No one had a problem to be filmed because they didn’t have the “fear” to do something wrong or stupid and end up on the internet where everyone can watch them and laugh at them, nowadays you wouldn’t be able to record so freely like this
I'm currently a school teacher and it seems from my memory and from this video that many of these kids back in the late 90s seemed have a much more natural sense of humor, maturity and confidence than the kids I interact with today.
99 Things with Ryan Briggs Video tape must degrade horribly because the quality of this video looks like something from the early 80s. Not 1999. I should know, I’m 35 years old and I don’t remember video looking this crappy at the dawn of the 21st century. I’m shocked actually. Either that or it was taken on a really old camcorder. It’s bizarre.
@@kconrad5893 I graduated in 99 myself. Theres so much about watching this that seems off, and it's not issues with the capture quality. Theres been few people who look anything like teenagers in 1999. This video feels way more like late 80s. The clothing, hairstyles, its just wrong.
Electrocudead Twitch Right??? Thank you! It’s so bizarre.....maybe it was a really small town or something where they were behind the times? This is not at all the 1999 I remember at all. And what’s even more ridiculous is that these kids who probably weren’t even alive are arguing with me about it.
Well it’s sort of self selecting. People who were awkward probably made sure not to be on camera. Also, they all assumed that only they would ever see it anyway. They might have been more awkward if they knew millions of people were going to eventually see it one day.
I think they were more accostumed to socializing, nowadays technology took that away from us, if someone put a camera in front of me just like that i wouldnt know what to say.
watch the video completely and pay close attention to the differences to the present time, then you will know why it will never be the same again as it was then.
Why do I feel sad watching this, like if this shit was my life and I'm looking back at it. I'm feeling nostalgic for a generation I wasn't even alive for
It’s because you feel the energy, it was a cool time back then, very laid back and chill, i was in middle school at this time and grad high school in 2005.
It was a different time. Life was lived in the present. Imagine, no internet (unless you were some rich nerd), the phone was wired and one line only at home. Video Games weren't online. You literally had no choice but to live in the moment and bond with people.
eaflores it’s funny cuz it’s the opposite of what you’re implying. Smoking in high school was much more common back then which makes you look way older. Since there’s more information about smoking now and it’s less accessible, people don’t do it as much.
This shit is crazy. This guy took a time machine forreal fr. This man said, "see how beautiful the girls were back in this time." Dude knew the world was gonna see this video
Class of 2005 here. I definitely knew what life in 1999 was like for school. It feels very long ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. We talked to each other, had broad rangesof music in the mainstream to listen to, and we were optimistic about the future.
To me from 1990 to 1994 were like 1986 to 1989. Then from 1995 to 1997 were similar to me as for as style goes. Then 1998 to 1999 were the same, in my opinion.
You’ll notice that seniors in years past look like adults and are huge! Now seniors in high school look much younger and are relatively smaller/shorter.
The way they dressed, the way they talked, the way they acted, the way their hair looked, all so different from now. Everyone seemed alot nicer and healthier without social media.
Class of 1998 here! Sheldon Clark High School in Eastern Kentucky. Our years of high school really were the best. We were witnessing technology become socially acceptable but we were all much more happy hanging out, listening to music, talking about any and everything, and just really enjoying life. I miss those days and feel sorry for kids today that they will never know what a life not glued to their screens actually has to offer. Take me back to the 90's, sir! Salute!
@Ivan Stemberga that's right! In fact, most middle-class households owned a video camera. But they were cumbersome and required cassettes, so people rarely recorded with them unless it was a special occasion. Which is why I said that "being recorded was so rare" :)
For all those who are saying no one was tripping when being recorded, of course no one was tripping it was the last day of school, it was the last time they were gonna see each other, I would want someone to remember me
Umm maybe also bc this was recorded for themselves and was only chosen to be uploaded to youtube years later... They had nowhere to post this back then people just took videos like this to personally look back on
That's not why. This is before social media and "going viral" wasn't a thing. So no one was worried about their image being misrepresented or being spread all over the internet. Being filmed was fun because we all knew the footage was confined to whoever had it. Basically, life was simpler before social media.

