As korean, I could not even figure out how to pronounce his surname correctly. I always thought it was Yoon which is a common Korean surname and he just spells it differently. I actually just look it up in Korean and I finally found out how it should be pronounced too. yeah he actually pronounces it correctly and like the attitude he tries to pronounce Minari correctly even.

But, when she studied art, I got so much guff from my friends for allowing her to study such a nonlucrative field. I guess, since Israel is in Asia, and that's where we originated, we could be considered Asian, but I doubt you meant us when you said Asian. When I was going to grad school, in computer science in the 90s, I mentioned to a fellow student that I was usually the only woman in any class I took, and if there were another woman, she was Asian. She was Chinese-American, and said to me, "You're a Jew, we consider you Asian too." (btw In a Compiler class of over 50 students, she and I got 2 of the 3 "A"s the professor gave, and we were the only women.)

This is a commentary on all talk-shows: don’t interviewers have anything better to ask their Asian guests other than how their parents feel about them being in the entertainment industry? No other ethnic groups get asked this, and the answer seldom changes. (no offense to Stephen, because I believe him to be a kind, self-aware person)
We’re trying to NOT seem like pariahs in an industry that already lacks Asian representation... and this question does nothing but further ostracize us based off of invalid stereotypes. Just... do better, @Hollywood.

    • @too2great8

I don't think Stephen was being stereotypical by asking that question. I have seen that question asked of other people who are also from other countries and continents. The experiences of 2nd or 3rd generation people no matter where their parents come from is interesting and I for one love to hear about it. I want to know how their parents feel because the entertainment industry isn't one where people who do come to America for a better life or for whatever reason, see their kids in. I think it's a legit question, meant not to offend.

The hardest thing about being an immigrant is the feeling that you don’t really “fit” in any community. Not really accepted as American, but also not really Korean either. We have to speak as if we’re the ambassador for all Korean culture, but really the only way we way have experience is through traditions and story passed down from family and brief reunions. I noticed Steven Yeun was hesitating with answering Colbert when he asked how to correctly pronounce Minari. Because we grew up with English as our primary language, Korean becoming a second-hand back burner, even us Korean-Americans grossly butcher the beautiful Korean language with our elementary level speaking skills. So we can’t really critique you guys if you pronounce it incorrectly because we ourselves aren’t 100% certain we’re saying it correctly ourselves. I’m sure there are a lot of native Koreans out there who are going to attack Steven Yeun after watching this movie, saying how he destroyed Korean language and culture with his ugly and brutish Americanized Korean. ‘How dare he try to speak as if he’s Korean’ ‘What a has-bin’ ‘my little brother can speak better than this dude’ and so forth.... We want to share our story, but we’re expected to tell the narrative from the country’s perspective that best fits their image of what is a Korean-American. I’m just a person that’s American, and neither do I want to ignore my heritage as a Korean. It can be discouraging that for some Koreans, no matter how well you may speak their language or learn of their culture, they will never accept us as Korean enough. Sure we didn’t have a typical Korean school kid’s background, we didn’t have that pressure of seuneung (Korean entrance exams), the pressure to not date and have fun until college. But many of us had parents who celebrated our first birthday Korean style wearing hanbok and having doljabi (picking item ceremony). We were expected to succed academically, although it was easier getting straight A’s in American schools, that did mean having to put our academics before social events many times. We were expected to enter a distinguished and known university Ivy League, UCLA, UC Berkeley, privately distinguished universities like Wesleyan, Northwestern, USC... and to become either a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. Because our parents came to America with the dream that their children will succeed by giving us every opportunity they weren’t given in Korea. This of course limited their outlook into such small job prospectives, and they can’t imagine any other career will bring their child to success. With the added pressure of making our parents proud because they moved to an entirely new country for our well-being, it’s a whole ‘nother level of trying to not disappoint your parents. On top of that because many Asian Americans have similarly the same narrative, parents who immigrated to America for them to succeed and go to a good college, the competition for these schools become fiercer. We are no longer competing against white-Americans for the same spots in college on equal footing. Asian-Americans have to get higher grades and show higher performance results in order to get these spots that they are competing with other Asian-Americans. On top of that, other minorities are given priority before Black-Americans, hispanics, and native americans. The result of affirmative action makes it harder for specifically asian-Americans to enter these good colleges. So I would argue going into these Ivy League and top level schools are just as difficult as entering a university in Seoul. Universities in America purposefully are handing-out a percentage of seats to each demographic, so the playing field isn’t really fair from the beginning. The reason why I’m spending so much time on this is because of how much flack we’re given for not being as studious as other Asians. Yes generally, the average American doesn’t study, but Asian-Americans are above average, they have to be to survive in a competitive environment that does no favors for them, and I would argue even actively tries to give them a handicap. There’s a Harvard study which shows the negative effects affirmative action has been having on Asian-Americans. But because we’re viewed as not as studious as our fellow counter-parts in Asia, we are considered not worthy of calling ourself part of their culture. ‘We never had it as hard as then’ ‘we just took the easy road, running away to another country’ ‘you aren’t really Korean because you didn’t suffer like us living in Korea’. Yes we didn’t go through the same exact lifetime events as Koreans, but just like them we were going through hardships that can be only understood as someone being perceived as a foreigner in another country and having to adjust to a different culture with parents who had no understanding of the social laws and legal knowings the Average American holds. They had to figure out American taxes, housing mortgages, getting loans from banks without getting screwed over by people who will take advantage of their financial ignorance, education finance plans, how to save money, etc.... My parents still don’t know what’s a 401k and how to save for their retirement, the idea of buying stocks and bonds to grow your wealth for retirement, etc... These were things we had to find out ourselves through our own initiative. Nothing is handed to us. Nobody is there to offer advice or help, we have to find it and actively seek for it ourselves. All my parents knew was we had to go to school and get the best grades. SAT and SAT prep schools, college councillors, financial aid, nobody was there to give us pointers, we had to find that ourselves and this was before you can just google it.
I’m really proud of how far Steven has come on his journey as an Asian-American actor. I don’t mean to rant, it’s just I’m sick of people not giving credit due because “they aren’t really Korean so they can never relate to the struggles of Koreans so they have no right to tell their story”. Steven Yeun and every one of those who have worked hard to get where they’re at, they have every right to proudly consider themselves as part of their native culture. Steven Yeun shoudn’t have to walk on eggshells to give an answer about his heritage, he should say it with pride, that yes he’s just as much Korean as the Koreans in Korea. (Doesn’t mean we are exactly the same because of living in a foreign country we have acquired culture from living in another country). You can be both Korean and American. How is that so hard to understand?
