I really like these podcasts! It is awesome to hear tasteless and day 9 together on this one. One suggestion that I would make is leaving timestamps of the general questions either in the description or the comments
speaking of drills, it was nice in SC2 Wings of Liberty that included some of those drills in the challenge modes, and then later the Starcraft Master blizzard-made custom maps; aside from the usual micro trainers
1:12:09 Actually, Sean did throw up at WCG when Nick started casting SC! Remember? I know because of Sons of Starcraft and Sean talking about it on a daily. He had had a bad sandwich. :)
I've always compared RTS most closely to rhythm games in nature. It was really interesting to hear you guys thinking about it in a similar way. I play musical instruments IRL and that "groove" that I get into playing music sometimes happens in Starcraft as well when I'm hitting all my macro fluidly over time. It's a very similar state of mind and feels like it comes from the same place

I think that Rocket League is probably one of the best examples of an e-sport that has embraced the concept of practice and drills like a traditional sport.
That's funny, I'm not a native English speaker and I learned a lot by listening to Day9 years ago, but to this day (and I'm an English teacher now) I've thought maynard was a verb that meant "to transfer", and not a name :)
actually worms armageddon had the exact concept of "drills" as a game mode implemented. For example one drill is throwing hand grenades across the map so you learn to hit the target and time the explosion. Another drill map could be hitting targets behind you with a bazooka using the wind to your advantage. You should definitely give worms armageddon a look if you want to explore drills as a game mode. Also it's actually a really good 1v1 game, with a much larger skill ceiling than one would suspect at first glance.
Worms had some unexpected depth to it last time i played. The two others i played with teamed up on me.. So i had to think beyond the simple aggression. I ended up setting girders on top of their units to buy time ++ I was getting to sudden death(water level rises) and they would struggle with that on top of me. Was good fun.
14:40 This whole exchange starting at this point is the reason I love dark souls and monster hunter more than the button-mashing spectacle fighters. It’s the pleasure of just doing the thing that is hard to physically do that somehow makes the game feel more enjoyable.
Rocket League has a ton of "Training" packs you can do of all sorts of lengths, variety of mechanical skills, shots, passes, blocks, etc. It's really solid.
Hey Tasteless this goes back a ways, but do know whatever happened to CholeraSC? He was one of my all time favorite casters and he just dropped off the map one day.
The last 45 minutes of this is absolutely gold. Tasteless could be an interviewer on J.R.E level to be honest. Day is a mega-level monk, a thought I had before he admitted it in this cast. Also it's ridiculous to think that being in piano recitals didn't have an effect on brood war / video game skills. Sure the self-makeover of APM Day9 had later during BW success days had a huge effect, probably a drowning effect, but young skills have a practically exponential effect on later training -- so I agree with Tasteless there, no matter how embarassing it might seem -- which makes the interview that much better. Don't forget to piss off your wives to help your brother. YOLO.
You guys discussed how in League of Legends, there's no player expectation in the sense like how you can imagine yourself as a commander in StarCraft. I'd argue that in League of Legends, the expectation is the fantasy that each particular hero promises. To use Azir as an example, he is a hero who summons little soldiers that he can attack with. The League devs discussed how making the player FEEL like they're this ruler who's commanding soldiers is a huge part of Azir's fantasy and that a lot of work went into ensuring that players got to feel that way regardless of whether they won or lost the match. And I think that's what games like League are all about. I do think that League of Legends does a much better job in terms of creating heroes with really strong themes and resonant fantasies compared to Dota. Whether it's "I wanna be a punch girl!" or "I wanna be a magical cat!", League does a really good job marrying character and gameplay. I feel that Dota's got good gameplay, but it doesn't have the resonant thematics to take it to another level.
I agree with most of your points here. But I believe Dota does just as good a job as League if not a little better at portraying that just due to how strong each heroes abilities are. They really feel unique and powerful. I mean Rubick can steal spells from other characters at any time. Engima has a huge channeled AoE stun that repositions enemies together, Juggernaut has an ultimate that will literally kill anyone in one shot if they are caught alone. Each and every hero feels truely unique and plays completely different. Sure league has a few abilities or heroes that make them feel unique, but almost every single role plays the exact same in League. Where as in dota each hero plays completely differently at every point in the game. And don't get me wrong I'm not hating on League. I played it from launch to Season 3 and spent over $1000 on the game. Just after switching to Dota, league just feels more mainstream and homogonized.
@@Ljrobison Dota has more unique abilities and mechanics than League of Legends, I agree. What I meant in my post was that League does a better job tying the mechanics and theme/flavour of the heroes together. To use an example, there's a psychopathic murderer named Jhin in League of Legends who has an obsession with the number four. His voice lines reference it, and it's in the character's visual design. His skills reflect this aspect of his audio and visuals: he does bonus damage every 4th attack; one of his abilities bounces 4 times, etc. Conversely, Dota heroes, while mechanically more varied, don't have much in the way of thematic. Naga Siren for instance just makes fish puns and says generic things like "my blade sings" and "the sea calls"; nothing that hints at more to the character that would make me want to learn more about them and play as them.
"Nothing in high school matters" I wish someone told me that back then, I'm really conscious of making mistakes and I take no risks back then because I would be so embarrassed if for example I would kiss a girl for the first time and I didn't know how to do it, I think I missed a lot because of that fear, if someone told me "this is just the tutorial, kid" it would've been way easier
You should not by shy even in professional life, so what someone will laugh at you if you do something stupid. What is normal anyway. Have fun with life and stop being scared, because some dick is point fingers at you. Fuck 'em. Trust me people will laugh at you even if you try to play safe. There are people who are experts in spotting that you hide something. Be yourself, admit your weak sides, show your strong ones and don't be shy. There is literally no advantage in being shy.
Plott 2, you DID throw up WCG 2005 before your match with Artosis.... And thus, it dawned on me that it is concerning I remember Sean's life better than he does.
Mechanics are the true soul of games. And I understand that games are a medium that can exist in almost any conceivable dimension. But my point is that just because a game can emulate a film, or adopt the trappings of a novel, does not make such a game better than the best films and novels. Everyone with reasonable knowledge of film or television or literature will agree that games have never achieved what the greatest works in those arenas have. This is actually not a condemnation of games, but rather an exultation of what games CAN do, that film and literature and painting etc cannot. Namely, the function of a game as a kind of machine (or toy). When you create a mechanically complex machine, the act of playing with such a machine is in-itself rewarding. Sure, the way the machine looks, or the narrative that explains how the machine operates can be compelling, but no one is playing Brood War because the Zerg storyline is so compelling, or because the way the sprites move on screen is more gratifying than anything else. The best games are the ones with the best mechanics. They are the toys or machines that we return to again and again because the act of play, of interaction, is completely unique to gaming and is, in fact, its greatest trait. Edit: Just to add to my point here a bit. I focus on competitive multiplayer games as the best example of what games can do because of a simple factor. AI has never sufficiently been designed to rival human creativity and competency at any multiplayer game. All single-player games are solved, at best they are mechanically difficult enough that a speedrunning community develops around them, at worst you get trash like Heavy Rain, in which the mechanics are essentially nonexistent.
I know it's boring to do ads, but it's also boring to listen to them. If you want people to not instinctively skip over them, have the dude your listeners are here for listening to the voice to do them, have them be done with some energy and if you get self aware humor in it'll make it even more likely that people wont skip it.
