    Oh no, the struggles in the beginning. I love the "transformation nonsense" comment. :D Sometimes palettes are so unnecessarily complicated. The paints seem nice and your paintings are wonderful as always.

      Yes, this one is definitely a contraption somewhere near THAT Schmincke palette, on the scale of "unnecessarily complicated" paint palettes XD

    I know what those slot are for! There is version of this palette, where there is no white and black in pans, but tubes on their places (same colors). When you move the white or black color, it should fit 8ml tube of aquafine. I have seen it in person here at art store.

    I like the Aquafine paints and have used them both in tubes and pans. The Ultramarine is a particular favourite of mine. I wouldn’t buy that palette though as I think there’s a lot of space wasted between the pans. I do like their travel palette which is really compact!

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Місяць тому +1

      It is a very "vast" palette, I agree! While I hate when my pans touch, this might be a bit too much distance between colors...

    Honestly I like the overly complicated palette. I also like Aquafine. I got a tiny palette and worked through one of Charles Evans books with it. I was surprised by how good the paintings turned out, the paint behaves really well for a student range. It made me try some of the D-R artists grade range, which I was surprised by.. some colors were really good(cad red and ultramarine are gorgeous) another was awful(coeruleum). When they go on sale at Jacksons or Bromleys, they can be very reasonable, even with shipping to the states.

      I'm glad you also enjoy these paints! I first tried the paints in the small 10 colors palettes, years ago, and I was so surprised! They are really good! And also very affordable indeed :D

      @@EveBolt yeah !! I got it in the early 00s when I was at uni, most of the colours got used up but I ended up getting rid of the rest when I did a big supply clean out ,I wish I kept the pallet though 😞

    I’ve tried their professional range in pans and while they are not easy to find (and rather pricey), they are really nice quality. Pans don’t come full to the top, so I cannot recommend them as a good deal for your money, but maybe their professional range in tubes will be a better deal and same performance.

      Ooo, good to know! I haven't had the chance to try their pro range, I hope I can someday :)

    If I had this pallette instead of the tiny Cotman one I would have painted more. I like the different spaces for mixing and that I would be able to store some tiny things in there. Though I feel a lot of the space is wasted with the pans arranged like that. If I buy a set now I look for maximum storage, so I can occasionally exchange two half pans for a full one if I want to. But I'd say those round spaces in the top pallette might be able to hold some tube paint as a substitute for the lost space.
    I have to say I do own only two travel kits that actually leave the house, one is from Jackson's and looks like something to store sunglasses in. It was cheap for what's included (I exchanged the cheap paint). The other one is even tinier, but with more slots from Aliexpress and it's great to use both.
    Other sets stay indoors because they're too big.

    I had this set. While i did enjoy the paints, the palette was just too bulky, and overtime acquiring better quality of paints, it just collected dust.

    • @EveBolt

      Ooo, thanks for sharing! It is quite bulky, I agree. It seems quite durable but would not be my go-to travel set, it's just too big XP

    This case is a bit gimmicky but I do like slide out mixing trays. They wasted too much space for holding the half pans of paint, though. I wish someone would create a sectioned portable mixing tray made of porcelain - thin to keep lightweight but backed with perhaps stainless steel for support. I just love the way porcelain doesn’t bead up the watercolor mixes and cleans so beautifully! My niece is a potter so maybe I can get her to create something!

    I purchased some Aquafine tubes recently. I can’t say I like them. I’m still trying them, though, maybe I’ll change my mind. I previously tried four paints from the Aquafine range; I was also not impressed back then.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Місяць тому +1

      Which colors did you get in this recent purchase? And what makes them "meh" to you at this time? I'm curious :)

      @@EveBolt I got Gamboge Hue PY153, Ultramarine Blue Light PB29, Ultramarine Pink PR259, Ultramarine Violet PV15, Quinacridone Magenta PR122, Purple Lake PV19, Transparently Turquoise PB16, Viridian Hue PG7, Raw Umber PBr7 and Titanium White PW6. The Ultramarine is very chalky. The paints do not feel strong: I’ve already used 1/6th or 1/5th of the PG7 just for swatching and testing some mixes. The paints are a bit lifeless and don’t seem as transparent as other brands, but I should note that I am still trying them out.
      On the plus side, I did find PY153, which has been discontinued for some time now. I also like the mixes I can make: I get beautiful Payne’s Grey hues by mixing the PG7 with either the PV19 or the PR259 or the PV15. I also get beautiful greys (Payne’s greyish) by mixing the Ultramarine with the Raw Umber. I like PB16 over the other phthalocyanines, but I have yet to try it in mixes and in a painting.
      For the record, I watched on Khadi paper.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Місяць тому +1

      @@awatercolourist These seem like lovely colors, in theory (they have a PR259???). The ultramarine is very very opaque but the color is quite clean, so I'm curious about the chalkiness you seem to have experienced.
      Have you thought about swatching them on black paper to assess their transparency level?

    • @awatercolourist
      @awatercolourist Місяць тому

      @@EveBolt I only used a black line, but no, I have not used them on black paper. The Ultramarine noticeably suits on the paper rather than paints the paper.
