I started to change my swing two summers ago. I changed to a strong grip, tried to get my hips moving forward & hit some duck hooks for the first time ever as I was a habitual slicer. The slice was gone & then the pulls started. I kept thinking it was because I was aligned left & sometimes I was. But the shoulder move & the closed stance helped me do better. I think you are helping me on a path to remedying this problem.
Not ashamed to say this is my second (or even third) time watching this video.. was hitting pulls yesterday with my 52 and I got frustrated. This video gives me confidence and I'm going back to the garage sim to practice :) Thanks Eric for all these tricks.
Good contents. I am facing this problem for years and never see any pro addressing this issue purposely before. The way you pick it up shows real understanding of the average player problem and your attention to small details. Well done!
My pull has been caused by my right shoulder out & possibly level shoulders at address. By pulling my right shoulder back & lower than my left shoulder has really helped. Just 9 holes today & much better. Thanks for the advice.
I’m definitely going to try to look at my shoulder and my swing path. I really think I turn my shoulder too hard so maybe following your advice to move it back and in a bit will help keep me from over rotating
I like your there are no rules philosophy but if needed adjustments to use while finding one's way . Thanks for your continued hard work sharing your knowledge to all golfers. ⛳️
This is such a great video because you think this would be easy, it is, but it's not - alignment on the short stuff is crazy important when you are trying to go from shooting 80 to breaking Par - the up&down putt-range is everything and pulled or pushed chips kill being a scratch golfer. It also becomes even more complicated when you start standing closer to the ball, getting that shaft more vertical (drops the lie_angle) when you are hitting those 25-yard pitch shots with slightly open shoulders & feet - and then your ball pattern is right of the flag. For me, my learned compromise was to go back to 64-degree 'normal' lie angle on my wedges, from my previous 2-degree flat lie_angles, play the majority of my chips&pitches with a slice-spin checking-to-the-right into the flag from the left with an open feet & chest aiming left approach; but then also then have a very distinct, 'drawing' setup where you have to do everything in this video, feet tiniest bit closed, shoulders square to tiny closed, start ball slightly right or target line and play the feeling of that draw-spin check. I think having both setups, as opposed to a square straight setup, at least for me, is the better way - but this fantastic video highlights perfectly what I saw myself happen.
As always sound advice made simple. I would caveat the final drill with the club pointing towards the right hand side of the green. The drill is intended to move the path to the right - if it works too well and you end with the swing going right you are going to promote an avalanche of the shanks
Sounds like you need to LOWER your DYNAMIC loft (more shaft lean) I would need to see to say for sure. Come see me in person or online at www.cogornogolf.com send your videos in you need more of the LOW feels These are for less than full but same principles. Make sure your face is closed enough and need more shaft lean ua-cam.com/video/ZT-6tspagow/v-deo.html
I found that I pull with the short irons because the swing is a bit shorter, but you rotate and release like I've made full backswing. Path and face are then pointed left. Cure is to make sure I make a full shoulder turn, and if I want to shorten the swing, do it with the arm swing.
Hey so this video makes sense to me if you have an over the top swing but i typically swing 2-4 in to out. If im getting hot pulls with short irons still is that just all in the clubface control, maybe releasing the club too early? I tend to hit pushes/push draws with my longer clubs and hardly ever hook them too much.
Hey Caleb yeah for you if paths in to out and hitting pulls with shorter clubs thats likely early release/flip and or too much face rotation through the ball
Thanks for the reply here yeah I’ve always been a bit of an early releaser so this would make sense to me. Is it typical for this problem to be worse with wedges than with longer clubs up to driver?
Eric Great teaching video as always. FYI, I have to say that the recreational golfers in the background in some of your videos are distracting. Thank you
Eric, how would u feel about closing the shoulders to the target line while chipping from 30 yards or so? Its the only way i can get my chips on line. Otherwise i pull them.
Love the great swing and fundamentals on show added to the use of alignment aids. Then behind it’s like Halloween swings, made me chuckle. Get that business card distributed at the entrance 😂🏌🏻♂️
I tend to do this on less than full wedge shots bc I come out of posture due to the shortened swing. I try to maintain that “sideways feeling” of right ear over the ball through impact
Eric, when I watch the guys on tv hit full wedges, it looks like they are always standing open and swinging on an out to in path. I am familiar with the concept of D plane so I understand why these shots go straight. It almost seems like there are 2 ways to hit these shots (square with a neutral path and open with an out to in path). If so, what are the pros and cons of each and why do most of the top pros seem to choose the latter method?
I've noticed this too. I had a problem not with pulling my wedges but with hooking the wedges. I found that if I concentrated on taking the club back a bit more on the outside and having an out to in path it solved the problem. I think it has something to do with minimizing spin.
My question is: If I hit my 54 90-100yds, shouldn't I expect that a half shot should 45-50yds? Where does the 8-90yd 'half' wedge come from? Btw, enjoy your instruction method(s). Feels and exaggerations broken down from technical aspects of swings are something I use in baseball/softball hitting instruction. Thanks.
Hey Richard! I would put in a wedge system like this ua-cam.com/video/6w-b7AKoFRQ/v-deo.html Even with short irons as well ua-cam.com/video/NPnTQKx2KFo/v-deo.html
Shot a -1 under par 71 today (34/37). No bogeys until the 18th hole. 2 birdies and 15 pars through 17 holes. Hit a gap wedge on 18th hole from 100 yards for my approach. Drew it left 20+ feet of the hole with a wicked left to right break from pin high. 3 putted. I wanted a 69. I should have given myself a closer birdie putt for 69. This is why I am here to find out why I am drawing my wedges. Some days I don't. What makes me do it some days????? Is it my grip? Is it my ball position in my stance? Is it my hands (low or high), heel of club up or is the toe up? or is it the distance I am standing from the ball (too far or too close)? Am I open or closed in my stance? Is my backswing too flat or upright? Are my hands behind the ball at address when I should have more of a forward press?
Hey Gwen! A closed stance helps us to have the club path more from in to out...but it would only be a HOOK if the club face angle was TOO CLOSED relative to that in to out path. Hope this helps!
just for your daily smile.....freeze video at 1:53 and enjoy the golfers on the range. your welcome.

