    That 505 is beautiful!
    In the mid-late 80's when the 505's were discontinued Paiste introduced a whole new line. They had the green labeled 1000's, the blue labeled 2000's and the red labeled 3000's.
    The 2000 and 3000 series were marketed as 2002 successors. In reality the 2000's were basically 505's. The regular finish 2000 series are almost if not identical to the 505's in look and sound. Can't say the same for the Sound Reflections or Colorsound finishes. The regular finish 1000 series are closer to the 404's. They also had an un-lathed 1000 RUDE series that was thinner than the original and 3000 series RUDE's. Oddly enough the 1000 RUDE's sound like the 505's as well. Sadly the 3000, 2000, and 1000 series are almost just as hard to find as 505's. I still have my 1000 RUDE series 14" HH's, 18" ride/crash, 18" china, with a 20" 2000 series power ride.

      A very good synopsis! I was working in retail when the 1000, 2000 and 3000 were current. Things definitely became a little confusing until Paiste realised they should have left 2002 alone! I always wanted a set of 505s. I was very young at the tail end of them being current and they were out of my financial reach. I've managed to put together a set now which is almost complete. I'll upload some more videos as I have finally set up a studio space to get more videos done! Thanks for watching and your comment!

    Bright, crisp, beautiful, with cutting bell sounds. Paiste knows B8! Love this brand, 😻

    the PST 7 is probably stamped into shape with minimal hammering. The 2002 and 505 are fully manually machine hammered to create their shape!

      However, the PST7 takes advantage of the special Paiste Sound Technology lathing process, a process that was pioneered with the Innovations series.
      TBH, though, a PST7 light ride would've been a better comparative to the other two.

      @@DeanMk1 Yeah the light ride is awesome too, I compare it to my 20 inch Zildjian i series crash/ride, somewhat darker, a plus with my trashy dark wuhan crashes for me. Even the regular Zildjian I family series ride is better..Its all preference for practice, like I like my trashy Wuhan, but recording with it might not go well for everyone.

    Good to see pst7s can stand with a cymbal that cost twice as much thanks for your time ✌

    2002 is the best one, for that expected recorded ride sound👍🏻

    I highly recommend finding a used 505 cymbal over a brand new pst7, much much better quality of sound and most likely for much less money. Both are great anyway. Paiste discontinued 505s as soon as they realised their 2002 sales started dropping in their favor in the 80s lol

    Look at these hammer marks on old 505. This is sic, this cymbal hammered more dense then 2002.

    I always had a strange feeling that B8 alloy was always associated with bad sound because of Sabian B8 entry-level cymbals.
    I mean, one of my fellow drummers was obsessed with Paiste 2002s and he was planning to buy himself a set of these, he was like "hell yeah, it sounds amazing, because it's B20". You should've seen the shock on his face when I opened up the official webpage of Paiste 2002s for him :D

    • @ekimnamtnuts
      @ekimnamtnuts  Рік тому +1

      I was actually the same and it was exactly Sabian B8 that made me sneer too! I didn't have this realisation until late on into my drumming career and the irony is all my favourite drummers such as Ian Paice, John Bonham etc used 2002 on most of their most iconic recordings!

      I have had many Paiste cymbals including a full set of 2002 (and a 19" prototype china) because of Ian Paice but the sold them. I can't stand the metallic overtones of b8/10/12 alloy.

    Nobody does B8 better than Paiste. Not even your top Turks like Istanbul or Bosphorus.
    I once had a set of 505 Green Label 14" hats...some of the best hats, and I had played Bos/Agop hats...

    Great review, I’m actually going to look for a 20” or 22” 505 ride, they’re still a good price out in the market.

      Love 505s, they're great. I'm looking out for crashes now but I'm trying for ones in really good condition.

    I just got a Pearl 20” CX-500 today knowing nothing about it and found out it was an 80s rip off of the Paiste 505, hence discovering this video. Great comparison. Love my new ride and can’t believe how good B8 sounds. Paiste are the only people (and Pearl’s 80s ride I guess!) who can make B8 sound this good.

    Meinl and Paiste both make the best sounding B8 alloy cymbals. The Zildjian budget lines made with B8 alloy sound atrocious in comparison. I bought a set of Zildjian 'ZBT' cymbals (18" ride/crash and 14" hats , which I believe are made of sheet B8 bronze alloy; for cheap via Ebay; for student drum lesson purpose and they sounded so bad I was embarrassed to play them and sold them within a couple of months for what I paid for them.

      I have the new Zildjian I series, its definetely improved since i had the ZBT pro set 20+ years ago. Still have some zbt from a used kit a couple years now, and yeah, i beat them with a hammer, total change from clangy to trashy.

    Interesting how the 505 has a quality similar to the old nickel-silver cymbals they used to make, like the cymbals they made for Ludwig a long time ago. I like that sound. I was heartbroken to learn that they had discontinued the Paiste Line "Silver Mellow" ride, which also had that kind of quality - just more full-toned and lively.

    I like the body sound of the 505 the best but the 2002 bell is the best.

    I may be hallucinating to some, but this 2002 regular ride does sound a lot like the Zildjian I series crash/ride to me..Also the pst7, but not sure which is better than the Zildjian i series now as a ride, the crashing is always a different result.The pst7 and the 2002 seem very similar in this video! I find now i have to tape washy cymbals, maybe that goes with what songs your playing. Painters tape will do!

    • @ekimnamtnuts
      @ekimnamtnuts  Рік тому +2

      Yeah I was really surprised how close the PST7 and 2002 were, in actual fact they sound even more similar in the flesh, I think the recording mic accented the difference in tone more than my ear was hearing it acoustically. (I just recorded through the phone microphone). I have a massive collection of cymbals and I'm going to do some more sound test videos particularly on my favourite 1980s K series crashes. They sound quite different to modern K crashes! Thanks for watching!
