The adventure continues.
Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Be gentle on yourself Barry, take time to heal your body and mind for you have been through a great ordeal. Rest well. ✨💫🫡
He’s made of iron. He’ll be just fine ❤
Keep going mate - you have achieved so much, shown so much courage and determination- please don’t give up - boldness be my friend!!!
Regards Charlie
You've accomplished an incredible feat. Most of us couldn't even imagine doing what you've done. Take a well deserved rest.
The man is on full-time vacation
Dearest Barry, I am a 73 year old retired female who tried solo life in the Wind River Mountains. Winters won the battle. My body has worked like a man my whole life. Now my body says it's tired and ready for an easy life.
Your videos will be just as wonderful in an easier and safer life.
Sleep and rest.
Don’t stop sailing , just have a break, take it slow for a while, offer your help to the fisherman; it’s not direct your fault; everybody is responsible for his own acts. A last minute risk analyse is neccesary but in a rush forgotten. Like the way you filmed a storm, a little few vlogs let it really see how difficult it is to manage boat and sailor ! Keep on going and keep the spirit ! Thx for the channel and enjoy australia 😊
add----long rest.
You are an amazing sailor. The only criticism I would offer is, get the dang engine replaced. It would be expensive but not worth your life. Fair winds!
I hope you continue. You brought me a lot of happiness during the lockdown, it was an inspiration every episode. Thank you!
👍🏼 so, so true kimlog7476. Barry your question can only be decided by yourself. If you do continue, we'll follow. ☮️ ❤
Agree 100% - so much joy watching your videos. I hope you continue but would understand if not - the routes around Africa don't seem to have any low-stress options.
You should stay in the Indonesian waters for a looooong time after this, bobbing around and enjoy life
I can’t believe anyone would post second guessing comments after seeing what you went through. Some people just aren’t content with simply experiencing something. They have to insert themselves in everything. I am just glad you are safe.
Go over the bastard engine, replace all fuel lines, fuel filters etc. Always keep an eye on diesel bug. At least you can fix a very simple engine.
I love the fact that random people help you out. It must be so helpful, making your journey so much easier. Love the fact you’re in Oz 🇬🇧 🇦🇺
Bigger boat, a likeminded female companion and yer away, continue the adventure. An extra set of hands may be what you need.
Never thought your journey was anything other than drop dead serious. It's your spirit in overcoming every obstacle that comes your way that is the magic!
Glad you are safe and sound in Australia! A dream come true!
There is another way to look at things Barry. Without all your experience and skill , this day would have come many years ago. Many less skilled sailors would have given up or perished long ago. So when you feel like giving up, remember the amazing places you have been, the people you have met, and the adventures still to be had. I say this because so many of us who follow your channel, wish we could do what you are doing but we do not have your courage. Kia Kaha Barry.
Please continue on your journey. You are an inspiration!
Wishing you all the best, Barry. No matter what you decide to do from here on. 💗
I love your spirit SeaDog! An experience like that would shake anyone. Get some rest and make a decision with a CLEAR mind.
No Need to Defend your actions and assistance as you are spot on! As a war veteran working 24/7 the deprivation of adequate sleep is a killer as I learned in Vietnam in USN . Thumbs Up BRAVO ZULU (WELL DONE)! I Salute YOU
Seems like Im your older brother. I too play the harp, and have sailed the great lakes(Canada) for many a year. Thing about bad bad weather for me was I never thought about being a hero but only survival. After following you for this many episodes I donated to your rescue unit and are a patreon now. You are a hero to me. Fair winds and following seas.
Glad you are okay. How about sailing around Australia, that would be interesting. Keep it closer to shore.
Barry give yourself time to recover and regroup...when I hadn't seen your regular update I worried and prayed for your safety...so very happy to see you and know all is well❤❤
Barry, I used to work helicopter rescue/medical. Its what people train for and enjoy. Your rescue was not something like "we depended on a water maker and ran out of water" etc. Keep going.
Make sure you visit the rum distillery
This video began with such sadness...you definitely needed a hug!
You're a hero in our eyes and will be if you you continue your journey or step down. Relax, recover and enjoy the result of all your travels, skills and determination.
