Kiku's genius and real skill is in reading people and their hearts and then providing a service they themselves would never ask for but desire. Such a great character.

The way the actress is playing lady Ochiba is so good her eyes tells so much and its scary
Not only the eyes, the way she speaks is so sneaky and creapy.
I like how each character have they hown melody while speaking and Ochiba one is scary as hell.
I'm 60 and I was 12 when this book came out. Fell in love with Japan, lived and worked there for a bit saw the original miniseries, loved this one, and this is a superlative episode. I was waiting for you guys to release this and react to it. I don't watch reaction videos that often, but I like your insight and your reactions both

There’s a great Reddit post about this that I have to share. So when Mariko and Anjin are saying the Lord’s Prayer and he’s speaking “English/Portuguese” and she’s speaking Latin.
The split between the Catholic and Protestant churches were SUPER complicated but one of the main and most basic differences is that the Catholics required mass to be delivered in Latin. Most people were uneducated and didn’t speak Latin so this was a way to control the word of God exclusively for the clergy.
Protestants translated mass in to whatever was the common language, making it more accessible to the masses. This doesn’t make one side good and one side bad, but it’s a great detail how they have a shared moment that also happens to be one of the reasons for their division.
Both sides are bad.
I think the lady in the brotherl chose her words carefully, knowing full well that Mariko would attach her self to the words. She was very sincere when she talked about "more than physical pleasure", Mariko didnt realize that she was also a "client": that was the most open and vulnerable she was in the entire show, and I believe she needed it. Did Toranaga know this would happen too, and thats why he asked Mariko to go? She had an excuse (to translate) so that she can have a moment of deserved vulnerability.
In think Toronaga asked Mariko to join Blackthorn so the courtesan (Kiku) would drive a wedge between them
In the book and 80s version Toronaga does this as a reward or way to keep Blackthorn happy and Mariko really wants to go in the willow world she says to Blackthorn when a woman cares for someone who is not her husband she may choose a substitute to be who she is not allowed to be it's quite touching and a way for Mariko to tell Blackthorn how she feels about him. I think in this one they messed this up as it's meant to be a touching moment whereas they do flash backs that sort ruin the moment and Mariko comes across as a bit of a cold fish instead. Can I just say, your reactions to this show are my favorite I’ve watched. As a half Japanese millennial that grew up in small town America (just a whole lot of dismissal and outright hostility towards the Japanese part of my heritage), it’s really fun and gratifying to watch you both dive into this fascinating bit of Japan’s history. You’re so observant and intuitive and engaged with it and it makes me happy!
Obviously these days, the average westerner’s relationship with Asian culture is wildly different and far more welcoming than it was 20 years ago, but the stuff you grow up with sticks with you. Just an example: a police officer in the town I grew up in, who was also the father of one of my classmates, was seen at the movie theater shouting “kill those japs” at a showing of Pearl Harbor lmao, wild stuff.
Obviously none of that stuff has anything to do with you girls, I just mean it’s very heartwarming seeing others engage so earnestly with this show, none more earnestly than you two! ❤

Catholics traditionally pray in Latin. It was one of Martin Luther's gripes about Catholicism, that the mandated Latin alienated people from the texts. So Mariko praying in Latin opposite John praying in English is an image of Catholicism opposite Protestantism.
Both sides think they can change the perfect plan of a vengeful god with words, how funny.
The dialogue in this show and the writing is top notch

1 koku is 180 liters of rice, said to be the average amount of rice to feed 1 person for 1 year.
1 koku = 1 ryo, a gold coin.
1 ryo = 60 monme, a silver coin
So 500 monme, the opening price of courtesan Kiku, would be equal to 8.3 ryo, or 8 years worth of food.
600 koku would be worth 72 nights with Kiku!

Can I assume you're Japanese, or know the language? What is 'Kosho"? The late Taiko's wife said Ishido was just his favorite Kosho. I googled it, and is it some sort of sauce? It's hilarious to think she's saying he's so common he's "just the Taiko's favorite ketchup"

Ladies, I’m SO enjoying yall watching this. I’m not sure if you’ve ever read Sun Tzu (You both SHOULD!!!!), but I guarantee ‘Toronaga’ was steeped in it. ‘The Art of War’ is a very short read and has incredibly potent life lessons not solely applicable to war. Every line is a gem but, if I had to sum it up, I’d do so like this: “When you’re weak, pretend you’re strong. When you’re strong, pretend you are weak.”
You would do very well to remember that both for this series and in life.

I think that if the heir isn’t the Taiko’s, he was conceived by someone selected by the Taiko and/or his wife. As you’ve seen from how 0.0% of secrets stay secret in this setting, I think Ochiba finding a way to get impregnated by someone else on her own to be unlikely and incredibly dangerous.
Grossly, it is also possible that it is the Taiko’s after WAY too much old man laydown grunting (aka he was shooting *mostly*, but not *all* blanks) 🤮
