ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY ARTICLE :
When we spoke with the 71-year-old Gibb, he was at a disadvantage. He still hadn’t heard the demo in the four decades since he recorded it. But his memory of how the song came about was so clear, he didn’t have to. “I remember doing it,” he says. “I just don’t remember ever hearing it afterwards. I just remember that it all happened in one afternoon.”
E: What do you remember of actually writing the song “Grease”?
BARRY GIBB: I was babysitting and my wife was out. And [Bee Gees manager and Grease producer] Robert Stigwood called up and said. “I have two wonderful new songs by John Farrar called ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ and ‘You’re the One that I Want.’ But what we don’t have is a song for the title of the film. Could you come up with a song called ‘Grease’?” I said, “How do you write a song called ‘Grease’? I don’t understand what direction I would take to do that.” And Robert said, “Just Grease duh-duh-duh-duh-duh, Grease duh-duh-duh-duh-duh.” So he wasn’t very helpful. But I understood that they really wanted something that was positive and sunny. It really all happened in that afternoon. I walked on the dock for a bit….
E: Where was this?
BARRY: Here in Miami, on Biscayne Bay. And so I went out on the dock and walked around thinking, Well, Grease is symbolic of that period with the Greasers and all that. And it’s really my period. My favorite time is the late ‘50s. And so it suddenly occurred to me to write about Grease as a word because it represented a time. So Grease became the word.
E: So how long did it take to get the lyrics down on paper?
BARRY : About two hours. Because if I get an idea and my head says to me, “This is good, do it!” then I’ll just go with it. It began to make sense and it just fell into place. I can’t really explain it.
If it only came that easy all the time….
It doesn’t. All songs are a little bit different. Some things come all at once - and usually in the middle of the night. Dreams, for me, give me songs. And so I have to then shape the thought. But if the thought in my head says, “You have to do this, this is good”, then I’ll go to work. But my head very often says, “Don’t do this!”
E:This demo was recently found after four decades. Do you know where it had been all this time?
BARRY : No, I don’t. Universal/Capitol has all of our demos and original recordings in house and I just don’t know what’s in there. They didn’t tell me how they found it.
E: Can you believe that it’s been 40 years?
BARRY : Of course, I can. Don’t forget we just went through this same emotion with Saturday Night Fever.
E: Is that you playing the piano on the “Grease” demo?
BARRY GIBB: No. I don’t play piano. I’ll tinkle, but I’m really more of a rhythm guitarist.
E: And what about the handclaps?
BARRY GIBB: I have no idea. (laughs) Possibly me. I don’t have any memory of the handclap. Don’t forget, I haven’t heard the demo in 40 years!
E: Where did you record it?
BARRY GIBB: Probably the Hit Factory, which used to be Criteria.
E: Tell me about the backing vocals you do on the song. It must have been cool to sing with Frankie Valli if he was one of your idols….
BARRY GIBB: Absolutely. What we did was, the bridge: What are we doin’ here? We did that section together in falsetto. A little bit of me and a little bit of him. What a voice! “My Eyes Adored You” and songs like that. That’s a great pop singer.
E: Are you excited to have people hear this demo?
BARRY GIBB: No, not particularly. I’d just rather people enjoy the film as a whole. It was a small thing on my part to come up with that song. I think Robert [Stigwood] loved it, but [Grease producer] Allan Carr was in doubt. But that’s the story of my life. I went through situations with Dionne Warwick, where she didn’t particularly like “Heartbreaker” very much. I’ve been through that situation with Barbra Streisand, where the artist doesn’t necessarily embrace the song as much as you are embracing it giving it to her. But you have to deal with that. That’s a songwriter. I had to convince Dionne Warwick to sing that song. I didn’t have to convince Frankie Valli to sing “Grease”.
I'm a heavy metal guitarist, raised on Anthrax, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath, and I'll be the first to tell you Barry Gibb is one of the greatest songwriters ever. I will actually fight anyone ho she different.
"Grease" is probably one of the top 100 greatest songs ever written, in my view. Anyone who dismisses The Bee Gees as that disco group that was popular for a couple years in the late 70's then disappeared is really selling them short. Barry Gibb is an enormously gifted songwriter.
Berri gibby
Me and my wife Nancy are big bee gees fans it was like Barry robin and Maurice knew what we wanted to hear and they had vocals that were heaven sent their music will go on forever
@@arletesoares1883 hihi
Nothing against Frankie Valli but I wish Barry would have performed it.
You are on drugs...its average at best
2023,first time hearing this demo.Barry is a genius ,the best
I get so emotional when I am struck by genius. Barry Gibb --FREAKING GENIUS!!
Barry, the best singer and songwriter ever. Go Barry! ❤️ June 2022
How freakin' great is this dude! So many classics written by Barry Gibb and/or the Bee Gees that people dont realise they wrote. True musical magician.
Raw Talent...I love hearing songs in their basic original forms...how magical it is ...from beginning raw demo to the brilliant dynamics of final production...Barry Gibb, a genius at work right here...
Barry is killing it from the top of his head
Only a true artist can do that. A real talent. Bee Gees forever!
I laughed at the part where the interviewer asked him if he was excited for people to finally hear this demo and he says 'No', lol
That is the reason and only reason why won't see any kind of release demos. Barry is dead against releasing any of that stuff.
He shouldn't be embarrased, I think it's so fascinating to hear in the demos how he creates music.
@@teijaflink2226 I don't think it's about being embarrassed. He really is not. He mentioned one of the main reasons for him not being in favor of releasing alternate takes and rough demos is because, that's why they've worked so hard in the process of reaching the finished product released for the public listening and establish it as such. Once the song is mixed & mastered, that's the embodiment of all the creation and enhancement that were put forth in it. That's best how the public remembers it.
When a suit is tailored for you, all the scrap fabrics, the folding, and the rest of the residuals need not be seen. It's the custom fit suit which you will wear is what really only matters.
All those songs they presented to us, is in their best form at that time it was being conceived and for Barry, there is definitely no reason for it to be touched or altered.
I share the same view.
Thank you.
Vídeos excelentes.
@@denniseudela411 I really like Barry but if he actually said that. It's a dumb reason lots of great artist have done it Elvis, beatles, Michael Jackson just to name a few
This is amazing. There was nothing these brother’s couldn’t do. Voices like angels and talent like nine other.
Especially Sir Barry!🎶
Absolutely amazing.....Barry is a legend in song writing.....The BEST!!!!
The song was actually 'custom-fit' for Frankie Valli, that's why he delivered it best & in Aug '78 went to No.1.
Barry & twin brothers Robin & Maurice were PROLIFIC songwriters. And that's not even mentioning their unique vocals & harmonizing, good looks, and ADAPTABILITY.
Foremost, they created and formed quality songs from out of nothing.
As you may already know, Barry was the solo writer of Grease. And yes, these brothers were great songwriters, singers, producers. So much talent in that Gibb family.
Wow - never heard this before, absolute quality. I watched this in 1978 aged 9!!!!!
The birth of a classic song!
Sir Barry ❤
Grease is the word
Three is the gibb sound, none other like it

