Hmmm. I live in Saskatchewan and had my children go to school to graduate as bilingual. Every time my children have met a person from Quebec they were thrilled to find someone they could use their french on. Only to be belittled on how bad their french was, told they spoke as a child might, etc. That's when I gave up. Do yourself a favor, don't put your kids in immersion.

Bonjour, I have just found this site and thank you, you made me smile.
If you make the effort (and show respect) by using French, it will be appreciated. I am an Irish Expat who retired to France some years ago. I stopped learning French at school when I was 15 years old (50 years ago) but it is surprising what you can remember (a glass of wine does help).
The proof for me was so obvious when a few years ago I visited a local business to arrange for some work needed on my car. I spoke in my best French (not the best French) to the proprietor and he replied in English. While waiting in the shop, two English Expats came in and made no attempt to speak French, the proprietor made no attempt to speak English when he replied.

For English speakers the tenses and conjugations are always what gives us away for Romance languages.
I study Spanish but as I understand it French is rather similar with specific conjugations for every pronoun.
English conjugations are super simple. They barley change, sometimes not at all or just an “ed” or “s”. So when trying to speak a Romance language we end up not conjugating at all or just using one conjugation over and over even if it’s wrong (without realizing).

I was forgetting French over the years. I always spoke in Spanish to my kids, but we always sang a lot of French songs. Now I speak to them in French and Spanish. It’s actually helping me a lot because it makes me think of ways of saying everyday things to them in French. Also I’m finding out they understand quite a bit now due to repetition of phrases and words so it’s benefiting myself and my children. Might be a useful approach for anyone with young children. Another fantastic video. I think it's very common to be able to read and understand a language before being able to speak it. I love your advice. There is no substitute for actually meeting a native speaker who is willing to talk with you and also help correct your mistakes. Speaking is a totally different animal. It takes time, but you WILL get there. Total immersion is obviously the best, then you are forced to make yourself understood. You learn quickly how to say "I'm sorry, I didn't understand" or "can you repeat that a bit slower, please." Also when I lived in Paris and my level was getting better, if I didn't know the vocabulary word for something, I would just start describing it. It's shape, color, smell, whatever it took for the person to understand what I meant, and then they would provide me with the missing word. I would never forget it after that!

Several times in my life I've had to try to dredge up my school French and have been surprised by how my brain will bring it up in an emergency! Was fortunate to start French in 4th grade, and my teacher was une Francaise, une Parisienne. She married an American after the war (I'm in my 60's). Placed out of French I in high school, but took II, III, and IV. Placed out of the language requirement in college but took a French review for reading in grad school. But 30 years later, when working at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, I used my French at least 3 time--with a man from one of the French-speaking African countries, with someone looking for an employee from France, and with a Brazilian woman who didn't know English but did know French. I was shy as a kid, so I never spoke enough in class, but when I need to give information to others, somehow I remember enough to help. Recently I was watching a video of Japanese people with cats. I must have read the captions for about a minute before I realized they were in French, not English. It really helps to have put all that in your brain when you were a kid. Definitely not fluent in speech, but I can read fairly well and, if I practice, my accent is still pretty good. Unfortunately, my accent in both French and Italian is better than my actual knowledge of the grammar, vocabulary and idioms. Sigh...
