  • This is a demonstration of how the phone's GPS receiver works independently from cell service or lack thereof, even from 35,000 feet in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico in a plane.

    Thanks for the clip. And many thanks for the absence of the usual long-winded intro that most youtubers make us suffer through.

    How do I get my phone to use GPS for navagation. Every navigation app i've tried required being connected to the internet, even Offline Maps which another problem.
    Why do they call it offline maps but then it tells me I need to be online when I try to use it in an area with no internet?

    • @planesimple8514
      @planesimple8514  6 місяців тому

      Are you sure you have pre-downloaded the map for the area you will be navigating in?
      If you already have, then there's no reason that it shouldn't work.
      I have done this many times, even in other countries where I don't have cell coverage whatsoever. I have pre-downloaded the maps of where I'm going to be and have always been able to use my phone to navigate.

      @@planesimple8514 Yes, I down loaded maps for multiple countrys and confirmed them with wifi and my phone currier, but as soon as I was out of coverage area and try to use Google's Online Maps or certain other navigation apps they say theres no interntet connection.

    Sooo ..if I'm going to Joshua Tree National Park, which has little to zero cell/data service, I can just download an offline map of the park on Google Maps on my iPhone, and the GPS (which is a different kind of data than what my cell data uses) will accurately place my blue dot location on my downloaded maps? That's so cool ..i won't get lost then.

    Will the phone talk to you with the directions?

      That's a great question XSquibX, I don't know. I suppose it should, I don't see why not. I'd have to try it.
      Thanks for bringing that up.

      don't think so, but if you download the offline maps of where you're going to be, you will always know where you are

    My question is a little different, cool video but could you tell me since I made the mistake of purchasing an iPad that is not cellular plan compatible, why even when connected to hotspot/Wi-Fi or none of my GPS apps working term for turn? Do they need to have a cellular plan?

    • @planesimple8514
      @planesimple8514  Рік тому

      Hello 18LonelyRollers, I'm not sure, try turning on "location" somewhere in your settings. It may be turned off or disabled.
      And thanks for watching my video.

      Google Maps allows offline map downloads at least on Android

    What about with no cell phone plan bought?

    • @planesimple8514
      @planesimple8514  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Joshua, It's the same thing.
      You can pre download the maps using a Wi-Fi connection, and then go out away from any internet connection at all that the GPS will still work as normal.
      The phone's GPS will still work independent from any internet service.
      The GPS satellites constantly send out a signal which is what the phone's GPS receiver reads. It only needs the map to be preloaded on the phone and you'll be set.

      So I can use my phone without service as a car tracking device eh

    • @planesimple8514
      @planesimple8514  2 роки тому

      You wouldn't be able to track it remotely and in real time since it's not connected to any service, but you may be able to retrieve the phone later and see a log of where it has been.

    Google maps won't show gps coordinate without cell conn.

    • @planesimple8514
      @planesimple8514  Рік тому +1

      Hello Nee World Odor(cool name).
      I believe it does. If you tap on the blue dot that shows your location, a window pops up that says "Your Location", and underneath that it should show the GPS coordinates of your current location.
      I tried it on my phone by putting it in airplane mode to turn off cell service. Then opened up Google maps and did the steps described above and it worked.
      But I also have my local map downloaded as an offline map, so that may be why mine worked.
      Try yours and let me know what happens.

      @@planesimple8514 Thx. I'll do that. I also found an app called AndroSensor which instantly displays my GPS coordinates. There are circumstances where I just want to give someone my coordinates. But don't want to mess with a map.

    • @planesimple8514
      @planesimple8514  Рік тому

      No problem. I checked out that app(Androsensor) and it looks pretty freaking cool. Very bare bones, straight up data readings directly from the onboard sensors. That is super cool and worth needing over.
      Thanks for the tip.
