Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Yep !!
That "I want to go home" was powerful. Hope you make it in Shaddy but if not you have to be happy.
Bless you and Shady, the look you gave about going home brought a tear. Have you thought about going home for a wee bit, if you can put your boat somewhere cheap? It may be you stay in the UK for 6 months, do some talks, raise some money, recharge, re-think.
I’m your age so I know how it feels when you get worn out, I can see it in you, man you look knackered. We’d all understand if you took a break, or even said, that’s it, you have achieved so much, touched so many people, have so many stories, gained so much knowledge on the water you won’t be left with nothing but treasures.
Fair winds and a good rum
I thought he looked a little thin but his legs looked healthy.I like your idea, fly home for a bit,do some talks and personal appearances. Maybe talk to some publishers to secure a book deal.I think he would get a real recharge to actually see in person some of his followers and fans.
@@boathousejoed1126 that would be great, also do a go fund me to fix the boat.
No. When he gets back to UK he will be shocked at how the country has changed UK is not his UK any longer. This will be very depressing once he realizes he no longer has a country. That is something he will have a hard time dealing with he will fall into depression and despair at what has been taken from him.
@@Islandwaterjet That's pretty true for everywhere and everybody. The decline is real and the democracy has been turned into a corporatocracy.
Thanks for another great video Barry 👏 … I understand your desire to come ‘home’, but it’s not a great place any more. I’d find a nice spot in the sunshine and just stay there if I were you 👍😉⛵️🍺🍕🎸🎤😊
uk is not even Europe anymore.. but his home is also where is heart is and his heart is the world. At least its just as big. What a great guy. Flying home definitely would be a good idea.
Hi is this you tex if it is this is Mark from Tom's yard in England I have been following you. Stay safe
Been with you since Episode #1. Charlie would be quite proud. Well done Mr Seadog! 🙏👍
Glad you made it safely to Indonesia Barry. Past the halfway point now- heading towards home. Long way to go yet.
Shadee getting some much-deserved love & Maintenace. Secret booze expedition - u don't say there, u old seadog? I'm in for that.
As others have said, put White Shadow on the hard somewhere and fly home for a few months. As much as it's my dream to sail the world, I know I'd have to come home (United States) for certain periods.
You've earned a break.
Wonderful peek at a different world. Thanks, Barry!
Put your boat on the hard for two months and fly home. You may find you want to live one of the wonderful places you have been, the world is changing.
I joined the 3,5 month Sail to Indonesia rally as crew on a 60 footer. We did not get to see all 17000 islands but what we did see has left an indelible memory on my soul. As long as your health holds out I would stay there and explore happily for the rest of my life. Clever nav light idea. Living the dream I would say.
Hi Barry, I am a longtime viewer and Army veteran (NZ). I mention that because I saw you wrapping up a wound on your hand. I spent roughly two years crawling around the Malaysian jungle on numerous exercises. I suffered all sorts of scratches etc and all I used was Betadine. You can get that just about anywhere nowadays
I advise getting a tube of the ointment as well as a bottle of the liquid. The object is to use the Beta dine to clean out anything that might cause an infection and leave the wound open to the air as much as possible. Protect it while you are working, but uncover it whenever you can to promote faster healing. I never had any infections off any nicks, minor cuts, mild burns or scratches. It is the first thing thing I put in my first aid kits.
All the best or ka kite

Thank you Barry great video as usual God speed
Barry and Lombok... a real treat of a vid... I really enjoy your narration of the local culture all the places you sail... Fair Winds...
My Favorite sailor!! Happy New Year
Thanks Barry! Great adventures you're taking us on!
Loved the scenery up the mountain
Sending love, Barry. Love watching your adventures. There will be a few more before home I’d hazard. ❤
Trailer lifts are fantastic! I trust them more than watching my boat hanging on straps. Hope you had a great Christmas and have a Wonderful New Year!!
Really enjoyed, I have been following you from the start. Thanks for posting
Happy New Year to you Barry. Thanks for another ride and the pleasure was ours. Be well.
As always funny Barry. You have a long and happy life ahead of you. I highly appreciate your choice of being alone in Shaddy.
Thank you for taking us along.
