I grow cycads and store excess pollen in the freezer. I put the pollen in aluminum foil and then put it into a freezer bag. I was also told to use a drying agent to remove excess moisture. I have stored pollen for more than one year and it still works. I have never stored cactus pollen but, I think it would be the same as cycad pollen.

Hello Anna. I put the pollen in the fridge and freezer. It lasts a couple of years easily. Great idea. You can also cross pollination with other mammillaria and get some awesome hybrids. Awesome video keep up the great videos sorry the cactus died.

Wow....what a shame one of the cactus rotted but it left you 2 seed pods luckily after your successful freeze pollination. Love your story though 😉. Good video 👍👍

This does certainly work... I store Pollen from cactus flowers for later use... I did this with 2 of my Astrophytums last summer in 2019... They always flower at different times so I used my refrigerated pollen and it worked. That was the first time trying this out... But I agree in storing pollen in freezer because it only lasts a short time stored in the fridge. Excellent video and it's great seeing someone else using the technique and it working... Oh and I always use scissors to cut the anthers/pollen it's so much easier😆
    Really good video. 🌵🌞🌵🌞👌

Oh, that is good to hear that somebody has tried it too and succeeded. I wish I knew about this years ago. I could have had seeds from my other cacti. LOL on the scissors ✂️. Yes, I learned that only in the process. I wasted so many pollen. 🤣

You just gave me a new idea to pollinate cacti! Thanks! If you are able to inspire people to grow cactus (myself), I'm more than sure you'll be able to grow those M.senilis easily, keep inspiring with us with your videos!

FANTASTIC video Ana :-D and a brilliant idea to store pollen in the fridge for when another one is blooming, I haven't tried this yet but will definitely give this a go in the future, so sorry you lost the senilis, but so wonderful that you have got seeds, thanks so much for sharing this wonderful video, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER to Las Vegas for a fantastic plant powered Sunday XXXX

Good work Ana!! I've heard of doing this with all kinds of plants, but this is a first seeing this done with cactus! Very cool!! Yes a great loss with the plant. But great save with the seeds!😄👍 I used to see these for sale when I lived in California. But I've not seen one for sale here ever. A very rare plant in this part of the country. So now you have many!! Yippee!👏😄👍 Keep experimenting !! I might try this with Euphorbias sometime!! Thanks for sharing!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks all the way to Las Vegas, happy growing!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌹🌴🌷🌿🌸🌻🍀🌺

Great video Ana. I tried putting pollen from one of my asterias in the fridge, but it wasn’t successful unfortunately, I’ll try and put some in the freezer next time. A shame about the rotted senilis, but it developed those pods/seeds pretty quickly, large seeds too. More of the ones you sent have germinated, at the moment I think it’s about a 60-70% success rate and more are germinating each day 😊 Thank you for sharing with us as always Ana, from Edith & myself, have a wonderful weekend 🌵☀️🌼🌺🌸🏜

It is great news that the seeds germinated. I was afraid that I might have collected them too soon as the fruit was still green. And wow, you are super fast Daz at sowing them right away. Just keep trying on the pollen, Daz. I actually recently tried it again with my Echinopsis inside the house (controlled environment) and it looks promising. 🤞

Very cool video, Anna! I enjoyed all your process. I'm sorry about the poor Mammillaria that died but at least you helped it in propagating itself 🥰. It's funny to think that in the future there's going to be lots of senilis in your garden (and in Cactimania's). Where they the same variety of senilis? I ask that because I see the spines colour different and that made me think that yours is the normal and the new one that died could be the senilis var. albiflora but the colour of the flowers is not white, so that's impossible. Maybe you have a hybrid? Thanks for sharing and have a nice day.😘🤗

Vanesa Suria they are the same except mine has been growing under strong sunlight. The new one was nursery grown in California where their temperature and sun is not as harsh. I got them both also from the same seller. The white senilis is something I’ve been looking for since I learned that there is one like that. Thanks Vanesa for watching! 🙂 Cheers from Las Vegas to Spain!

@@CactusCaffeine @Cactus Caffeine Oh, I see! 😃That's very curious, to see how they adapt to different sun exposure and climates. Thank you for the explanation. I'm also looking for the white one since I saw it on Pinterest...😁. Cheers from Spain to Las Vegas 🌵☕.

That is brilliant! I admire your skill and perseverance. How do you stop the flowers self-pollinating? Or does that not happen?

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  4 роки тому +1

I’ve tried self pollinating this for several years with no success. I conclude that this is not one of those self-fertile cactus. 🙂

    Wow!
I didn't know you could take it to this level Ana.
    Very cool.
So did you give the bees some vacation time😅😅
So to see the one rotted cactus.
I still didn't understand putting the pollen in the fridge for 10 days.
Does the cold temperature prevent something from happening?
Really enjoyed watching your knowledge on this.
Hope all is well with you and please stay safe!🌵☕🍺🌵

That's great you got fruits out of it at least. I'm guessing your friend is not in the US or shipping wouldn't be hard. I'm not sure it's the pot. I'm finding that M. senillis is prone to this kind of rot inside the body and leaves a shell. You have no clue until you touch it and it's light. This happened to my first one I got from Lowes. I lost it over the winter and didn't find out til Spring. I heard Fenanda lost hers too this way. I now have a second one that is doing well. But hey, I know you don't like those pots, feel free to send any my way. I'm always running short and love those types of square pots. I've stored pollen for Nepenthes. I bought a bunch of little centrifuge tubes a while back for this reason. Also had someone send me pollen once but it did not work unfortunately. I've got a rare nepenthes that's about to bloom and I may send out the pollen to some of my fave growers.

This senilis can be tricky. Its flowers are so beautiful that I would hate to lose my one and only cactus. That is until I grow these seeds. 😉 Haha, those plastic pots I don’t like them for cactus but I use them for my haworthias and aloes. I find that they are more demanding with water so plastic pots work better for them. 🙂
