  • The Stickler is a device for splitting wood, attached to the rear wheel of a vehicle, basically a huge screw. Usually any huge screws around me, I don't particularly view as an advantage, but here there is a huge mechanical advantage.

    We used one of these 40 years ago to split wood. It worked great on my dad's old ford pickup. Used it for a lot of years and a bunch of firewood. Thanks for the memories.

    Congratulations. You have the best and safest log splitter made. I have been around these for over 40 years. And have never seen anyone get hurt at all, unlike when axes, mauls, wedges and hydraulic cylinders were used.

      I agree! I've seen chunks come flying out of those other kinds. People who don't have hardwoods with lots of knots don't get it. Pine can commonly be split with a table knife! LOL!

    I uploaded this 6 years ago and was shocked to find it had over 70,000 views! Some of the comments are pretty interesting. Wood is not a consistent material, I've seen several splitters that say they make splitting easy which would not begin to work on the type of wood that grows around here. Yes you can split many types of wood easily with an axe. That's what I use for the easy stuff. But when you have green ash, or scrub oak like we have around here, it could easily take a half hour with your axe buried and immovable. When you have the tough stuff, a hydraulic splitter can be quite dangerous. Unless you have the proper guards, (which many do not) when splitting the tough stuff, if you hit a knot or a twisted grain I've seen the wood chunk or pieces come flying out at high velocity! Scared the crap out of me. That's why I went back to the Stickler. For the easy stuff, yes use an ax, I do, but I don't have much of the easy stuff. For the type of wood we have here, nothing beats the stickler. Someone made the comment saying it was stupid to use gas to split wood. Obviously I disagree. My old Toyota can run all afternoon on less than a gallon of gas, (it is idling) it splits wood that is about impossible to split by hand. Unless it's 20 below or colder, then the ax is much more fun! The ones that are impossible at more comfortable temperatures fly apart!!

    You're good at making videos. Awesome commentary, camera angles, lighting, etc. I take this stuff seriously and you've got what it takes. SUBBED. Keep up the good work.
    PS - I just bought a Stickler for $50 about 20 minutes ago, I'm thinking about connecting it to a PTO shaft on my tractor and making a special bracket below it... provided the PTO rotation matches the thread pitch.
    Makes me wish it wasn't -20 and pitch black outside right now. I want to be out there smashing logs apart instead of watching you do it on here. LOL :P

    My guess is that there are FAR more hydraulic log splitting accidents due to the fact that there are far more hydraulic log splitter users. Percentage of accidents per log splitter would be interesting.
    That being said, I have a hydraulic log splitter and I think the cone splitter is brilliant as one gets multiple uses out of a machine: transportation and log splitting. And its very inexpensive. Can't drive your hydraulic log splitter to the grocery store.

      Roger Nelson One of the advantages of a rusted out truck is nothing comes out the end. It all leaks out before it gets there! Plus the other side would be a real pain, every time you needed to start or stop, or give it some more gas, you would have to walk all the way around. No, I like it much better on the driver side.

    I'll take 4 of these, please. I'll mount one on the end of each axle with the wheels left on and go drive around New York City.

      Federico Alinovi I use an axe too for the easy stuff. But a lot of the Oak and Ash we have to burn around here, you are not going to split with an axe! When it's 20 or 30 below, then you can split them, and it's actually pretty fun with an axe. But at comfortable temperatures, you will be work a long time to split one piece.

      I've never used it on anything other than a vehicle with an automatic. Some of the comments it's obvious they have never tried to split the kind of knotty hardwood see have around here, and don't understand the difference.

    I got one of these a few years back for 200.00 and have always split everything I have thrown at it. I love mine and would replace it if something happened to it.

    lol hillbilly wood splitter is right! This made me laugh so many times throughout the video. This is not very safe on many different accounts not to mention instead of breaking a axe handle and being out a few bucks your risking a vehicle and lots more money, Maybe this is one of those things you have to see and try to appreciate but for now ill stick with a hydraulic log splitter or a maul!

    • @artrudetv
      @artrudetv  4 роки тому +1

      Contrary it's far safer around here. An ax will not split the knotty oak and ash we have around here unless it's 30 below and then it's kind of fun. Hydraulic splitters send chunks out at high velocity, very unsafe. This calmly works it's way through, and is far safer, unless you are a complete idiot and put yourself into the machine, but that would be fairly difficult. And if you are a complete idiot, then let natural selection work. I love my old stickler. Had one for over 40 years now.

    I made one in high school. It worked....okay sorta. It wasn't good for stringy wood. The worst part is if you get a glove caught or pants etc. you cant stop it like you can a hydraulic.

    @581u812 I don't know where you would buy one today. I think the company is out of business, but don't know for sure. (I was wrong, just googled it, and found out they are still around.) I split anything up to about 1.5 ft. in diameter.

  • @99cachorro

    @hessians02 It's obvious you have never used one of these. Actually, there are many more accidents with hydraulic splitters on record. There a much cheaper as well.

    How is it holding up? Do these wear out?

    • @artrudetv
      @artrudetv  9 років тому +1

      I really don't know how you could wear it out, unless it was abused in some way. The biggest problem is my truck sat for 4 years only used periodically, so I just had to replace the fuel pump, but now I am back in business. Sure missed it when it wasn't running.

    Won't work on vehicle with positraction as only one wheel has to turn. Make sure log hits against the ground. NEVER attempt to hold log & NO ONE should stand to the left or the right, of the screw or front or back of vehicle. A thrown log will kill you, also keep vehicle door closed unless you don't mind a log flying through it. Should have a kill switch you can kill engine from the screw if anything goes wrong. Works in low at a decent idle, if you get it stuck, put in reverse and back it out

    • @derrickgraybill2097
      @derrickgraybill2097 6 років тому

      If you had posi you could just make sure the other wheel is also off the ground

  • @artrudetv
    @artrudetv  11 років тому

    No, the first step was taking off the wheel, so you have to put the wheel back on.

    Your engine rpm is way too low. My truck stopped on a huge knot one time when I was splitting with a Stickler and the rear end lifted up like I was power braking it.

    I`d do much better using my chainsaw, sawbuck and maul. In several weekends of easy work and good exercise, I could put up a winter`s firewood supply. Your truck is an automatic, that in itself slows down things. Good concept and good demo, though. These things have been around forever. Just the wrong application.

    ONLY an American could burn stupid ammounts of gasoline to cut wood for his fire. lmao

  • @artrude8436
    @artrude8436 11 років тому +1

    If you start it in the end there is nothing to stop the log from turning. An earlier comment about using an axe is fine when it's easy to split or small. If the wood is in large pieces or has lots of branches which means knots, they are almost impossible to do with an axe. The axe works well at cold temperatures. At 20 below or colder the wood almost flies apart. The big advantage of the stickler is the ability to split wood that would otherwise go to waste.

    The same is true of chain saws, tractors, basically any powerful took that does a difficult job. In my opinion this is much safer and more effective than hydraulic ram type splitters.

  • @artrude8436

    Actually the Toyota pickup is quite efficient. I only use a gallon or at the most 2 per year, and I split a lot of wood.