Brilllllliant Barry - thanks for sharing ⛵️ 👍 good editing
You are looking healthy and sounding healthy as well . Good stuff Barry.
What a beautiful place to moor your yacht. Thanks for sharing Barry, well done.
Lived in Indonesia for a number of years (Jakarta), and was a member of the Jakarta Offshore Sailing Club. Wonderful country, lovely people, and you’ve been in enough similar places to know how to just go with the local pace - enjoy!
Hi Barry. Looks like you had an ok Christmas. Lombok Island really does seem to be a place to hang around for a month or two. The people look very welcoming, and helpful. Time to get a bit of work done, not to much work though, you owe it to yourself to have a break. Hope you have a great New Year’s party, and speak again on the other side of New Year’s Eve. Stay safe.
That’s dedication for you. Just arrived in port after several nights not sleeping and you post a video!
What a pleasure to watch Barry,.🎉highlighted by your flowing happiness😊HAP HAP HAPPY ❤NEW YEAR Keep the good times Rock & Rolling.lovya😂
You live the dream, sir, and are envied by so many people 😊 maybe my next life will be more exciting. 😏
Looks like Philippines. American expat, been here 13 years and enjoy it.
Me too! I'm in Dumaguete.
I was in the Philippines for almost 4 years in Calasiao on Luzon. Met my wife there. We're back in the USA now.
On your navigation light project. I would drill a few small holes in the bottom of the plastic enclosure for moisture that forms in the inside of the enclosure to drain any condensation that may form. The other item is that where the top of the enclosure screws onto the cap (you base part) moisture will make its way down the threads and settle at the bottom of the enclosure. Maybe some painters tape to seal the part where they come together. Just a thought. Great video
And paint the red & green at the inside, not the outside. But guess you figured that one out already ;-)
Hi. So you finally are sailing home. Going to miss your adventures. Wish you a happy new year. Bet you will return to NZ after a freezing year or two, though. Best of winds to you Barry.
Barry I Enjoyed the adventure very much Be blessed and have a happy new year 🎈 Barry 🐻 from Thornton,Colorado
Hey Barry... yeah.. home... I've been feeling that from you for a bit... I thought at time you would land at some island and call it then, to live out your days on a tropical island.... but I can appreciate that you are... tired... You've been working hard for so many years ( let alone the beers) ...
Great channel. Love it.
That was Roti Canai mate … the best breakfast ever … a few different pronunciations and regional variations across SEA … but all just yummy 😋
50°! Only mad dogs and Englishmen. And Old Sea Dogs! Fair winds good fella.
Fantastic. That reminded me of trailer-hauling in Guatemala which i really liked as it put far less stress on the hulls. Hopefully you are getting your fill of Bami and Nasi Goering, chicken satsy and shrimp toast!😊. SV Zia
another great episode stay safe keep sailing
Great content as always. Stay safe and have a happy and healthy New Year.
Man Made Tech, When You Don't Have What You Need You Make It👍👍💯💯👏👏
Would love to see more frequently content and a lot longer episodes 😊 Maby then the UA-cam algorithm will do it's ting, and before you know it- you got yourself a brand new boate...
A good place to undertake major repairs is Langkawi in Malaysia. It has great facilities, good tradespeople, and is a duty-free port for anything you want to bring in. PS Cheap beer.
I bought a used car with that Hindu G-d in the glove box,I've kept it onboard! Seems like your Dad is keeping an eye
on you. Have a happy and safe New Year! Thanks for taking us all on your journey!
Yeah, if you're feeling it, time to head homeward bound Barry....great video :)
New respect: that haul out! How could you create content and not panic at the same time! Concerning temperature - thats insane. I don’t work below 9C or above 20C, Sod em. Anything between those ranges is coffee or beer time depending on the clock.
You don’t work above 20C? What do you do?
I’m in tropical Australia below 22C I’ve got a jumper on 😁
Home is the sailor. Thanks for this Barry.
Chendol drink with nasi goreng and chicken sate with some bami my fave basic indo food
Monkeys freak me out. I'm not a fan. I give them plenty of room and avoid getting anywhere near them.
Thanks for sharing.
Very wise !
People have the wrong impression of monkeys, they think they are all cute and funny but they really are just the opposite and can be nasty little beggars !
