I've had a few surgeries. I know my life is in the anesthesiologist's hands while under, & knowing human beings are fallible, it causes quite a bit of anxiety. I make sure to "make my peace" before getting to the OR, & pray for all the team members...which seems to help me the most. Just before administering the anesthesia for my last surgery, my anesthesiologist asked, "Are you having a good morning so far?". I said, "Yes, are YOU having a good morning so far?" He chuckled, "Yeah". I sighed, Good!", in relief. I feel anesthesiologists have to be the bravest & most caring people in the world, & I thank you all! I can't imagine how anyone consented to or survived surgery before anesthesia.
When a patient is going to have surgery I feel that surgeons and anesthesiologists should find out how much the patient wants to know (curiosity) and then provide information accordingly. My first couple anesthesiologists held the mindset that I didn't need to know what processes and procedures were going to be used. I changed Drs., hospitals and even cities where I have my procedures. I also began educating myself about my issue, treatments, differences in anesthesia protocols, lasers, and recovery. My current team (since 2004) treats me like a 1st year med student. We get in the OR, I take a minute to thank everyone for the time, care, and expertise, and off I go. No Versid (sp) standard general, 90 minutes later waking up in the PACU. Still can't gather support for gurney races down Lombard.... but I'll keep asking. Thank you for great videos!!

The most embarrassing thing happened during my last back surgery. I didn't have to go to the john but as soon as they started putting me out all I could think of was too late. I guess I had to go. Embarrassing....
Why do they always wait sooo long to relax a patient before a surgery? They give you something to help 2 mins before anesthesia but they care NOTHING about the 1.5 hours you waited in pre-op! Those bed remotes have a “pain” button but they don’t have a “anxiety” button. Why is that?

I was curious if you’ve heard of R-CPD (Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction) and if you think it could have any effect on intubation.
Thank you for sharing! I had to look up R-CPD as I've never had a patient with that! Going based on www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6572913/#!po=10.0000 I do not foresee any complications with intubation, though rapid sequence induction would be prudent
After my back surgery in 2008 after being off the ventilator ,after 7 days from being sick , I thought the drs and nurse were trying to hurt me I thought I heard someone say I'm gonna take her chest tube out.and all.kinds of stuff I was yelling and telling them there not gonna hurt me I thought I seen things happening that wasnt .after mom had them to take me off the morphine I was acting normal. ICU schizophrenia
It's actually called ICU delirium, and it occurs in anywhere for 30 to 60% of patients. Thank you so much for raising awareness by sharing your experience. I'm sorry you had that happen to you though

I'm due for foot surgery, my 16th or 17th , I've lost count, any way, does the anesthesiologist give me a block in my foot, is that standard procedure, and am I awake when he does that or already asleep? No anxiety, just curious. Like I've said before, this is old hat and doesn't faze me anymore since I've had so many surgeries. 🤗
@@leewomack3498 😆 I hope your surgery goes well! Depending on exactly what the foot surgery is, the anesthesiologist may do a nerve block. I do my nerve blocks with patients awake but slightly sedated. Some anesthesiologists do it a little different, however, so I can't speak to your specific situation. I hope that helps!

Hi Dr. Kaveh I went in for a hysterectomy in 20111 and the anesthesia doctor said he would give me something to relax me. I have no idea what drug he gave me but I remember going out of the preop holding area down the hallway on my way to the o.r. I don’t remember anything after that. I woke up in recovery. He was talking to me and asking me questions just chitchatting while taking me out of the holding area. I tried to stay awake but I couldn’t. I have had surgery before and was given something to calm down and the ceiling was moving 😱😂 . It wasn’t a reaction I just felt loopy and the ceiling was moving. I was like y’all don’t see this? Now that I look back on it, I laugh at how ridiculous I must’ve sounded. 😂
Too bad none of my doctors explained this aspect of surgery. Still dealing with the medical trauma of surgery 3+ years later. Never want another surgery again.
I was just 6 years old when I had eye surgery. I vomited all night after the surgery. So I'm afraid of both the vomiting, and what the Dr's will say about me during surgery .I'm not a big person but you know how they are.

