  • Transform food waste into a valuable food supply for chickens, hogs, songbirds and fish with Black Soldier Fly Production. Karl Warkomski, Director of Conservation with ProtaCulture, LLC introduces us to this astounding insect that can break down food waste faster than microbes. Black Soldier Fly maggots make a high fat, high protein source of nourishment while making what is normally waste into a valuable farm/garden asset.

    The only thing about these guys, is that they like to buzz around real quick, like a wasp. I've accidentally killed them many time thinking they were a wasp. I will also input my experience with them and vermiculture. I have 2 worm bins with european nightcrawlers. The soldier fly has always been around the compost and decided to also use the worm bins as a breeding grounds. I have experienced that the soldier fly larve will not only reproduce, but also provide food in a more accessible form to the composting worms . Even through the "infestation" of the BSF, the compost worms are doing fine. Once the season is over I will harvest and check the worm population, but after months of feeding and super harsh heat, both species so far are doing great. I can go down about 4-5 inches in the bin and the compost worm activity is ideal. Thanks Living Web Farms for the great video series!

    This was a great series. I've been planning to start growing these to use as bait and chum while keeping food scraps out of the landfill.

    Thanks for making this series. I live in south Texas where these critters occur naturally. Found some crawling through some old mushy dog food that got rained on and now I know how to utilize them. I've already got my bin under construction and I've got some big plans to go with it!

    Second year with your small pod. I wish I had heard Pat's comment on Biochar for the fluid separation the first time I watched the video - since I produce biochar. I will have to try next year. I love the Soldier Fly, great conversation starter when we have company.

    can you freeze dry them to use as dry food for later - FD during the bountiful months so you have feed for winter? FD'ing good preserves around 95% of the nutrients - higher than any other form of preservation.

    You've mentioned the issue of slippery ramps on new setups. Since your "tub" is made from plastic, how hard would it be to make the ramps a bit less slippery, (maybe sand blast that part of the mold, or something similar)?
    The farmer can (of course) scuff the plastic ramp a bit during the initial setup, but a design solution would be preferable, imho.

      obviously if you have the place heated and can add enough food for the BSFL then yes.

  • @ronyerke9250
    @ronyerke9250 6 років тому +1

    Why not use sandpaper on the new ramps to make crawl off easier? 220 grit should work without doing a lot of damage.

    • @joeyl.rowland4153

      He explained that. It stops the food scraps from crusting over. It also helps to stop housflies.

  • @SpiritedLady76

    When the flies lay the eggs on the burlap (which is laid on the top of the food), how are the eggs able to get below into the medium to the food?

    • @walkingmonument
      @walkingmonument 8 років тому +3

      The larvae hatch from the eggs and follow the smell towards the food and they fall in the container. They are tiny when they enter the container. I live in Florida and we have a composting bin in the backyard. One day when I opened the bin I noticed these freaky looking larvae and I was scratching my head trying to figure how they got in because everything is so tight. Well the momma doesn't need to get in. She just lays her eggs somewhere she deems safe on the the bin and her babies find their way in.

    Do you have to put dirt or something else in there or is it only larvae, and food. Building up from the plastic, then mesh, then food, then larvae. Do you put dirt on top?

    • @joeyl.rowland4153
      @joeyl.rowland4153 2 роки тому

      No dirt. Only food scraps. The BSF larvae will consume those food scraps and turn them into a very rich soil. That soil has to be mixed with topsoil before planting plant. What the larvae leave is very similar to chicken manure.(it is by the way manure) it is super strong it will burn your plants.
