This definitely looks cool. I've only played Blazing Blade and Sacred Stones for FE titles, but I enjoyed both of them immensely and this looks a lot like them. Thanks for letting us know about a quality Indie game flying under the radar.
It looks kinda like Fire Emblem and Shining force had offspring, glad you mentioned the pixel art at the end. Watching your review I was really impressed with how good the art is.
Just got around to buying this game on the switch eShop sale, and man am I loving it! You nailed the key aspects, story isn't necessarily addictive but the dialogue is well written enough that it doesn't feel like a child wrote it. Pixel art is phenomenal and I really can't wait to see what every class's animations and criticals look like
@@TheGamingShelf haha well soon enough then! I'm gonna be playing as soon as it unlocks tonight. Been a while since I've been this jazzed for a big new IP that wasn't an indie game. Definitely gonna add dark deity to my list though. I really wanted to get into fell seal but the art direction in it just didn't mesh with me.. dumb reason to not get into a game? Maybe but it's been a sticking point since I got it on sale a while ago. This game however just is right up my alley.
@@TheGamingShelf it almost looks like a cheap mobile game and I hate saying that about a game that otherwise looks like some love went into making it. Oh well this game exists so maybe that'll help fill that SRPG void!
Thank you for this review! The game's on sale on Steam now and this convinced me to give it a shot. I absolutely love the old school Fire Emblem games and seeing how familiar that battle style and animation are means I would love playing this one too. :D
I just grabbed the limited run physical of the game because of this review and Iam so excited to play Thru it, I loved GBA fire emblem and this looks like it plays very similar
I played Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga first. And I sunk 40 hours into that game and I actually don't really enjoy gaming anymore. To see this game was made by the same publisher gets my interest! Though it's older.
Absolutely loving the game so far! The combat and design elements of the game are incredibly well done! The only thing I’ve found slightly annoying is that there’s no mid map suspend function so I had to make sure I made enough time to finish maps and get to a save. The character designs are great and I’m curious to know who your favorite is! Mine is Sloane lol
the game gearing and class design disappointing to a point like there no reason to advance on higher gears and class tier like i dont even get how the final class get out match by normal tier mobs its so pathetic to a point i dont see a reason to grind my units anymore after seeing some of my characters get bench by normal mobs lol end is like no matter if all your units and 2nd class and orange tier weapons all mobs have the same rank as yours so it like RNG who hits the crit most of the time
Threw it on my wishlist, I'll pick it up when it gets down to 20 bucks. Sounds fun though the maps artwork looked a little meh to me but if the battles are half as fun as you claim it'll be worth it!
Definitely gives off the old school FE vibes. I wouldn't mind if the relationship mechanic got removed entirely, but I'd really like to see more games with branching narrative. For example, old FE games had 'X' chapters that could only be unlocked if you met the right conditions in past battles. It adds to the replay value if there are multiple endings especially when the game is only 20 hours.
I’m not one for buying many PC games due to my outdated hardware but looking at the graphics would it be fair to say that the requirements aren’t too high?
@@TheGamingShelf when one levels up, no stats are raised. Stats are still raisable by promotion and stat boosters but leveling will not provide those. I believe every fire emblem game on every difficulty - except maybe awakening lunatic+ - is beatable on 0% growths
How is the AI? Is it like in Fire Emblem where all the enemy units will suicide themselves into your overpowered units? Or do they stay back and use strategy like in something like Tactics Ogre
On the Hero difficulty it’s a little bit of both. Some will focus on your troops with the lowest HP and other times they basically set themselves up to be killed with counterattacks. I always felt challenged though. I never felt like I could breeze my way through maps. I got troops killed all the time because of stupid positioning.
The only Strategy RPGs that do it exactly like this are the GameBoy Advance Fire Emblem titles. There are however other great strategy RPGs on PC like the Disgaea games and Tactics Ogre Reborn.
Tbh I don't get why people say this is like classic fire emblem. To me it gives off birthright vibes. And with that I would recommend it if you enjoy a more casual experience of fire emblem (like three houses hard. Birthright hard. And radiant dawn easy.)
All I can do is let my characters move and wait. Can't attack. When I click attack, the character is reset to its original position. How do you attack an opponent now?
Click attack if you start with one enemy in range. If not, click your character, click the spot you want them to move to, then click the enemy you want them to attack (which brings up the combat forecast, after which you must decide whether to confirm or abort). Like the man said, could do with more obvious tutorial.
After playing Growlanser IV and Arc the Lad Spirit of the Twilight I can't go back to those linear SRPG like these with no exploration to speak of sadly. I want to go in towns, kingdoms, dungeons, solve puzzles, do side quests. I feel like Fire Emblem lack that quality I wanted from most SRPG while a few SRPG far surpass FE in so many ways.
finished the game and its pretty much mediocre game! theres literally no point grinding your units to it final class coz its going to be pretty much a downgrade just like cia is better a thief but once you reach lvl 30 and turn her to trickster she looses a bunch of evasion and damage that even normal tier enemies can kill her instant theres no point grinding since the game forces each scenario to a balance fight so i see no point why bother upgrading your gears and class no point waste of time
I definitely don't agree that the game's graphics are very good. The problem is that it has about four different art styles, all of varying quality. You have the full-blown art of the individual characters used during bonding scenes. These are pretty decent but very static. Then you have these completely different detailed pixel-art combat animations, which are great. Then you have the tiny pixel-art units on the map, which are okay-ish. And then there's the environmental art on the maps that honestly looks like complete shit sometimes. Especially the maps where buildings are involved look really awful, like they were done in MS Paint or something. All 4 styles look completely different and even clash quite a bit with each other.
Bond events were really boring and im a kinda guy who likes to read everything usually... (aside from tutorial texts lol) Its true that they dont have really much to do with anything going on in the game story.. also I feel like its just bunch of awkard sounding small talk for the most part. I tried to go through them but a) theres so much of it! b) like I said its kinda boring and pointless.
I have to disagree with the maps. They feel boring and monotonous because there is no terrain . The fact that you have fixed type matchups for your classes without terrain cover or differing movement costs for terrain makes the map feel bland and everything a stat check. SRPGs are at their best when stat checking isn't so pronounced.