Really solid instruction here Eric. Great progression through solving the issue
Thanks Joshua!
I'd like to see a video where Eric gives quick lessons to the people behind him. Some of them look incredibly frustrated.
Frustrated? They must be golfers lol

I needed this in May as I was pulling my 9i and wedges all summer. Shot tracer would have emphasized the results.
Hope it helps Rick!👊
Any tips and instructions on how to hit full gap, sand and lob wedges. I have a tendency to hit them to high and 10-20 yards short of target

You got it!
Eric, how would u feel about closing the shoulders to the target line while chipping from 30 yards or so? Its the only way i can get my chips on line. Otherwise i pull them.
Perfectly fine.....so long as it works :)
Eric, would more right side bend through impact also be helpful to reduce pulls?
All else equal---yes!
ua-cam.com/video/CEsxQyxMM_w/v-deo.html
This also would apply to irons ? I hit a lot of these pulls ending up in left bunkers
Yep!
Love the great swing and fundamentals on show added to the use of alignment aids. Then behind it’s like Halloween swings, made me chuckle. Get that business card distributed at the entrance 😂🏌🏻♂️
:)
Check lie angles .
Even a slightly upright wedge sends it left and most clubs are too upright.
Fo sho

I like that!

@@CogornoGolf "head on the wall" also!
Do you aim the clubhead towards the target, or towards the right side of the green (parallel to the club on the ground)?
There is money to be made with the dudes behind you Eric!
In this example you would aim the club face roughly where you want the ball to start

Hey Dave! Yeah thats fair.
Either can work. No huge pros or cons.
I see both ends of the spectrum.
I've noticed this too. I had a problem not with pulling my wedges but with hooking the wedges. I found that if I concentrated on taking the club back a bit more on the outside and having an out to in path it solved the problem. I think it has something to do with minimizing spin.
I wish I could win a week with Eric - to learn, hang out and play golf. He coaches golf like I coached soccer - love it.
Would be fun :)

great video
Thank you!
Super vid! ❤
Thanks!!
Shoulder too much forward is my worry. Uneasy to fix Indeed.
for sure....everything will need to feel exaggerated in the beginning of a change!
I thought a closed stance promotes a hook?
Hey Gwen!
A closed stance helps us to have the club path more from in to out...but it would only be a HOOK if the club face angle was TOO CLOSED relative to that in to out path.
Hope this helps!
Nothing new for me here which means I've been watching you too much 🙂👍
:) Appreciate you watching Kevin!
Eric, I think the boy behind you in the jeans and pink top could do with some lessons from you.
EVERYONE could do with some lessons (me too) :)
Great content. That poor guy hitting balls behind you needs you in the worst way.
Thanks Fred!
You do as well Fred, which is why you’re here listening to E…
Can a guy get a leaf blower on the giant range mat? We're trying to make a youtube vid herrreeee!!!
Lol
Eric I swear you have a spycam watching me...
:)
My problem, if I can just remember when that 50 yd pops up again...
:)
Great video
Thanks!!
