“Please resist the urge to point out that this is the F-4E.” Ok, what about the urge to point out most the ships in the fleet are Iowa class battleships?
Had to jump back when I saw the 59 on the island. CV-59 USS Forrestal. Man, so awesome seeing you land on that. Served with the Marine detachment on her from 86-88. Really loved that time of my life.
Don't you mean USS FORRESTFIRE? ;) Man, Ida loved to serve on a carrier... even as a babysitter... er, Marine. Beats the steamy barracks I had in GA, NC and FL. Fmr Army Ranger here (87-93)... thank YOU for your sacrifice, brother!
I served on USS Independence CV-62, also a Forrestal Class CV, in Japan from 93-97. It was the only carrier I served on in my 28 years as my Rate/NECs kept me in the FFG/DDG world the rest of the time. Indy was by far the noisiest, hottest, dirtiest, smelliest tour of my career, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.
The U.S. rules of engagement in Vietnam required *visual* ID because IFF was unreliable and there had been some friendly fire incidents early on. That often put the Phantoms of parameters for Sparrow missile shots.
@@ReflectedSimulations that's really interesting to know, I'm going to start making a habit of turning it off, lets see I can get some sparrow kills now.
I find sparrows (especially earlier variants) rarely work when fighting on the deck. I almost prefer to lead with sparrows when I have a better chance of getting a head on shot from higher altitudes and loot goblin my sidewinders away until I get into closer quarters. Awesome video!

@@GrowlingSidewinder thanks for the response. In general though, I really enjoy scenario based missions. Start on the ground, go through a cold start, scramble and destroy 😃
Don't really think that carrier group needs any defending with all four Iowa class battleships that were ever built escorting it. lol! (This is a joke)
From what I could tell, there were at least 7, so throw in the Illinois and Kentucky as well as several fictional ones. Then again, by this point in history, the Iowa’s didn’t have any area air defense capability and they never had any ASW ability so…
@@lightspeedvictory : The North Vietnamese had a total of 4 IL-28 'Beagle' twin engine bombers (Soviet equivalent of the Canberra bomber). An Iowa's WW2 era AA guns would have been sufficient against them.
Really liked this one. Nice to see a big furball above the carrier group. Also cool to see where you were merged with 2 bandits and how your wingman affects the dog fight. Would be cool to see more merges where each guy has a wingman.
I love the E! I worked on that beautiful brick. I can honestly say I don’t recall any of our 100+ WW’s taking off without a centerline. It needed the 600 gallons to get in the air.
@@GrowlingSidewinder funny thing is Naval variant would have better radar which would make Sparrows much more useful also i have to wonder which missiles are being used here - the F-4 module has access to Sidewinders from B up to M variant which is humongous spread in capability and same can be sayd for Sparrows which range from 7E through 7E2 up to 7M - maybe it would be a good idea to name the loadout being used :)
FWIW, you helped the fleet even though you weren't the one to shoot down that last plane. You essentially kept him busy enough so he couldn't get a shot on the fleet, and distracted him enough to allow the ships to shoot him down. Still a great job in my book!!

By the way I've been enjoying the Thunderbirds this fourth of July and the F35 lightning 2. Aka Fat Amy. Usually we get the Blue Angels but this year we got the Birds back I haven't seen them in a couple years. One of the advantages of living within a mile of a National Guard base and Airport.
I guess I'll be Captain Obvious and point out that there wouldn't be that many Iowa class battleships in that battle group during the Vietnam era. Now give me three cheers for the F-4J Phantom!
the thing is when F-4J was flying MiGs kinda didnt have flares ... by the time Soviets started putting countermeasures on the MiGs F-4Js were mostly replaced by F-14s and/or upgraded to F-4S standard and Boeing was already prototyping the "SuperPhantom"
If you could learn the sparrow and make a tutorial about its potential usage in a dogfight you’d be helping a ton of people out. I’ve played around with it and have gotten to the point where (single player vs. various aircraft) I can use it pretty much exclusively as a dogfight missile. If you wanna mess around with it I’d be happy and excited to try it out in a PvP testbed.
I hope (in futility) that mods for all of the unique F-4 variants are made. They don't even have to be good for me to use them lol. The F-4B, F-4B(2) w/gun, the F-4G, F-4J, F-4H (2000) and the F-4 Terminator, come to mind. Kind of like how every freaking variant of Flanker is available. But, I know, the difference being that the Flanker is an FC aircraft, and probably way easier to work on, if modding the Phantom is possible at all. I do love this aircraft though. Even as I grow and my appetite for this kind of thing gets lower and lower, the Hornet, the Sabre, the Phantom, and the MiG-15, and MiG-19 keep pulling me back in anyway.
11:03 just a couple of seconds longer and you'd have been under him and would have pointed the nose up getting a better radar return and aiding the Sparrow in avoiding the water. "We'll see how this plays out..." and the proceeds to snag the 3 wire.😂
