One of the best R&B bands to come down the street.............and best movie I've seen. I remember my elder son giving me the DVD for my birthday. I had never heard of the Commitments but the movie blew me away and I will always remain forever grateful to my son for introducing me to these outstanding actors/actresses/musicians.
Still one of the most awesome Music-Movies, my favourite together with the Blues Brothers. And the brillant Glen Hansard only played a small part and now he sings at the funeral of Shane MacGowan…
*Andrew Strong is the real deal - loved the movie when it first come out, bought the tapes played them until they were chewed up by the tape player and now I've just found this little gem of a show!!*
I loved this movie when it came out - not because it was the greatest movie ever but it was very different than anything I had seen before. Went to a bar on lower Greenville in Dallas Texas right around this time and they had a band that played Mustang Sally that night - so much fun!!!!! RIP to my friend Amy Gloddo that went with me that night. Thanks for posting this!
70 years old and I can honestly say it one of the BEST movies of music ever. Used to watch it with my kids. Proud to say they knew the music because I raised them on it and rock & roll. I still listen to that music all the time. By the way, I was born and raised in “Motown” (Detroit). So glad I was young during the times all of the greats were making the best “Soul” and “Rock & Roll”!!
When The Commitments came out, Alan Parker stated he was trying to recapture the original Fame (1980), where all the cast were genuinely musicians. Some of the grittiness of Fame, diminished due to the saccurine kids tv series. The Commitments still feels authentic to it's place and time, thanks to the legacy of the cast.
Dark end of the street and Chain chain chain are just so bloody good. On the album there was an extra track from Niamh Kavanagh singing the full version of Destination Anywhere which was really good too. Stunning voice. The song was featured in the movie whilst they were riding on a bus, but only for a short while.
When I saw the movie in the theaters, I took an ol' blues picker friend with me. He was BLOWN AWAY! As we were leaving he exclaimed, "Now THAT is what it's REALLY like to be in a band!"
Can I add THEE most successful singer/musician only had a small 1 line speaking part in the movie, Andrea Corr. Lead singer of the very successful family band The Coors played Jimmy's cute sister.
For anyone who doesn't know, all the band members in 'The Commitments' were great singers in real life. The big guy with the ponytail - who we see here singing Mustang Sally - was discovered, in real life, one night when he was a bit drunk, and he was singing at a train station in Ireland. And that's the same way Rod Stewart was discovered back in the day!
@@coolnamebro Also not true! Andrew Strongs Dad, Rob, was the vocal coach for the band in the movie and one day Andrew performed a rehearsal of Mustang Sally and the director heard it and thought he'd be perfect for the role!
Yeah, I remember, back then, after watching the movie I've been thinking like: movie or not - that was one of the best live cover of Tenderness I've ever heard, it was quite memorable one to be honest, so this video is like - unbelievable.. I never knew that they actually could really do it , especially not this good, on a real stage, as a band.. Amazing. Thank you🎶

Beautiful and extremely talented. She's better than most than pop singers out there. With that much beauty and talent I can't understand why she never broke bigger on the world stage.

The way Andrew strong performs and delivers, reminds me a lot of Joe Cocker
I thank it was more Tom Jones
First person I thought of when I heard him back in 91....
I'll go along wid that, one of the best gigs I ever saw was Joe at The Kent Custom Bike Show (HAMCKEW), Fucking Awesome!
I was shocked to learn he was only 16 when it was filmed