Best avoided if at all possible and certainly never offer them food !
That was my first thought, monkeys? I gotta get out of here!😂
What a powerfull episode. Stay safe and enjoy the holidays Barry. You will go home. 😊
Good To See You And Wishing You A Very Happy Happy New Year👍👍🎆🎆✨✨🎆🎆🎉🎉❤❤
Hi Barry I Have Never Seen A Boat Being Lifted Up, Amazing!
Thanks for the update, Barry! Safe sailing, buddy!
Nice video Barry, from Gladstone,Rob and Jan ,TAHLAI TIGER 😀😀😀😀
Great video as always cousin Barry. Liked the "Little Tina" dinghy! Love Malcolm and Eileen xx
I loved watching your video, Barry, it looks to be an interesting destination. When you mentioned about your Dad calling your sister "Tiny Tina" and parking your little boat beside it, perhaps that is another sign calling you home. I recall you mentioning in the video, you want to return home. Synchronicity? Enjoy your journey and let's hope it's not too big a job with working on your boat.
Finally, a positive episode! Thanks.
Excellent video as always, thanks for the peek!
Happy New Year Barry, and your faithful subscribers. Peace be with you.
Barry maybe you should put your boat on the hard and head back to the UK for some R&R. You've got a fan base now that would support you for your needed repair on Shady.
Splendid as always Barry. I'm still hoping you visit Mt Rinjani while on Lombok, the story behind it is so mindboggling in its sheer scale and effects it had on the whole planet.
Great Year 🎉 Happy new year 0:44
Looks like you enjoyed yourself! The statue you were brought to was Ganesh, or Ganesha, a Hindu God of the most high with a very interesting history. You should look it up! The young man wanted to bring you safe passage as he is a God of travel, and other things, but he also overcomes obstacles of any nature. He was a very kind young man and was respectful of your ‘being’ in bringing you there. What a fascinating place! Was that the Cowardly Lion someone was imitating?😂❤. Hmmm, flying monkeys in Indonesia? Maybe it is time for you to head home, Barry. 🤗👍 (but, I thought Shaddy was home)- well, you do you.
I don't comment a lot, but I watch a lot and have for years. I found you when you were in the Caribbean the first time. I bought and enjoy and share your song on bandcamp. Thank you for staying true to yourself on this journey. I'm looking forward to this "2nd half" and to seeing what you get up to after its all over. What guitars do you have with you at sea? Maybe one day I can buy you beer and pizza and listen to a story or two.
Well it looks like the day is coming when you return to England and sell the boat but hopefully not just yet !
Let's hope the trip home is nice steady sailing with fair winds in your favour Barry ! 🤞
Feels like just yesterday Barry had White Shadow on the hard.
It probably was!🤣
I have to say you sure do seem more comfortable on land these days, I’ve been with you since the beginning are even better on land, head home, and show us your country.
Beautiful people meet kindness a journey shared
Good to see you again Amigo!
Thank you Barry...
Hey, Barry!
Nice to see you again! 😎👍
That looks really fun
Great vid, thanx Seadog.
Cracking video Barry it reminds me of my home here in Thailand . Always something new to discover when travelling, take care and are Happy and healthy new year to you and family
6:32 One day you will try to sell White Shadow amongst all the dock queens "back home".
People will come to see and it doesn't matter how perfect the paint job, they will have a look and say "oh this it too much work to get ready for cruising" 😂 Then they will go buy a Oyster or an Amel and sit in it at the marina for 5 years making it "perfect".
Hey now, Amel are famous blue water boats.
@shanep5121 Yes, they are famous. My point exactly. Many inexperienced boat buyers are drawn to that. My point is the most experienced people often don't care about paint chips as much as less experienced people.
They usually make it perfect and by the time they are ready the equipment is outdated or their health declines and they end up selling the boat
@@GreatOutDoorWorldofMines I think you missed the REASON they are famous. That's like saying people are drawn to chocolate because it tastes good, but that's bad.
