For hand made bespoke boots the South Korean market is relatively affordable. They generally run $750-1200 USD a pair. Having the equivalent done in the U.S. or the UK is about 4-6x more expensive. In fact a lot of semi-pro enthusiasts will make the trip Seoul just to get their hiking/skiing equipment manufactured as even with the cost of the trip it still ends up saving money.
Obviously not the same exact boot, but companies I know go through a similar level of craftsmanship are: Collegium, Baabuk, and Weller. All super pricy, but from what I've heard, totally worth the price.
I love vids like this I’m a crafty artsy person so these vids just are so satisfying to me. Wonderful job these men have done I bet these boots are amazing👏👏👏👏
There are already quite a few companies that do custom 3D printed shoes. The problem is that the general commercial market is very hard to compete with, and the bespoke market usually values the status of having an artisan specifically spend their time on one person. I do think you are right that 3D scanning and printing of the lasts (foot castings) will probably become a bigger thing in the bespoke market, and eventually algorithms will start to learn many of the design techniques craftsman were shown through apprenticeships.
@@LogicalNiko totally agree. There are limitations in both manufacturing processes. With 3d printing you might not have the paneling design aspects and the seemingly basic nature of a 3D printed shoe, and the current slow speed of printing. Even though I state 3D printed boot might become as good at traditional shoes/ boots. I believe there will always be a place for traditional shoes. I can’t even imagine not having a leather shoe or even a fabric shoe. Of course there will be shoes made with a combination of processes, maybe 3D printed lower, and traditional upper. Future is limitless
I was joking in my shorts comment, but I would actually travel to Korea for a pair. But how long does it take to make such shoes?? And what’s the price ₩ I can expect to pay? 😅
3:13 Just curious, does a hiking shoe always need a cork layer? What is the function ? Does it make the shoes more comfortable while users wearing them?
what is the purpose of making a cast of the guys feet? I did not see how this was used in the process of making the boot? was this used to make the form that the boot was built around?
He's not cheating on the brand. Schoeller Switzerland is a textile manufacturer like POLARTEC, GORE-TEX, and TORAY. 😂 I think he choose Schoeller's fabric to make the shoes waterproof.