ialways wondered why when i had surgery, and i have had several. once i have an iv in and just laying there waiting to go into surgery and kind of having some panic, since i am not going any where, why do they never give you something to help you calm down a bit. always waited at least an hour or more to go into surgery. but when they come get you and rolling down the hallway, they give something in the iv that feels like you just drank a 12 pack of beer,and feel very happy. I am just wondering why they do not give something during the wait time. myind thinks of all kind of crazy things laying there waiting>
Back in 2010, I was having an appendectomy along with exploratory surgery done. I was given propophol (not sure what else). In recovery, I can (to this day) recite verbatim, the conversations amongst the nurses with my Mom & Husband! The. Nurse did the knuckle rub on my chest (It Hurt!). She tickled my feet etc... I was Screaming in my mind to let her know I could hear and feel Everything, but I could NOT move At All! I could Not communicate whatsoever! I've never been more terrified in my life! I heard the nurse say to my Mom, "She should have woken up by now!" I Was Fully Awake, and was screaming in my head "I'm awake! I Can hear Everything! Why can't I open my eyes? Why can't I kick your hand when you mess with my feet? Why can't I grab your hand everything you hurt me with the knuckle rub....Dr I fought as hard as I could to communicate to no avail. Finally, I felt myself Literally "slipping away", all the voices & conversations slowly sounded as if i were hearing them from far far away, as well as all the feeling I had, had, suddenly it was just a total heaviness of my body, feeling was gone. I remember thinking to myself, "Well, Heavenly Father, I hope they all know how much I love them. I can't fight anymore, the Michael Jackson drug is overtaking me, the Dr gave me too much. This is it, take me home if it is in fact the time." I do not remember anything after that. When I woke up I the voices were loud & clear again, it still took a bit to be able to open my eyes, but when they did, I saw the sweet nurse right in my face saying my name, and I said "Please do not do the chest knuckle rub on me anymore." I then recited verbatim All of the conversations, feeling everything but not being able to move, as you can imagine. Since then I am Terrified of any anesthesia. I cry and have anxiety severely (even with the pre meds they give me) and I wake up crying. I just can't seem to get over that traumatic experience to this day. I haven't had any procedures/surgery since 2016 so I'm great! 😊🙏 Thank you for taking your precious time making these very informative videos! Many Blessings to you, wish all Dr's had such a soothing & caring spirit and bedside manner as you!

@@sl4983 I do not remember feeling pain from the surgical site until I was getting dressed to get discharged. Perhaps my adrenaline was running very high trying to communicate/respond to the nurses and my Mother!? (the Dr here might have an explanation for that.) That's a great question! You made me think back and realize that ty! Again, I suppose I was just focused on the pain of the knuckle rubs (they do hurt, I had a large bruise, those nurses know the Exact spot to knuckle every single time!), as well as the terror of not being able to respond in any way, thinking I was not going to wake up.

@medicalsecrets I am able to repeat verbatim conversations around me when versed is used, and totally recall tube removal.😭 (during general or twilight sedation.) It infuriates the surgeon to be told how they swore, etc.
My first emergency surgery was horrible because when the mask was placed on my face l didn’t feel any oxygen. This scared me so bad l grabbed the mask and l was quickly knocked out. Once l was awake l remember everything and now l extremely fearful to get surgery. I hope this UTube video helps me.

Got placed in a tough spot last 2 surgeries anxiety-wise unable to control with the breathing techniques. One was during COVID and I had gotten call 15minutes before pre-op that I had been laid off of work and medical benefits ended that night at midnight. Second time was too worried about pain because surgeon hadn’t believed me for about 6months prior. Both cases the anesthesiologist was amazing but I wasn’t able to control the severe anxiety
Still hot a flashback due to anxiety botched iv line left my arm as black as was ok the first tome but second surgery was a nervous wreck big butterflies tried to fight the airway guy got growled at squrimed on op table staff yried tn calm me down can remver warm blanket and the sound of the heart moniter in the room begfore being given pethadine ti knock me out woke up trying to bat the mask off my face but the staff beat me too it .coughed check all fongers and toes were there had broken ulna and had plated inseretedand one removed along with screws .first op 6 hkurs second op a bit shorter 3 hours hated the second
I appreciate the breathing to relax. I used it during my radio frequency ablation for lower back pain, because I didn't want or use any IV sedation. I got too much Lidocaine, could taste it, told him and he decided not to give me any more. He did the last nerve without it and I was able to use the breathing, to make it through it, with no complaints.
Found your channel and love it. When I was a teen, had my wisdom teeth out. I remember waking up and freaking out, saying “I am gonna have a seizure” (history of epilepsy). They applied the mask to my face and I fell back asleep. I have been afraid of surgery ever since. Using this data to help me overcome.