Barry and shaddy ♾️❕❕
Barry glad you made it. Enjoy your time in AU. Time for R?R
Barry I've been following you since UK. I don't know how old you are but I'm 73. All the best if you can continue. You've done way more than most folks. Take a break if you feel like and everyone else can sod off. Cheers mate
Stay safe, stay healthy but most important stay adventurous and enjoy life
Welcome on Country, as the owners would say. 'Course we do Fish & Chips, don't forget who sent us here!
sell her and fly home to chill. Thank you for years of entertaining us. We were nearly neighbours when you bought Shaddy in Alvor, living on our 41 ft sailboat in Albufeira marina. Best wishes
After what you and your vessel have been through it takes time to recover and put things in perspective. One can be overwhelmed with all the work that must be done. "The phrase "Rearranging deck chairs on the deck of the Titanic" comes to mind but sometimes you just have to get some simple order to things in order to then tackle bigger tasks. You know this. You have done it before. Don't let your physical exhaustion make decisions for you. Recover fully. Put White Shadow back to rights then consider what's next.
Fuel line!❤
catchup with Brupeg while you're there
Anyone who has been out there will agree you absolutely did the right thing to call them out.
Fair winds skipper
Welcome to Aussie Barry the home of 5m+ White pointer sharks, crocks, king brown, red belly black, death adders, copper heads and many more snakes, redback, trapdoor spiders, cane toads, bats and much more lol not all is bad, the beer birds & BBQ's are to die for enjoy 👍🧜♀👣🍻🥘🐊
This is Australia Barry everything will try to kill you in the water and on land including the weather, regardless of your ordeal you made it safe and sound mate and thats really all that matters , get plenty of rest for the next adventure and dont forget Bundaberg is home to the famous " Bundaberg Rum "cheers and fair winds!!
Jesus I'm sick of Aussies talking shit like this. Its embarrassing. Hang your hat on something better...
Get some rest, you have been through a tough week. Things will look better in a few days.
Nice video
Keep going mate, you survived 10 years in Plymouth rescuing others. Good luck.
That engine snag was unfortunate, but congrats Barry, back in business and on Aussieland
Awesome u found the disconnect on fuel line !!! Meaning an "extra pint" plus no $100 per hour marine mechanics.... Giggles 😁
Life is more important than adventure you can always adventure didn't you as long as you're alive but without life It's over love your shows and the adventure you should careful I think of yourself your friend the demon Arizona🎉
Holy Mac! Queensland looks dull as cardboard.
Glad you're safe.
You don’t need to justify yourself Barry, most of these comments will be from sofa warriors. Inspirational stuff you put out there, have watched you from the start, good on you!
I guess we need to do a GoFundMe to get you a real motor for once in your life
I 2nd this
As 1 of your fellow viewers said, give yourself some time to recover. Some shore leave is in order to get your mind right.
And as I understand the Aussie phrase is used often... Good on ya. Stay safe and enjoy your time in Roo Land.
The rain! God sent you a portable boat wash 😁😁
Dear Barry, If you did what people think one should, we wouldn’t be watching you….
Your (self) reflection on the aspects of getting out there and the endangerment of other people shows you deeply care about others. As a retired firefighter I know that rescue personnel are not only angels, they love what they’re doing, doing something meaningful, the rush, the adrenaline. Guess you’ve experienced that too. Of course they want to go home safely, but one knows there is some risk.
For the fisherman unfortunately breaking his arm, he is a real hero. Hope he has a good and complete recovery and in retrospect for him something good comes from a bad thing.
Barry Hi, Love your channel. About your dilemma after the rescue, you know as an Lifeboatman they, as you did, join to help those in peril on the sea. I was LOM in West Wales and also a ‘yachtie’ we all as seafarers would help a fellow mariners in their hour of need and that’s what the fisherman did, you would have done the same I’m sure.
Don’t end it there Barry, keep your dream alive, you will get the opportunity to pay it forward, Good luck and fair winds shipmate.
Well Barry I would hope if I were in the same predicament to do as good as you did getting safe into the harbor is the most important thing here's to the folks that helped you get there, good job
The circumnavigation of the globe is doing well good man, doing well indeed.
I wish you and Windhippy combined on one slightly larger boat. You have a nice vibe, counterpoint and would presumably both be safer. I loved your genius moment with the fuel line.
That sweet perkins sound is like angels singing haha. Great find.. poor service from the marina. Especially a Mariner in need
Hi Barry. You need to take a good rest. Put the boat back to rights. It’s not a race. It’s not just the storm you are recovering from, it’s the amount of years you have been at sea. Well aware you have your land breaks, but your mind needs to rest. Stay with it my friend, the dream is still alive.
I’ve been watching your channel for 4 years. Probably not as long as others, but your video gives me that adventure joy that all us men used to have hundreds of years ago.
