    Uncut Gems is a 2019 American crime thriller film directed by Josh and Benny Safdie, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ronald Bronstein. The film stars Adam Sandler, Kevin Garnett, Lakeith Stanfield, Julia Fox, Mike Francesa, Idina Menzel, and Eric Bogosian. The plot follows Howard Ratner, a jeweler and gambling addict in New York City's Diamond District, who gets in over his head with loan sharks and must retrieve an expensive gem he purchased in order to pay off his debts.

    The reason this film is so strong is there’s no over explaining context, the audience is forced to put the pieces together on their own. Also, the dialogue is like real life, especially in such a dense place like NY, nobody speaks one at a time when there’s 6+ people in a room. Both of these things made the story and the characters so believable, which is why a lot of casual movie goers had a tough time enjoying this film because it spits in the face of convention.

    • @noclipp
      @noclipp 4 роки тому +4

      Im not a casual movie goer. I don't really watch movies anymore, casual would be generous. I used to watch too much tv, I'm not ignorant to a good film. I don't see what this movie did specifically that made it a good film, but I'm not denying the claim, just expressing my experience. It was done well Imo, I just don't see the point or understand the reason for the story.

    Ever since watching the Safdie brother's previous feature, Good Time, I was eagerly awaiting their next feature. Good Time showed that they are masters of tension and momentum, with their impressive culmination of unique characters, editing, dialogue and of course musical scores, and Uncut Gems further cements that they are not only masters of tension, but they are truly two of the most exciting rising filmmakers right now. Also Adam Sandler should be nominated for an oscar for this amazing performance.

    I just want to say that the writers' versatility is incredible. They portrayed such a diverse mix of cultures, and did it so well. I am black and it's pretty dang impressive to see nuances of black culture and conversation so on point and so well done, especially by white/non-black directors. there's usually a sense of falseness , hints of a cultural disconnect in the dialogue but this film was handled that so perfectly bro. promise I don't mean to make this into a race thing lol , but it's really refreshing. Safdie brothers you guys did something great here! ! !

    • @christiansmith1389
      @christiansmith1389 2 роки тому +3

      No, this is a legitimate observation and one I’m glad you noticed. In NYC, the differences between many of these cultures are vast. And to capture that on film makes the movie feel natural and real.

      Great video man. This movie depicts the life with archetypical metaphors. It is our everyday struggle with life and people in a way. All that shouting and chaos... I felt so close to characthers and hated Howard's mistress. Thats an another thing! The loveless relationships based on wealth and power, the slut culture and bad women.. Toxic males and their ego's.. This movie literally depicts the biggest problems in 21st century. Safdie brothers literally find out and collected the main problems in the Western world, in a expressionistic way in this film. Instant classic.
      Also it was a true psychedelic joruney! The starting of this film and the visuals were verys pscyhedelic and karmic. I love the ending, how the camera gets inside to Howards body from that bullet hole.. it is so deep in many ways. Its like a everyday life of a modern man and we suck into it and get outside again with the camera. Just like life itself.. I can't believe they really did this film, its like winning that basketball game for Safdie brothers, they sure earned a lot of respect. It was also a metaphor too! But real successors keep themselves quiet like that basketball player, thats why Howard died at the end. Because he was feeding his ego too much maybe.. Wanted to share,i hope you felt these same things while watching man. This film was a real psyhedelic journey and had very humane emotions in it. And it shows the ultimate problems and duality of the life in 2 hours as we follow our main characthers last few days...

      Never feel bad for not enjoying a movie. Likeability is certainly a dimensions some creators consider when shaping their characters but I feel like the Safdie Brothers don't. They're more interested in creating portraits of people who are compelling because of the unique way manifest their will on the world and the people around them - regardless of how moral or immoral it may be.

    • @BehindtheCurtain
      @BehindtheCurtain  4 роки тому +26

      I wouldn't say antiquated, no. This is a film about the consequences of having a gambling addiction, so there are plenty of reasons to not like Howard. However, I don't think likability is the goal exactly. I think it's more about making the audience care about what the character is trying to do and why they need to do it. We have to have empathy, which means we have to view the character as a human. This is why Adam Sandler is great for this role. He makes Howard feel like a human trying to fix his wrongs, but struggling to do so. If Howard was being played by a cold calculated actor, I don't think the film would work as well. He would seem too much like a psychopath.
      That's my explanation, but don't feel bad if you don't like it. You don't need to like Uncut Gems to have good taste. These films can be difficult because Howard isn't a hero. He's not a role model. But Uncut Gems isn't trying to make him one either. It's a tragedy.
      Thanks for the continued support of my channel. Have a great day. :)

    I love good time and thought if this film was as confident is that it would be amazing but it just wasn't there... now when I saw the trailer and I made my own connections about what they had probably done what direction they were going in with The Arc of the story was I thought I was going to be walking into a much better crafted film... and I just didn't really enjoy some of the choices they made...

      It's important to see the full picture here, because of how long the Safdie's have been trying to get Uncut Gems made. Through that journey, the Safdie Brothers have further developed their filmmaking skills by making other films that have prepared them to make Uncut Gems what it finally manifested into.

    Safdie Brothers and Safdie Brothers fans don't hate me or think I hate you (I did hate Uncut Gems). I'm just trying to start some honest movie discourse here. I KNOW I'm not the only one who thought this movie was a piece of shit outside of the cinematography and the acting. The screenplay was trash to me. I will die with this opinion so I don't really give a f***k if you disagree
    I liked Good Time except for the part where the white guy says the n-word and the part where Robert Pattinson has sex with an underaged Black teenager

      Uncut Gems is masterpiece of a movie IMO but it only works if you like Howard, or if you want to see him fail. If you simply dislike seeing him onscreen and don't care what happens to him then this film just isn't for you, and is less about the writing and more about what your individual tastes are as a viewer. I can understand why people don't want to sit through this one but I love it.