Before my surgery when anesthesiologist put anesthesia, I started to choke, couldn’t breathe and I felt oxygen wasn’t going to my lungs. It was only on my chest and i started more panic and screaming that I can’t breathe. All I remember they put oxygen mask and while they were pumping that oxygen mask, the air I was receiving didn’t go to my lungs, it was only on my chest and then I don’t remember cuz i asleep. I have upcoming surgery and I’m scared to face the same problem. May I have any suggestions 😢
I watched quite a few of your videos and you seem very good at what you do , meaning competent, and compassionate. Two thoughts that primarily occupy ( obsessively so) are my pet peeve that too many medical professionals seem to think that giving an agent that prevents a patient from forming new memories of an unpleasant or painful procedure is one of the giant leaps in medicine. I am far more concerned with not experiencing the pain, than experiencing it at least some level of consciousness but not forming memory of the event taken to its most extreme example would be instance of being put to torture, but your torturer were humane enough to give you enough midazolam to ensure that you never remembered the events. Who would be comfortable with that situation. My other concern and probably most importantly is my fear that the so-called opioid/opiate crisis has affected medical professionals to the degree that they are even more worried than they were in the past about prescribing sufficient painkilling drugs. I don’t know who the author was but one of my favorite quotes is…..”Let us avoid making surgical patients pay with unnecessary suffering for the opioid overprescribing sins of others.”
I’m nervous about being abused while being so vulnerable. I’ve heard tales of a women screaming in agony while having her insides stitched only to have the surgeon chuckle and say he’ll just give her ketamine to make her forget. I’m terrified of something like that happening although it’s highly rare, just hearing a story like that had my anxiety at 100%.
I don't know if my body can take all of the drugs that this Dr talks about in his videos. My body has never ANY type of drug(good or bad) in my system,much less the heavy drugs that the Dr often talks about in his videos. I had eye surgery when I was just 6 yrs. old. They gave me what I now know to be some sort of preop med to take before I went in, and I vomited it all back up. I also vomited all night after the surgery too. So I'm VERY sensitive to medications. Especially ones that I've never had in my system befor
Why does the anti- anxiety medication administered before surgery always cause me to feel overwhelmed and suicidal? However, I am not anxious before the administration of this medication.

I hope you don't need any biopsies, but if you do, they can be done under sedation. General anesthesia is often not required. But of course, ask your anesthesiologist with the specific information

Not worth the risk. I wanted a tummy tuck, but no way was i doing general anesthesia for a cosmetic procedure. I had a horrible experience once, for an elective, non-cosmetic procedure, and never again. General anesthesia has to be fir a life-saving procedure only. In fact, the surgeon i consulted said that maybe we could do regional... Even then the slight risk of paralysis was enough to kiss the idea of getting a tummy tuck goodbye. Getting a mini facelift soon... Under local.
I have a chest reconstruction/mastectomy coming up later this month & I've honestly been putting it off for YEARS due to fears of anesthesia & fears of post-op pain. I've been doing a lot of research - reading PubMed, medical textbooks, watching Kaveh & other anesthesiologists, watching surgery videos. For me personally? It's alleviated my anxiety so much. Reason one: While general anesthesia has risks of complications, it's pretty safe [especially w/ all of the monitoring equipment they're mandated to use!!]. It's also really cool to learn how all of the agents they use work on the brain & body to keep us from experiencing the bodily trauma of surgery. Reason two: Knowledge is power... I'm a little bit of a control freak & not knowing how things work or what they're going to do scares me. It's intimidating as hell, but I've told my surgeon advance that I'm a bit anxious & he's been supportive, so... I trust that I'm in good hands. Importantly, hands that won't get mad at me for being antsy or freaked out, lol. It's ultimately your body, your family, & your decision. But if that surgery would make you feel better about yourself & bring you joy? It's an idea worth keeping on the table.
With all due respect, those of use with panic disorder have been in years of therapy to help with this. A doc trying to calm us down in the operating room isn’t gonna cut it. Yall have to drug us before
you know what would ease my anxiety before my surgery.... not calling everything a procedure, and stating flatly, no matter what you are going home that day. Also, stating if I cannot urinate I will be sent home with a catheter and I can remove it myself...... Or if I have problems, just go to the ER. You know, the one with the 18 hour wait time. Maybe if you treat us like human being again and not like slabs of meat at a butchers, I'd feel less stressed.
It is a very unpleasant feeling, indeed. Reason why I loathe hospitals. But i guess that they need to detach emotionally to perform their job efficiently.