I was class of '98 and it wasn't that much different than what you see here. Huge school. Banter, fun, bullying, fitness - no social media, barely any fat kids, no phones. I feel bad for kids these days. I'll never forget this one girl who would sit behind me and play footsie with me. Looking back, what a golden era.
Wow watching this is almost healing. Im 45 (class of 97) and even though i didnt go to this school it just takes me back to that time. A time of freedom and fun. A time when mom took care of me still. A time when being funny with your buddies and talking with girls was everything. Then life hits and it hits hard, and youre scrambling to keep your head above water. 😄
90s still had it's problems. There was huge culture war at the time which ignited much of the madness today, the economy was pretty bad until the internet boom, there was still an epidemic of social alienation amongst teenagers, Columbine happened just two months before this and 9/11 is around the corner. Consider also that it's not like they are aware of how precious the time they're living or have the idea that they are the last generation to remember a world before the internet, keep that in mind. I''m sure kids in the 90s looked back at prior decades such as the 80s, 70s and even the 60s and wondered what it might have been like. The past is so seductive because it gives you a comfort in knowing there is absolute certainty of what is forthcoming.
David Nolan exactly. I’m reading comments from people who wished they were in high school in the 00’s. Well I started high school in 2005. Less than half of us had cellphones, some of us didn’t have emails, and Google was still competing with Yahoo!, but by the time we graduated, the vast majority of us had smartphones, we all had FB, and a lot had Twitter. It makes me feel ancient to see people commenting that they wish they had been in high school during my high school years 😂 I completely fail to see the appeal.
Exactly. You can find good and bad things about literally any decade. It's easy to romanticize about the decade we grew up in but what we really miss is the lack of complexity that comes with being young.
Damn.. Makes me so envious. They live in such a peaceful time. Never worrying about a thing. Never rushing to be anywhere. No phones. Everyone is present and everyone is a part of the school... Everyone is kind. Things have completely changed.
I mean, we were still people in those times, so there was a variety of personalities. And this was the last day of school, so it's pretty laid back. And we had busy days sometimes, with packed schedules and such. But you're right-- we were present and didn't have the added stress and distraction of a cell phone constantly trying to pull us away from the real world. And while we have fewer photos from those times (no camera phones), we have richer and deeper memories, because instead of filming and posting things, we were feeling and fully experiencing them.
You had no idea how fun it was to work all week just to plan a meetup for the weekend parties, there was always somebody having one, somewhere. Can't do that anymore, people's parents sue or call the cops instead of confirming safe supervision will be present. Used to be able to go drink, smoke, date, fight and just experience life. Nowadays people just "hang out" with each other from across town via an Xbox or PS4 party. Who knows what the girls do. Kinda feel sorry for you guys.
Ryan Briggs you’ve GOT to find a way to show this. It’s funny how time works, because now you can show this video to almost all of them through google drive or something within an instance
I graduated high school in 1995. I miss those days not just because I was young but because people were normal and not so self obsessed like they are today. I have children of my own and hate the world they're growing up in. The world was a much, much better place in the 1990s.
I'm 36 and was a sophomore when this video was made. When I see the dressing/music styles of today I cringe so hard. Getting old sucks. Enjoy being young while you can!
J. Kahu ask your mom does she identify more as a Gen X'er or Millenial because turning 40 this year she's on the cusp and it's really hard to identify. Also, Gen X is the forgotten generation and this video depicts a forgotten group.

As someone who graduated in 2002, I truly appreciate this time capsule. It is an important video that illustrates how many technological revolutions we've had in my relatively short lifetime - computing, internet, smart phone and generative AI. It is hard to believe sometimes how different my life was then compared to now. I feel like a dinosaur when my young children ask me questions about my youth.
Interesting. Around the time you were a junior, I was barely born. I experienced the 2000s to a limited extent and I remember it fondly, wish I was able to experience more of it
@@HatredInTheFlesh It was a pretty fun time to be honest. People just matured faster with less hormones in the foods. It was normal to see a 14 year old with a full beard at 6’1 for example. Nowadays everyone wants to be coddled and babied
no, testosterone levels drop 1% each year since the 80's because the government puts atrazine and mercury in our food and water. Atrazine is a genocide that changes your gender. "the rise of feminized men"
Oscar Gonzalez as a woman and 30 I agree with you. While in the military they told us they had to put testosterone in the food of the male barracks because of the intense training. When we tasted their food it made some of us sick and many women became more hard and masculine. With that and the environment in the Marines I had to fight to stay feminine but tough at the same time. The same is in the food and water like you said. It makes no sense that kids look like 12 in the 12th grade playing varsity football and weigh only 130. It’s weird. Mix that with the constant propaganda pushed at us even subliminally for the 80s and 90s babies and programs practically taught us how to be the other gender. Remember back when we were young and people everywhere were saying “You can be whatever your want to be.” The lie started there before the agenda became obvious.
Look at the freedom and autonomy kids had back then. It's no wonder we're still all so immature in our 30s. We were treated like Toddlers in High School. These kids got to be individuals and wear clothes and just live life.
Everything about this video seems so natural and pure... Like nobody is on their phones browsing social media or the internet for validation of themselves by thousands of other by likes or shares... Just people communicating, laughing and having fun.

