The F-4 Phantom will forever be one of my favorite military jets of all time! It's what got me into military aviation and aviation in general. I'll never forget years ago discovering documentaries about the F-4 especially during the Vietnam war, I fell in love with it instantly.

2013, Two Iranian F-4s attempted to intercept a USAF drone out over the Persian Gulf. A year prior, a pair of Iranian Su-25s did the same thing. They intercepted and shot at an MQ-1 Predator before turning tail and heading home. After this, the US decided they needed to provide escorts. Most of the time this came in the form of F/A-18s from a nearby carrier. But sometimes the escort was an F-22. A year later and another drone is just outside Iranian airspace. Once again, Iran sends aircraft to intercept, this time a pair of Phantoms. As the two Iranian Phantoms moved to intercept the drone, one of the drone's two escorting F-22s flew up underneath one of the approaching Phantoms. The F-22 pilot flew right up behind and underneath the Phantoms, inspecting their armament. Obviously, the Raptor pilot was not intimidated by the F-4’s payload because he then pulled up alongside the left wing of one of the F-4s, hailed them, and told the Iranian pilots, “You really ought to go home.” The Raptor walked right up behind them, was able to get close enough to tell if the pilots shaved that morning, and the Phantom crews were non the wiser until it was too late. The Phantom is that 65 year old who makes a lot of noise, still smokes, but has finally accepted that his best years are behind him, so he tells *really* good war stories and is respected for it. He takes comfort that one USAF F-4 shot down more MiGs over a six month period than the Navy's F-14 fleet shot down over its entire career. But at the end of the day, he knows better than to step up to his grandson.

It's performance wasn't that much better than a Phantom's, especially if the Phantom had burned off fuel (lost weight). But the Raptor? That's a *whole* different beast. It has no parasitic drag from pylons or tanks. It can turn inside of the cleanest, lightest F-16. It can hit Mach 1 by the end of the runway on takeoff if it wanted. The Phantom would tell you there's a plane x-miles away. The Eagle would tell you that it's a MiG-29. The Raptor will tell you what the pilot had for breakfast. It is the most terrifying thing in the sky since the Cretaceous period.
True but the F-4 is spiteful and refuses to die it only recently got pulled from Japanese service. It won’t outlive the 52 probably but it will die hard. Yeah I’m more trying to be poetic then analytical on this one
Seeing the Thunderbird F-4 Phantoms reminded me of this little pamphlet my dad had that had been signed by the pilots of the F-4 Thunderbirds when they performed at an airshow that was part of the grand opening of an airport in his hometown.
What's funny is there was one time a pair of Iranian Phantoms were sent to intercept a US drone but didn't know the drone had a Raptor escort; the F-22 approached the Phantoms undetected, visually inspected their weapons loadout, then let the Phantoms know he was there by telling them over the radio they "should go home now".

That is a lot of tough talk from a plane that was a target drone 2007 to 2016. Search the QF-4. It's not called "The triumph of thrust over aerodynamics" for nothing.
Tbf, any plane we’re not actively flying is a target drone these days. Back in 2019 we shot down a bunch of drone F-16’s over the Gulf of Mexico for a massive training exercise. Wish I’d been able to see the footage, but I loaded the missiles, so I’m pretty proud of that.

Maybe we will see them later on in airshows, like older warbirds now or the Collins Foundation F-4. The stories I heard from the guys that had to fly the SR-71s to AMARG made me cry. The SR-71 was the craft my grandpa maintained. One guy said they were getting faster the older they got, and when they landed they had to run the engines till they burned through the fuel. Said it sounded like they were choking the life out of them.
It’s funny, the F-4 didn’t even mention it’s near complete reliance on missiles alone was what cost US pilots their lives as the doctrine before the Top Gun school of flight was the total discarding of the dogfighting tactics that had made the US Air Force such a menace to enemy air. It was only at the F-4C that they even had mounted guns, but without lead indicators for a long time and the guns were far from the sight (and often badly bore sighted due to the cockpit gun distance), hitting was highly difficult in the best of circumstances though still more cost effective, but also led to much more drag due to external carriers. To top that off, both radar and heat seekers at the time were very unreliable… it was disastrous to say the least. Moral of the story, the missile only tried to roast the F-4 to forget the utter failures of its childhood in Vietnam and yet still failed.

The Missile roasts the Spad S-XIII. It would be funny because the 94th FS (an F-22 squadron) calls itself the Spad as a heritage thing, so it'd be like the missile roasting itself.
The F-22's stealth relies on a coating that has to be reapplied after every mission as air friction peels it off. Also the F-22 carries 6 missiles internally with no external mounts available. So once it's out of missiles it's nearly defenseless as its gun only has just a few seconds worth of ammunition. Lastly, the latest modern multi-phase electronically scanned radar can see the F-22 just fine which the much older F-4 Phantom does not have. Funny thing is, you could take the original design of the F-4 and replace the engines with thrust vectoring exhaust nozzles, modernize the cockpit, replace the ancient radar with a much more modern radar system, replace the onboard avionics package with a modern system, upgrade the onboard computers for the weapons systems, add fully integrated support for helmet mounted display and targeting, modernize the missile and bomb loadouts, upgrade the wings with modern leading edge flaps (referred to as stabs), clean up and smooth out all the edges around the airframe and other surfaces to improve the aerodynamics and add a pair of canards near the front of the aircraft and call it the F-4M Phantom III. F-22: "I can still see you!" F-4M Phantom III: "I can see you too, bitch!" 😝