Yes! When possible, I always advocate for conservative treatment. In some cases though surgery is needed :/

I love the warmth and comfort feeling that I feel for like 2 seconds when they put the anesthesia into the IV, before passing out.

Finally, I felt myself Literally "slipping away", all the voices & conversations slowly sounded as if i were hearing them from far far away, as well as all the feeling I had, had, suddenly it was just a total heaviness of my body, feeling was gone. I remember thinking to myself, "Well, Heavenly Father, I hope they all know how much I love them. I can't fight anymore, the Michael Jackson drug is overtaking me, the Dr gave me too much. This is it, take me home if it is in fact the time." I do not remember anything after that. When I woke up I the voices were loud & clear again, it still took a bit to be able to open my eyes, but when they did, I saw the sweet nurse right in my face saying my name, and I said "Please do not do the chest knuckle rub on me anymore." I then recited verbatim All of the conversations, feeling everything but not being able to move, as you can imagine. Since then I am Terrified of any anesthesia. I cry and have anxiety severely (even with the pre meds they give me) and I wake up crying. I just can't seem to get over that traumatic experience to this day. I haven't had any procedures/surgery since 2016 so I'm great! 😊🙏 Thank you for taking your precious time making these very informative videos! Did you feel pain during the surgery
@@sl4983 I do not remember feeling pain from the surgical site until I was getting dressed to get discharged. Perhaps my adrenaline was running very high trying to communicate/respond to the nurses and my Mother!? (the Dr here might have an explanation for that.) That's a great question! You made me think back and realize that ty! Again, I suppose I was just focused on the pain of the knuckle rubs (they do hurt, I had a large bruise, those nurses know the Exact spot to knuckle every single time!), as well as the terror of not being able to respond in any way, thinking I was not going to wake up.

It infuriates the surgeon to be told how they swore, etc.
My first emergency surgery was horrible because when the mask was placed on my face l didn’t feel any oxygen. This scared me so bad l grabbed the mask and l was quickly knocked out. Once l was awake l remember everything and now l extremely fearful to get surgery. I hope this UTube video helps me.

Got placed in a tough spot last 2 surgeries anxiety-wise unable to control with the breathing techniques. One was during COVID and I had gotten call 15minutes before pre-op that I had been laid off of work and medical benefits ended that night at midnight.
Second time was too worried about pain because surgeon hadn’t believed me for about 6months prior.
Both cases the anesthesiologist was amazing but I wasn’t able to control the severe anxiety

Still hot a flashback due to anxiety botched iv line left my arm as black as was ok the first tome but second surgery was a nervous wreck big butterflies tried to fight the airway guy got growled at squrimed on op table staff yried tn calm me down can remver warm blanket and the sound of the heart moniter in the room begfore being given pethadine ti knock me out woke up trying to bat the mask off my face but the staff beat me too it .coughed check all fongers and toes were there had broken ulna and had plated inseretedand one removed along with screws .first op 6 hkurs second op a bit shorter 3 hours hated the second
I appreciate the breathing to relax. I used it during my radio frequency ablation for lower back pain, because I didn't want or use any IV sedation. I got too much Lidocaine, could taste it, told him and he decided not to give me any more. He did the last nerve without it and I was able to use the breathing, to make it through it, with no complaints.
I am just anxious about the surgery itself 😅

Found your channel and love it. When I was a teen, had my wisdom teeth out. I remember waking up and freaking out, saying “I am gonna have a seizure” (history of epilepsy). They applied the mask to my face and I fell back asleep. I have been afraid of surgery ever since. Using this data to help me overcome.

