Lemme explain-
So basically pochita made a contract with him that as long as denji lives the life he longed for he can use pochitas power but after discovering the traumatic experience hidden behind the door (to which makima provoked denji to do) the contract breaks as he is no longer normal or happy, so does the true form of chainsaw devil manifests and later we can see that pochita (who has taken over denji) tries to go on a date eitg kobinai to fulfill the contract and bring denji back again.

Edit - he made contract at start of the series when he was abt to die from zombie devil, well they didnt tell us it was a contract but we can assume as there were conditions for denji to fill

Its like his mind gave him a warning saying no but he just ignored and bad things kept happening. Must of missed this part in the manga
