  • What does alcohol do to your body under anesthesia for surgery? When should you hold off? It's important to know that consuming alcohol before surgery can lead to serious side effects that can affect the healing process and overall recovery.

One of the most significant risks associated with alcohol consumption before surgery is the potential for withdrawals after the procedure. These withdrawals can lead to delirium, seizures, and even death. Additionally, alcohol consumption can also increase the risk of bleeding during and after the surgery, which can prolong recovery time and lead to additional complications.
Another risk associated with alcohol consumption before surgery is the impact it can have on the immune system. When the immune system is compromised, it can lead to poor wound healing and an increased risk of infection.
Alcohol consumption can also lead to cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle becomes thick and stiff, making it harder for the heart to pump blood effectively. This can lead to heart failure and other serious health complications.
However, there is hope for those who struggle with alcohol addiction. Psychedelic components in anesthesia, such as ketamine, have been shown to have potential in the treatment of addiction and can be explored before and during surgery and anesthesia as a way to support the healing process.
It's important to have an open and honest conversation with your surgeon and anesthesiologist about your alcohol consumption and any history of addiction before your surgery. Together, you can make a plan to minimize the risks and ensure a safe and successful recovery. This video will give you a better understanding of the serious side effects associated with alcohol consumption before and during surgery and how psychedelic component of anesthesia can help in healing addiction and improve overall health.

I had just taken a month long break because my liver enzymes were up. I got my lab results saying that they were back to normal three days before a biopsy and hit the bottle again immediately. No medical professionals know I drink. Before that break it had been three years without skipping a day of downing at least a fifth of vodka a day. Clearly it’s a choice for me. I just hate sobriety. Alcohol benefits me in endless ways. I hope you manage to kick the habit if you want to.

I drank and was hung over the morning of my partial hysterectomy. I honestly didn't want to wake up from surgery. I was really dehydrated and had really bad diareah the next day. I went through with it. I told a lot of people to fuck off, including my husband after waking up. I was so angry.

I have a question. For alcoholics it can definitely impact surgery and anesthesia
what about folks who drink mild/moderately. Like the people who have a glass of wine with dinner or a beer or two most evenings.
Of course able to stop a few weeks before and after surgery just curious of the effects

Can't stand alcohol. Wish it never made it passed prohibition. Not sorry. That sh\T destroyed our mother which destroyed our family. The only positive is NONE of us 4 children consume alcohol. We have seen what it has done. It's brutal. Thank goodness none of us are addicts to alcohol/drugs.

I had a septic chock & got anaphylaxis chock in the ambulance. Then a few hours later l was in a coma. I'm on subutex/buprenorfin, zoplicon, oxascand, pregabalin/lyrica, medicinet(ritaline)/methylphenidate every Day. & I had taken heroin before the ambulance & the drs didn't know wich meds I was on.. I fortunately told them about my meds before I had multi organ failure and ended up on lifesupport. They said I could tolerate wsy more opiates then others.. I wonder, how are they handling it when sedating me? If they don't know all that's in my system how do they dosage the propofol etc? I had intrusive an non intrusive vent and was on RASS 5..

    Myth.
Also, drinking coffee just makes yoU MORE drunk!!!

I had cravings for a while, but after a couple years, the cravings are gone. I thank God for the strength. It was really difficult, and I'm really glad that I decided that I didn't want to use it any more.