@@shanep5121Let me start by saying I have nothing against Amel and Oyster. But they are just as famous for being unique and expensive to fix and own. Famous for being chosen in the last 5 years by inexperienced boat buyers(Because they ARE famous, not WHY they are famous) who may, or may even not have blue water intentions. I have seen several of them anchored out far in the Mediterranean too deep draft to enter protection. Anchored for months while they work digital nomad and stressing about the double electric rig and all the systems falling apart. One young couple I know spent their life saving on one falling apart and can not afford to fix many of the Amel features and regrets not buying a charter design.
Which would be like never having tried chocolate and buying 50kg of Swiss White Chocolate all at once, and later realizing you actually like dark.
Further from digression though, my main point: Buyers often care too much about paint asthetics and small repairs. Which would be like finding a bar of chocolate and not eating it because the wrapper was slightly damaged. Logic states the chocolate is still good. Go look at Sailing Zingaro recent video where he describes the behavior of a potential buyer of his Oyster. Keep in mind James is an example of somebody who made a SOUND EXPERIENCED choice of an Oyster and used it for it's intended purpose which was make legs to windward in the Caribbean.
Dont rush to get back mate,
Good luck on fixing the boat Barry. Looking good out there. Greetings from Holland 👋
Good to see you in Lombok, even though it's noisy. Guess the beers taste better after all the trouble you went through to get it :-) And did I notice some... home sickness there? Wow... all these patches on Shaddy... By the time you're back in England, half of the original Shaddy will be eaten by the oceans! Tx for all your vids, mate, it means a lot for many of us here under the eternal grey skies in Europe. (Today in Brussels, it was the first day in 4 weeks that we had a little bit of sun!)
Yay another episode! Stay safe cap!
Those are good little radios. They're exceptional for DXing which is great for a sailor.
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
Through the unknown, remembered gate
When the last of earth left to discover
Is that which was the beginning;
At the source of the longest river
The voice of the hidden waterfall
And the children in the apple-tree
Not known, because not looked for
But heard, half-heard, in the stillness
Between two waves of the sea. ❤ 🙏
Love those nostalgic moments Tiny Tina we had one in our house too
Good going!
Top class as always Barry, have a great new year.
so what did they charge for a lift out ?
Thanks for another great video! I think I would have bought a fiberglass boat! At least you wouldn't have to be scrapping off rust! Also fiberglass is a lot easier and less expensive to repair!
Just my two cents, Barry!
Like they say...opinions are like arse holes, everybody's
got one! Lo😅😅 Stay safe from the east coast of Canada 🇨🇦!
Have you tried Por 15 to stop the rust ? First you treat it as you do and then paint with por 15 , then paint with something that matches . Works incredible to keep out the oxygen and that stops the rust .
Don’t be in a rush to get home Barry , it’s turned into a hell hole .
Stay out find somewhere else to settle down !
@@Islandwaterjet agreed , I’m the same , We came back in May from the states to see friends and family and it’s upsetting to see what’s happened.
It will be harder for Barry as it’s been yrs now ! It’s truly shocking .
I'll be honest Barry: the last time a strange man asked me to touch his elephant, it turned out much worse than it did for you here. Sorry, I''ll show myself out.
But seriously: great vid as always, buddy. Take care and keep up the good work.
Watching the end of the episode, I realized that I really miss the outtakes from this channel that use to be a regular thing every episode.
"I want to go home..." ... I get it, really I do, but at the halfway point?! Cheers and good luck!!
Nice life your living a dream😊time to sail home. I wonder how long it will take?
hey Barry AIS states you are in Cape Town ,,,,,That was fast buddy
HAPPY NEW YEAR MATE
Rob
NSW Australia
Thank you very much for another video. Would you choose a steel boat again? 🇸🇪😄😀💕
Happy New Year and the very best fro 2025, Berry.
Barry - 'the elephant guy' (as you called him) is Ganesh - god of fertility/abundance, I do believe
"Bazza wanna go HOME". Then once you've got that done, come back and settle in New Zealand, you know you'll be welcome here.
He cannot settle in NZ unless he has family there to sponsor him he has the wrong skin color there is no path to residency for our kind I know I have looked into this old white males like us are not welcome in NZ or AUS.
Brilliant
Cool haulout. Our place lifts withtravel lift then they place on a cradle that is on a lift trailer..then they set you down from trailer. How much for that haulout and launch in Lombok?
