  • I've replaced a lifetime of screwdrivers and pliers and quite a jumble they were. I've chosen to go with Kraftform 300 screwdrivers from Wera and pliers and cutters from Knipex.

Knipex = best choice ever in pliers... I have a bunch on them. I fell in love with their diagonal cutters, snap they cut, and have been buying their products ever since. I think I have like 30 to 35 pliers of different types for each of my three tool sets. You should look into the pliers wrench model. A set of three, 180, 250 and 300 mm covers all your nut and bolt bases and nearly eliminates adjustable wrenches and spanners for the most part. Love these pliers.
Wera = best choice... just be prepared that those soft surfaces on the Wera' will rot (flake and smell up) after 15 years or so. This is not exclusive to Wera but to all similarly rubbered screw drivers. Mine stank and I replaced them over time. I have a 3 sets of Wera screw drivers... insulated permanently in a tool belt, black handled permanently in a tool tote or tool box, and wooden handled set for in home shop. The wooden ones are next to none.
    Tool nut I am!
    Good review

I Brazeau Thanks for the comment. I have subsequently got the plier-wrenches which are bloody amazing and the electricians shears which are the best shop scissors I’ve ever owned. Time will tell with the wera but they work and since filming I have a tool roll style kit in the house and a second with my boat which I’ve tweaked for boat fittings. Anyhow there’s more on hand tools to come. Keep watching.

If anyone is doing a lot with slotted screws then I recommend they look at PB Swiss Tool screwdrivers. The have parallel ground tips, so are very resistant to camming out. Yes, they're Swiss, so are not cheap. At all.

Thanks I'll check them out. I mostly use brass slotted screws and when I do that's because they're on-show. A good screwdriver is essential.

Here in the states, the godforsaken philips head is dominant, but Torx is taking over. Pozidrive never got a look-in, with only the square/Robertson being seen also.
That being said, the laser-tip of the Wera is indeed sensational for Philips. By far the best I’ve experienced. I don’t like the handles at all (I prefer Wiha or Witte tri-lobe) but each to their own.
As for pliers, I do like my Knipex’ and their Pliers-wrench is worth a look to compliment the classic Crescent adjustable (Bahco being my favorite).
If spanners are on your horizon, may I suggest you look at Stahlwille. I love em.

@@StrawbyteWorkshop If your looking at spanners, I can recommend Toptul, high quality tools made in Taiwan, there spanners and socket sets are excellent for the price, the fit and finish are excellent, apparently Toptul make the Facom 440 combination spanner set for Facom, I recently bought these Toptul extra long combination spanners 10-19 mm from this uk seller this is the cheapest I could find them in the UK, price includes postage as well, you won't be disappointed with the quality of the product, tool truck quality at an affordable price www.ewsupplies.co.uk/shop/tools/wrenches/sets/toptul-gaaf1008/

Hi Karl thanks for the tips good to see another vid. Personally I cant bear to get rid of old tools even if they are no good. I tend to still have them on display, thinking one day they might be useful again. I think I have a senti-mentality 'problem'? They are like old friends who made your life easier I guess. Glad your old ones get another chance!

Hey there. I must admit my eclectic mix of tools did look quite nice on the wall of the old workshop and I sort of miss that. My 4 racks with a consistent set of tools does look rather too neat. If you promise not to tell anyone I have kept a few back for sentimental reasons. As for the rest I've passed them down to my son.

Oddly, only yesterday I was wondering where you'd got to Karl as it's been a while since you last uploaded.
To be honest, manual screwdrivers aren't something I'd hold a lot of store in except for tight spaces where you can't get a power driver in. I always use Dewalt bits for the power driver which provide, (at least in my experience), a lot of torque and a good fit into the head. My manual screw drivers are all Draper with the hex fitting for applying a spanner where extra torque is needed.
The biggest issue with manual screw drivers is the screw heads are often chewed out because enough weight isn't put behind the driver sufficiently.

Thanks for your comment. And yes it's been a good few weeks. Partly due to the fact I wanted to spend February getting to grips with my 3D Printer and avoid a cold workshop, and partly due to life just getting in the way. I didn't cover power driver bits but I've been using mostly Axminster Trade Bitz over the last year or so. But someone gave me some DeWalt bits to try, insisting they're the best you can get, and I must say the outlast the Axminster ones by about twice as long. Anyway thanks for watching.

Hi yes I find the wera screw driver very good quality and the handle extremely comfortable to hold . Sadly I only have one ?.Most of mine are Stanley over 40 years old and still going nowadays cordless screwdriver has taken over but there is still a need for hand hold . You know I never noticed the hex on the wera handle great video thanks for sharing best regards Shaun 😀. Ps new subscriber to your channel and I like it thanks

They certainly were. At one point I did want to see if I could get a complete set of them and found some new old-stock on ebay. But given the range of screw-types that need drivers wanted a complete set comparable to my old Stanleys. I've a few Stanley Yankees that will be getting a make-over shortly if you're all nostalgic about tools. Thanks for watching and commenting.
