Do a sample gauge. Then in multiples of 10 determine the width of the blanket based on your gauge, minus the edging if you choose to have a boarder. Continue the pattern to the length you desire. I buy super saver size skeins and depending on the size of blanket buy one more skein than I think I’ll need. A salesperson can help you with the amounts.
Terri Pratt it requires reverse engineering of stitches on the even rows. Somewhat like knitting. For example, Where you would do a front post in the pattern row 2 you would do a back post.

How come you go through the back hump of the chains?
It leaves a cleaner edge on the bottom.