So glad your motor was OK and you got that damn rope off the bottom…then onto the Kangaroos and you cracked me up adding f the spring sound to their hops lol lol lol lol stay safe Mate (down under term)
Love your videos Barry. Live your life your way, and avoid listening to the armchair experts. You are well qualified in life and the sea to make the right decision about your future adventures. Enjoy Australia!
Barry, it’s the truly difficult times in life that makes you better appreciate the other days, whether it’s just a lazy day hanging out or one of the best days of your life. Keep after it mate. You have managed a feat few will ever come close to achieving.
Barry, something to remember for your own peace of mind is all those that came to your assistance are just like you,if the tables were turned, you would be there trying your best to help, take a well earned break, heal your bruises and then make your decisions from there
Stay positive Barry you’ve inspired me and others to start, take a break get fit and keep going.
lol that weather was mental and you saying going to pub i would have lol
Reggie go and get i nto trouble doing the icw and have a good foodie time
Dont give up, you have plenty of followers that love your videos.
Sail On & Fair Winds !
They do make a weird noise when they jump, don't they.
Yet another great video Barry. As for going on or calling it quits, I would wager that you might regret it later if you quit. No matter what you decide I'm on your side. And that's one old fart to another.
Glad you made it back ok Barry. Might be the time now to sort out the engine bay and get it into proper ship shape order. Replace the fuel lines, clean the fuel tank etc. Dont leave it to the last minute. At least then you can get her out and do the bottom etc. Enjoy Australia M8. ATB regards from the UK
Take your time and rest, where to next? You seemed to be very happy island hopping, maybe just do that. Get your island house & keep the boat. ❤
Sorry Barry for your trials and tribulations. Take a break and rest up. You sure are one hearty soul. I like your humor😂 have watched you from the beginning and you have touched my heart and soul. I wish Australia could developed more of their inner land. Thanks so much you trustee Seafarer and catch you the next time❤❤❤
Brilllllliant Barry - you have a loving family around the world 🌎 💙 thanks for sharing ⛵️ 👍
Watched the last video and I am SO glad you survived.I have watched from the beginning and pray for your safety.Hope you will decide yo move forward with thr journey.
Fairwinds &safe travels
Barry you are a real hero. Your honesty in admiting that your were really, really scared is admirable. Congratulations. Take your time, travel inland and then decide your future steps with a clear calm mind. Cheers❤
Those that criticise obviously know very little of accomplishing a longsea passage. You are in the elite club of solo sailors Barry ⛵🏴☠️ thank you for every second of video you upload and the hours and hours behind your work in editing. Keep going with this amazing life you live so bravely ❤
Yeah I’ll criticise he’s had engine in the past should have fixed before he left New Zealand no storm sails if he had them should have been deployed be for the storm if he didn’t have then should not have been at sea
We love you, let your heart make that decision if your going to keep going , we will all support you if you do , cheers mate ! From your friends in Canada 🇨🇦.
Now there’s a LEGEND!!
😊don’t let things get you down …….just think how far you have come 👍……your the only UA-cam that i follow now no chance of you getting pregnant 🤣 love you Barry ❤
Barry if you've accomplished all the sailing goals you've set for yourself, then hold your head up high if you choose to walk away. It's just the start of a new chapter. If on the other hand, you still have goals to reach, then press on. It's been a great adventure and you've accomplished much, so don't leave with any regrets. Finish on your own terms. I would personally love to see you sail Shadow back to the UK.
I really love watching your adventures Barry ! I spent 20 years at sea 1000nm South of NZ, all around NZ - Whitsundays/Hamilton Island and the Solomon Islands I broke my neck surfing 2015 and watching your awesome adventures, you have given me hope that by some miracle maybe I could go back Sea again, but until that happens I am watching you and so stoked from New Zealand . I totally get how the film or photos never capture the true size and power of the wind and heavy seas, Thank you for the huge effort you put in. I cant do much and was getting really board watching boring movies but you have given me something no other movies ever could and 'REAL RAW HEARTY' great seamanship and resilience! Sail on Barry ! THANK YOU!!!💯👍👍👍🤸♂🏄♂🐬🐬🐬(I am 67)
Thanks for the nice words David.
Before I started watching you I wanted to learn to sail and sail around the world. Now I think a plane to wonderful spots is better.
I would say you have had plenty of drama with your old Perkins engine in the past, probably you need to take heed now and replace it. Sailing should be stress free.