Nice vid Taylor, keep up the good work chief
Thanks Tim 🙏
thanks never would have known about this, hopefully is easier than Vestaria Saga
It presents a nice challenge but you won’t be hanging your head against the wall. It also has 3 difficulties to choose from.
The red and green arrows features was taken from the Total War: Warhammer games, where when one unit is selected, it shows what they're good against.

This reminds me most of Shining Force.
Man i miss that franchise.
I will check it out this weekend
Nice 👍
Definitely checking this out 🙏🏾
You totally should! It’s a really great game 😁
I backed it on KS and got my key. I'm wrapping up my playthrough of the Ninja Gaiden collection on Switch so I may have to check this out next.
Awesome! It’s definitely worth a play for sure.
Once again, fantastic review Taylor! Combat does look fun
Thanks dudes 😁

Yeah the backgrounds aren’t great but they disappear honestly when you start focusing on your strategy. The gameplay itself is so good.

@Tripzz Thanks, I did try that one already. Needs some work but at least it's closer to what I'm looking for in a tactics game.
I just got Octopath traveler cause I wanna dive deeper into these JRPG's! Maybe this will be next 🤫
If you’re not used to this kind of game it might be challenging. I would try something like Fire Emblem Three Houses first.
Great review as always man. This would fit so well on the Switch!
Thank you! And yes I totally agree. I should come to Switch yesterday.
The devs have confirmed a console release coming later on but its gonna be a while.

Probably not. The requirements should be on the steam page but yeah shouldn’t be anything crazy.
Looks neat! I know 0% growths is a big thing a fire emblem so I'm curious how a 0% growths run of Dark Deity would go
As in no leveling up?

Look at gameplay from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade and you’ll see why people are saying that. They look so similar.

It depends on how it sells.

The supports not giving buffs or any advantage in gameplay was an intended decision, not because they couldn't do it
I watched a couple of reviews and the consensus is that Dark Deity is not for those new to Strategy RPGs.

Oh no, too bad it's a PC exclusive... My PC can't handle anything
> Pixel art is a dying art
You clearly don't play a lot of indie games lmao, like 90% of those are pixel art graphics
Was just about to write the exact same thing 😅.. in AAA, sure, but the indie scene is FLOODED with it
That’s more what I was getting at. Arc Systems has gone away from pixel art for their fighting games for more 3D.
I don't like the 8bit pixel graphics
the control of characters in this game is very clonky and slow...i dont recomend it at all
Say Deity again lol....
If you say it three times in a row I hear you summon a demon 👀
This game is unfinished. Watch Mangs’s video on this game. DO NOT BUY.
Felt pretty finished to me 🤷🏻♂️
Pixel arts should be dead long time ago.
5.8 user score tho (metacritic). I'm afraid I think that's a close score unfortunately...