Um, what if their anxiety is from not knowing or not remembering?
Before my surgery when anesthesiologist put anesthesia, I started to choke, couldn’t breathe and I felt oxygen wasn’t going to my lungs. It was only on my chest and i started more panic and screaming that I can’t breathe. All I remember they put oxygen mask and while they were pumping that oxygen mask, the air I was receiving didn’t go to my lungs, it was only on my chest and then I don’t remember cuz i asleep.
I have upcoming surgery and I’m scared to face the same problem. May I have any suggestions 😢

I watched quite a few of your videos and you seem very good at what you do , meaning competent, and compassionate. Two thoughts that primarily occupy ( obsessively so) are my pet peeve that too many medical professionals seem to think that giving an agent that prevents a patient from forming new memories of an unpleasant or painful procedure is one of the giant leaps in medicine. I am far more concerned with not experiencing the pain, than experiencing it at least some level of consciousness but not forming memory of the event taken to its most extreme example would be instance of being put to torture, but your torturer were humane enough to give you enough midazolam to ensure that you never remembered the events. Who would be comfortable with that situation. My other concern and probably most importantly is my fear that the so-called opioid/opiate crisis has affected medical professionals to the degree that they are even more worried than they were in the past about prescribing sufficient painkilling drugs. I don’t know who the author was but one of my favorite quotes is…..”Let us avoid making surgical patients pay with unnecessary suffering for the opioid overprescribing sins of others.”
I’m nervous about being abused while being so vulnerable. I’ve heard tales of a women screaming in agony while having her insides stitched only to have the surgeon chuckle and say he’ll just give her ketamine to make her forget. I’m terrified of something like that happening although it’s highly rare, just hearing a story like that had my anxiety at 100%.
I don't know if my body can take all of the drugs that this Dr talks about in his videos. My body has never ANY type of drug(good or bad) in my system,much less the heavy drugs that the Dr often talks about in his videos. I had eye surgery when I was just 6 yrs. old. They gave me what I now know to be some sort of preop med to take before I went in, and I vomited it all back up. I also vomited all night after the surgery too. So I'm VERY sensitive to medications. Especially ones that I've never had in my system befor

I hope you don't need any biopsies, but if you do, they can be done under sedation. General anesthesia is often not required. But of course, ask your anesthesiologist with the specific information
@@MedicalSecrets unfortunately he took some biopsies but I did good the Anesthesiologist used deep sedation because of panic attacks I had a panic attack so bad in pre I felt like I couldn't breathe

Not worth the risk. I wanted a tummy tuck, but no way was i doing general anesthesia for a cosmetic procedure. I had a horrible experience once, for an elective, non-cosmetic procedure, and never again. General anesthesia has to be fir a life-saving procedure only.
In fact, the surgeon i consulted said that maybe we could do regional...
Even then the slight risk of paralysis was enough to kiss the idea of getting a tummy tuck goodbye.

I have a chest reconstruction/mastectomy coming up later this month & I've honestly been putting it off for YEARS due to fears of anesthesia & fears of post-op pain. I've been doing a lot of research - reading PubMed, medical textbooks, watching Kaveh & other anesthesiologists, watching surgery videos. For me personally? It's alleviated my anxiety so much.
Reason one: While general anesthesia has risks of complications, it's pretty safe [especially w/ all of the monitoring equipment they're mandated to use!!]. It's also really cool to learn how all of the agents they use work on the brain & body to keep us from experiencing the bodily trauma of surgery.
Reason two: Knowledge is power... I'm a little bit of a control freak & not knowing how things work or what they're going to do scares me. It's intimidating as hell, but I've told my surgeon advance that I'm a bit anxious & he's been supportive, so... I trust that I'm in good hands. Importantly, hands that won't get mad at me for being antsy or freaked out, lol.
It's ultimately your body, your family, & your decision. But if that surgery would make you feel better about yourself & bring you joy? It's an idea worth keeping on the table.

you know what would ease my anxiety before my surgery.... not calling everything a procedure, and stating flatly, no matter what you are going home that day. Also, stating if I cannot urinate I will be sent home with a catheter and I can remove it myself...... Or if I have problems, just go to the ER. You know, the one with the 18 hour wait time. Maybe if you treat us like human being again and not like slabs of meat at a butchers, I'd feel less stressed.
