- let's go back in time to the beginning of 2022 and chat about my first whole-sale type book-making commission that i completed for the amazing watercolor-artist Sarah Simon aka themintgardener on Instagram ( / themintgardener ) and her upcoming Le Marche Reverie workshop in Italy this September.
i adored everything about this amazing opportunity and had so much fun finding, creating the book covers that matched the theme of the workshop and of course the meditative process of binding all the sketchbooks as well as packaging them safely before sending them off to Sarah on the first week of June.
i hope you enjoy this little montage of my very first large scale book-binding commission & the soothing process of book making.

I counted 30-ish books at one time, but I'm sure you made more! If you hand-binded these and customized the covers, it must've taken you ages!

thank you very much! these were made with long grain direction. 😊
How is the technique called for the beautiful golden stampings that you heated up with the hairdryer?
it’s called embossing 😊
You stamp the image in Versamark ink then you add embossing powder and heat it up with a heating tool. It's very satisfying to see it melt. Give it a try.
They turned out so lovely! What a great way to repurpose old books. They are so much more interesting than new books, like they have personality. Can I ask, when working with the cotton watercolor paper that's thicker, did you also glue the binding of the signatures like you do for your regular journals, or did you just only sew these signatures? Thanks for sharing your work :)
