I have heard this many times in the past and other of John's songs, like it a lot. These days, having spent 35+ years working in tall buildings and looking at retirement, it hits home.
Thanks for putting this on. I knew John and this is one of my favorite of his songs... so sad that I cry every time I hear it. John was gentle and free and had the sense to stay out of tall buildings most of his life. A great man... I'm glad his fans keep him here...
I miss John. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t play some John Hartford,, Whether in the car, on the stereo, or just sitting around playing some good old John Hartford songs..... Every day is John Hartford day to me! a sound system or instrument
This has to be from the mid-seventies. The intro to this series (Julia Belle Swain) is a song from Mark Twang, which was released in 1976, a good portion of this concert are songs from that album. Great posting, brings back a lot of memories.
His textbook on songwriting ( lyrics first, then genre appropriate music) was deeply reassuring to me. Roy Orbison introduced us in the early 80's and John was an amazing friend to me, too.
This has to be older than 1992. I saw him in 1989 and he was much older than he is in this video. His voice in here is also much smoother than it was later in his career.
@sourisvoleur I'm glad your enjoying the John Hartford videos, the man was one of a kind ! VHS Release Date: June 2, 1992. I'm not sure when it was actually recorded,... see my other videos for lots more Hartford material. Thanks for tuning in folks :)
I'm going to say early 80's. I saw this show on public TV in WV when I was in college. That Rambling show was great. The Norman and Nancy one is amazing also.
yeah, he only wrote the second most covered song of all time, "Gentle on my Mind'" On, McCartney's Yesterday is #1.Listen to his music, he was a one man band. Best banjo, great fiddle, and, of course, his Presbyterian guitar..

make your way to the John Hartford Memorial Festival in Bean Blossom Indiana sometime!
This year is #10
I can't listen to John Hartford enough. I'm so glad I was able to see him a couple of times in Louisville in the 90's. Just great!!
Such a bittersweet tune. RIP John. Hope the waters where you are run sweet and true.

So talented, and sadly missed.
That unruly mop is awesome!
Thanx for posting, I lived in Toronto and didn't get down his way, too bad, I love his music and wish I could have seen him.
I absolutely love this song. I remember my dad's record player blasting this on many an evening.
John would have been 78 years old today...
Cool. My SS teacher told me to listen to this.
Such a honey!!
NICE!!
My worst fear is working in tall buildings.