Exactly right. You're one of the few who get it.
Me too lmao
I like how all these people are charismatic and not socially awkward at all on camera.
G L probably because they thought it couldn’t be posted? idk
Well it’s sort of self selecting. People who were awkward probably made sure not to be on camera. Also, they all assumed that only they would ever see it anyway. They might have been more awkward if they knew millions of people were going to eventually see it one day.
I think its because porn wasn't so easily accessible to corrupt their minds back then as it is now, plus no social media so they had more personality
I think they were more accostumed to socializing, nowadays technology took that away from us, if someone put a camera in front of me just like that i wouldnt know what to say.
That's because there wasn't as near as many autistic slow students back then.

Yeah I don't think so...Students don't magically change personalities at the last day of school

I feel exactly what you mean

Bad news: everyone was NOT kind.
And this is the year Columbine happened elswhere
I mean, we were still people in those times, so there was a variety of personalities. And this was the last day of school, so it's pretty laid back. And we had busy days sometimes, with packed schedules and such. But you're right-- we were present and didn't have the added stress and distraction of a cell phone constantly trying to pull us away from the real world. And while we have fewer photos from those times (no camera phones), we have richer and deeper memories, because instead of filming and posting things, we were feeling and fully experiencing them.
I can assure you we still had places to rush to and many worries and not everyone was kind. 😅

Why do the people in this video look like in a movie when everyone in “high school” looks 30? 😂😂😂
Lmfao I was looking for this comment..
so trueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Teens of today look like they’re in middle school. if anything these teens look normal and the 18 year olds of today look 13 lol
High school students looked old back then. I was in high school in the late 90s and times were very different compared to now.
i think that the camera quality makes them look a little older
Cool. My graduation year. 1999. So relatable it’s not even funny.
Actually makes me wanna cry and laugh at the same time.
THANK YOU for this 🥺😌
Man how I miss the 90’s. Every time I see these videos, it makes me want to go back more and more. What a wonderful time it was!
We had a 20th reunion! It’s up on the channel! Be sure to watch it!
i wish i could live in the 1990’s. their personalities, their hair, the way they dressed, no phones. it’s everything.
Morgan Symens u would get bullied
Morgan Symens man same
@@thequesttofindthegnar1017 i dont care
Besides some of the racial issues during that time yea I would of love to be born, unfortunately I'm in highschool now and its disappointing far😐
People have been saying stuff like this since forever. In 1999 people were complain about how their generation was obsessed with the Backstreet Boys and JTT and Britney Spears. And I can absolutely guarded that in 2050, they’”lol be some teenager somewhere crying about how terrible her generation is and she wishes everyone was more like they were in 20s.
Ahh yes... a time where there was no tik tok dancing
not a single renegade was in sight
The ahh yes always gets me 😂💀
I WAS LITERALLY DANCING WHEN I SAW THIS COMMENT LMAAOo
Why they look older:
low quality recording + clothing styles / colors + hairstyles + manner of speaking
This exactly.
Aesthetic

Considering they didn’t know what social media was and they could only access the internet by getting on a computer, this was just normal to them
@@IJustbeGolfing it's the fact that, in this video they are living the right way and what also worrying is that today people their age now see social media as the normal it's completely unhealthy for the mind to develop
Ok boomer

The same social media that is meant to "bring us together" only pushes us further and further apart. Very little human interaction these days and its only going to get much much worse
