  • A conversation with Lee Isaac Chung, Steven Yeun, Yeri Han, Yuh-Jung Youn, Alan Kim, and Noel Cho, moderated by Film at Lincoln Center Director of Programming Dennis Lim.
A tender and sweeping story about what roots us, Minari follows a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. The family home changes completely with the arrival of their sly, foul-mouthed, but incredibly loving grandmother. Amidst the instability and challenges of this new life in the rugged Ozarks, Minari shows the undeniable resilience of family and what really makes a home. An A24 release.

Minari in this film represents Korean spirit I think. Granma was planting Minari as it is gratefully useful for Korean dishes but also it is growing widely and well when it is planted and settles. It just reminded my earlier period living in England and so similar to our troubles, trouble shootings, and stay together whatever happens. So touching and amazing. I feel like my all troubles were touched and comforted by this film. Thank you to all who made this film!!!

This movie definitely had me holding back tears...
After the film ended, I sat reminiscing about my Grandma and my cherished memories together, who passed a few months ago. For the details within the interactions between the Grandma and Grandson had far too many parallels to my own upbringing.
    1. As a young child, I remember often complaining to my parents whenever they left me with her.. I'm sure I may have made rude and childish comments towards her or in front of her, but never in my life was she offended or upset because of me. Just like the character in the film, her love was really unconditional.
    2. We would spend a lot of time in her garden, as she made me water the different Korean vegetables she grew (Korean zucchini, sesame leaves, chili peppers, squash, green onions....... and minari).
    3. As an 8 year old, she taught me how to play Hwatu (the red card game) and would play often... until I got a gameboy and stopped hanging out with her as much :(
    4. When she would visit Korea, she'd always come back with large bags of dried pepper flakes, anchovies, squid....... and those dreadful medicinal roots.
    5. My grandma would always try to protect me and intervene when I was getting punished for misbehaving or acting up.
    6. She'd often pocket money from my grandpa and pass it to me surreptitiously. And a handful of time, it happened exactly like how it was portrayed through the film, in the backseat of the car.
    7. She had a potty mouth (no pun intended). The funny thing is that I would innocently incorporate these words/phrases to my limited Korean vocabulary, without having any idea that some of the things she said were on the extreme end of offensive profanity. Unfortunately, I would only find out much later that these were "bad words" when my parents would hear me say it... or even worse, other Korean adults...
I shamefully admit that I felt annoyed at one point, because I naively thought that these elements of our relationship were uniquely ours. However, I was quickly overwhelmed by
    quirks)

At the Golden Globes a film with
      at
      least
      51%
      non-English
      dialogue qualifies for 'Best
      Motion
      Picture
      - Foreign Language' (or Best Foreign Film). And that film cannot qualify for the Best Picture Award ..which is
      exclusively
      for
English language films. These criteria have become controversial the last couple years, most notably with this film as it is an American made film. While the pressure has been put on the Globes to alter their eligibility criteria no word of any changes has been announced.

@@Cavers I'm native Korean with living South Korea, and i think this movie's totally American Movie.coursely this looks Korean movie but what this actors and directors saying in movie is the story of immigrants who have struggled from diff culture, and life style in total diff situations. And i love that it's not saying stereotypical southern white hollywood ethnic slur in this Touchy time.

@@user-ri4tw2dw9q I know! I'm saying that this film is eligible for the Golden Globes foreign language category. I don't however feel like it should be eligible for foreign film for the Oscars and it was absolutely disgraceful that it wasn't eligible for Best Picture for the Golden Globes.

There is not an official language in the US. What’s foreign language and what’s not in the States? The Golden Globes are categorizing the movie English language films vs. non-English film that is giving messages that non-English languages are minorities and are not valuable enough. The opportunities of winning awards and being honored to be nominated are taken away from this American movie that deserves all the opportunities because it’s not filmed English. Agains English is not an official language in the States. At the same time, the non-American films that were filmed in English language did get the opportunities. What’s the real purpose of this award anyway? It’s so shameful. They really should be aware of this nonsense and change the award title.