Wow, 'BOAT DOWN UNDER'! What an incredible journey you've been on, facing challenges head-on and never giving up. Your determination is truly inspiring. It's great to see you finally safe and sound in Australia, a dream come true! Take some well-deserved rest and recharge your batteries. Remember to be gentle on yourself, both physically and mentally. You've brought so much happiness to others, especially during the lockdown. Thank you for sharing your amazing adventure with us. Keep sailing and exploring, Barry! ✨🌊⛵️
"It is not all plain sailing". Neither is life. That said you are braver than me and that seems a saying made for you!
A few years ago, I was sailing from the Canary Islands when we were caught in a storm. I became so seasick that I couldn't even stand up. I had never been so ill in my life. If I had been alone, I would never have been able to steer the boat by myself. I was sick for days and began to wonder if I should ever return to sailing. It took me a couple of years to recover and go back to sea.
Sometimes, these experiences take time to heal from. I know.
STOP MATE !!!
Do not despair !!!
You have achieved an absolutely amazing achievement that many other people can only dream of, because they are stuck in the circle of life.
NEVER DOUBT who you are and what you have done, because what you have done without knowing, is show what thousands of people would have done if they were even the smallest bit possible.....
They are WITH YOU EVERY DAY, and NEVER forget them...
WE ARE THERE WITH YOU, and wait for your videos about you doing what we would love to do.
So be strong, of good courage, AND DO WHAT YOU SAID TO YOURSELF YOU WOULD DO.
We are beside you, keep those vids flowing, and just be in love with the sea and the sky, like we are.
And Barry, remember who you are.
A true yachtsman on your world cruise, that we al are watching with great admiration for your spirit for real life....
Be still, and know that the Creator of the 7 seas is with you, to show everyone His beauty...
So glad you are OK time to look after your self first.
Barry ..... I thank GOD that you are safe. We need to get that engine fixed, yea ?!
Soooo excited for another video = )
Hey Barry if that derelict is abandoned why can’t you just acquire the mast steps ? Going to be probably demolished. Just a thought 😊 but really glad to say again that I am so happy that you made it!! Glad that you’re still with us 😏👍🙏
When it's time to end your adventure, you and only will know. The memories and pleasure you have created for yourself and many of us will last a life. God bless you, Barry.
Love you Barry....!
@6:34 you could maybe join 'free range living' and help start an old sailors commune. making, growing cooking all your own food :-) hope you feel better soon.
Glad to see your safe. Some stupid comments people obviously didn't watch the whole thing. I diagnosed the engine fault as fuel by the way it was hunting. But would never have thought it was just a broken fuel pipe. As for bad weather, one can get caught out on a day sail along the south coast (uk) . You've got halfway around blues. You have to carry on Because as a viewer I don't want to be left in OZ
Shaddy, like most boats is stronger than himan flesh and too boats are usually stronger than our spirit when we've tired. No shame. No loss. You get a good rest and you'll be looking to cast off again. Be well. Enjoy your time there. Summer, i believe, eh? Well, it snowed here today so ..there's that. Looking forward to your next video.
A Continent? well who would have guessed?
Always great to hear your voice, you are a great narrator. So you are at crossroads as to what to do next with your sailing adventures? One tip: follow your heart and your gut feeling. I am very grateful for all the many many truly beautiful episodes you made for us so far, so really, a BIG thank you, Barry! ❤👍
The glass is always half full Barry. (Hopefully with a good ale!). Whatever you do you will be living on your own terms. Book writing? You have so many stories to tell and do have the audience for it! Sail guide? Always more than meets the eye. Expand. If you happen to get back home do contact another vlogger named Roger Barnes. He is in charge of a renowned dinghy association now based in France. We love watching his adventures with local sailing raids in smaller craft (and pub hopping!) I think you two are kindred spirits! Cheers!
Cap'n Barry .. A fine adventure! .. You're secured to a sound berth for some well deserved, and long overdue, rejuvenation of the mind, refurbishing the equipment, and establishing the future destination heading .. You've had an amazing adventure that has brought you to this place and time .. a long cold drink with serious thought and sound decisions await you .. Cheers Mate!
You lost a few pounds Mr. Barry.
Take time to recharge and figure out your next adventure.
In all cases....my heart-felt appreciation for all that you've shared.
Sincerely, Michel from Canada
You made it through. That is all that is written in the book.
“Don’t go out in bad weather?” People do say the most ridiculous things! 😂
Watching the storm video was terrifying. Thanks be to God that you’re safe.
Love the moment when the engine started “ in your face Mr. Marina Manager”!
Nice to see you again!
It's amazing how many folks have no idea of how big the oceans are or how long it takes to cross them in a sale boat.
