down, and fireworks all day, avoid being in the city for the 1st half of March. Small children and dogs should be taken outside the city at this time. You can limit the noise if you avoid living next to a "Casal" - these are the groups that have year-round events for Fallas. (For example, last weekend, our local Casal had a DJ playing music until 5am just across the street from us). - Ruzafa: Very trendy, gentrified neighborhood. A great park (Parque Centrale). Note that it's been on the "up and up" for 10 years now, and is one of the more expensive and English-speaking neighborhoods. - "Taste of America": Very expensive, but some hard to find American food items (e.g., hot sauces). - La Xerea: We have maybe walked thru, but not enough to say. We'll check it out! - Cabañal: Very trendy, and yes - right by the water. The Malvarossa and Patacona beaches are cheaper and less touristy. There are buses and metros that are very good to get to the beach and elsewhere. (At night, many pickpockets and scammers - very little physical violence, and no guns). - Puçol: Beautiful little town with some guarded communities, too. Would require a car there, but could take the commuter train from Puçol to visit Valencia. (There are many towns like this around Valencia and Spain). - Spanish: The focus here is for people to learn Valencian (the local language) more than English. Even younger people don't speak English much. - Benimaclet: a College area with easy metro access to the city center (two stops from Colon), the Malvarossa beach (3-4 stops). For younger people who want to go to school and share apartments, it would be ideal. The 10 bus starts in Benimaclet, cuts thru Mestalla, the city center, then Plaza España, and to the train stations. - Mestalla: That's where the local La Liga football team plays. Gets really, really busy during games. - Bikes: The "Venibici" (bike share) is about 33 euros per YEAR! - City of Arts and Sciences: modern, pretty area. The 99 bus can take you right to the beach from there, too. Very touristy and more expensive. During Fallas, they have fireworks every midnight. - Hills: one advantage of a flat city like Valencia is it's very walkable at most ages. - Idealista: many of the listings are fake, but it is meant to give people an idea about properties and costs per area. ¡Disfruta!

Just one interesting thing. In the spanish Vicekingdom system, the territories in america paid only what was called "the royal fifth" or "el quinto real", meaning only 20% of the wealth they produced, and they were administrated in a quite independent way. Thats why if you go to latin-america; Mexico, Peru.. etc... you can find also big structures like cathedrals, universities, strongholds, hospitals and so on. Most important part of the wealth was invested to develop the territories themselves because that was the way the romans did it before, and in the middle age the same system still prevailed. The wealth produced in America was so huge that only the 20% sent to Spain was enough to build wonders. Consider that Cadiz and Seville became two of the most important docks in europe, with constant trade from/to America in the golden century. We are not only speaking about America, but Asia as well, with the raising commerce of silver and goods in Japan and China. The wealth and industry those days was really huge for the middle age terms, creating a global trade system and global silver currency called "Real de a ocho" used from asia to Europe. This system started with the catholic kings, and was kept/enhanced by the next dinasty from the house of the Austrias, only broken when the dinasty of Bourbons from France took the crown of Spain, who decided to increase the percent of wealth taken from the territories abroad and reduce their independence in the french way but it just didn't work.

Thanks for an informative and thought provoking comparison here. As a long term(18 very happy and content years)British born resident, of the Costa Blanca. I agree wholeheartedly with what you say about lovely Valencia. The city is not only Spain's third largest after Madrid and Barcelona, with a population of +/- 800,000, but also capital of the autonomous "Communidad Valenciana" of which Costa Blanca is a part of. I have to admit though that 12 years of just barely surviving in London(U.K.) convinced me that, I am much more of "A Small Town Lad" than "a Big City Boy". However getting back to Valencia, you might be interested to know that the city also has an excellent Health Care system, in keeping with the rest of Spain(8th Best in the World according to "W.H.O"). In addition other points worth mentioning are the incredible "Parc de Sience y Cultura" built along the disused "Turia" River bed and home to a collection of amazing structures designed by the visionary Valencian architect "Santiago Calatrava", where the "crown" jewel is undoubtedly "The Reina Sofia Centro de Cultura"(Queen Sofia Cultural Centre) a.k.a. Valenica Opera House. It is an iconic a structure in it's own right, as the more well known "Sydney Opera House" In Australia. You also failed to mention Valencia's gigantic covered market, which I believe is the largest in Spain, where one can buy top quality, but still cost effective, fresh produce... Lastly if you enjoy "Fiesta's" then you really need to experience Valencia's "Fallas"(pronounced "Fay-yas") which take place annually, marking the end of the "Lent" religious period. For a two week period they feature amazing and beautiful, elaborate, fantasy or topical figurative structures made of wood and papier-mache mostly, to rival anything found in Disney, erected in squares and parks throughout the city. Widely accepted as the best in all of Spain, on the final night and witnessed by crowds of several hundred thousand, these beautiful structures are set ablaze accompanied by music, dancing and much merriment..!!

I have to say we’re really struggling with getting clarity. We’re going to meet with someone there in person, hoping that is helpful.

That is why Valencia has so many orange trees, it was to disguise the sewage smell.

The problem with Valencia, in my opinion and I, who am Valencian and have lived all my life in my city, is that it is gradually ceasing to be the hidden jewel of the Mediterranean. Valencia has never had the popularity, nor the publicity, nor certainly not by the means the economic investment that the state has always allocated to Madrid and Barcelona, it has been the poor bug among the three big cities, that was bad when it came to financing but it was good in other aspects that I will now comment. Everything we have in Valencia (city of sciences, metro, tram, turia park etc etc etc) has been paid for by the Valencians, almost everything they have in Madrid and Barcelona in terms of state infrastructures and part of their public transport (until the entry into operation of the autonomous communities in the second part of the seventies).... We Valencians have also paid for it along with the rest of the stateHowever, the tranquility that we have always lived in Valencia with reasonable tourism and with minimal rates of insecurity compared to Madrid and Barcelona is slowly changing because with social networks (Videos like this are an example), the publicity given by Forbes to Valencia last year declaring it the best city in the world to live in, foreigners realize what a wonderful city Valencia is, which has everything to live well and since in Madrid and Barcelona the rents and other costs are very high, they come to Valencia, so there are no more apartments to rent here... Prices are rising, which are getting closer and closer to those of the other two capitals, and tourism (as in Malaga, for example) is beginning to become unbearable. Frankly, I would have preferred it to remain the hidden jewel of the Mediterranean, absolutely discriminated against by the media, and to continue enjoying it as a native of it with the tranquility of always.

I am also Spanish and I experienced the decline and destruction of Barcelona in the face of tourism and foreigners who came to live. You have explained it very well, but as you can see from the comments and their response, very polite, they are not interested, they want the local population out so they can get involved. In Seville, Malaga etc., the same thing is happening.

I haven't been in Valencia in March, so can't answer that but from my research it appears that it's on average mid-60 degree F. Which sounds glorious to me!