Moje Serce jest przeszczęśliwe kiedy go Slucha.
Frankie's single came up on my Spotify and I immediately thought, I wonder if Barry's demo might be somewhere on the internet. Thanks! I was expecting to dig for a long time, but, thanks to you, I was able to dig up this gem in seconds!
Barry lindo demais parabéns pra vc

Wow, what a great demo. Something that I'll do.
It doesn't sound like the voice of Barry in 78 this it sounds like late too much after that
@@mohannad105 nahh its 1978. Definitely sounds like Barry from then.

Já seria ótimo I I want more !
It took YEARS for me to hear this demo.Likewise it took that long to SEE a photo of Both Barry Gibb and Samantha Sang together in 1977/78 when Emotion had just been recorded.STILL can't say that i have come across a photo of BG and FV in 1978 when they did Grease together.Does such a photo E X I S T ?.
Now release the slow part of Stayin Alive.
I love that bridge, but Barry has not released that Stayin' Alive version...
And he won't!

Love this, struggling to hit the notes... but what feeling!
He's not struggling. It's just a demo
Struggling is not bad. Everyone loves the struggle.
He isnt trying too hard as its only a demo
Make this man the Dolphins number one ticket holder, Redcliffe!
Interessante.
NO ENTIENDO PORQUE BARRY NO QUIERE DELEITAR A SUS FANS CON INEDITOS..????????
ROBIN QUERIA HACERLO PERO EL DESTINO QUISO OTRA COSA PARA EL
And They couldn’t have picked a better singer to cover this...Frankie Valli nailed it..👌🏼
👍👍👌👌💕💕💕🤘
💞💞💞💞💞
This is a demo if he was in a studio it would sound a lot better and to be fare it actually sounds great, but if I know anything about Barry Gibb he would have got a far bigger kick out of Frankie Valli singing it.
Yeah he was trying to take a back seat due the over saturation of the Bee Gees at the time and he thought Frankie would be good because he was from the era when Greasecwas set
O Robin era muito bom , mas Barry Gibb é Barry Gibb , NO VOCAL E NO ESTILO O CARA ERA MUITO FODA
Pardon?
🤣🤣🤣
Barry Gibb was very young….
Lol not that young he was about 32
No not really.
@@TheBrownlj In that one he probably was..
@@chriscravens4915 no Barry wrote it in 1978, he was 32.
Are you referring to the photo and not the recording? The photo was taken of Barry in his home in Miami around the same time he recorded this, around 1977- 1979.
Provavelmente o Maurice no piano.
There is a song from Robin's album Walls Have Eyes titled Modern Girls that was never released. It didn't fit the album according to Robin. Can someone help me find it?
Perhaps it has never been released as a demo
@@TheBrownlj it hasn't been released. We don't even know if it was recorded. I'm just sorta hoping it was
@@EzraTheBlueKnight I haven't heard of it but keep trying.
lol I've been looking for it too😊. There are tons of unreleased recordings that I thought I would never find, but then they suddenly pop up on youtube. Hopefully "Modern Girls" appears on youtube one day.
2019?
2020
1978
i never knew he wrote this song i always thought Frankie Valli wrote this song
I wonder who's playing keys? Mo? Guess it could be Blue.
or Albhy Galuten.
I think Blue not Albhy
I think about it every time I hear it.. maybe could be Blue! Not so natural as Maurice
It's probably Albhy, as Blue wasn't even in LA where this was recorded. It was done during the filming of the Sgt Pepper film.
I don't think it's Blue - that's a quite heavy hand on piano, unlike Blue's. I bet that's George Bitzer, once it was recorded around the time Barry was producing Andy Gibb's Shadow Dancing album.
Prefer frankie vallie version Barry gibbs is a good singer though
I do as well, but it's only a crappy old tape recorder version that was made so Frankie could learn.
It's just a demo. I'm sure the original would've sounded much better if Barry sung it. But Frankie Valli nailed it
Grease is write and produced by Barry Gibb.
I'll tell you what really blew my mind. Listen to the studio version of Grease with Frankie Valli and then ask yourself (which I hadn't until someone asked me the question) who did they have singing those backing vocals? 🤔 Yeah, I had to relisten a few times because I couldn't quite wrap my mind around it. Wow, just wow.
@@cindyknudson2715 When the song was released, I really thought it was a few women doing the background vocals which was nothing new for Frankie Valli's and also the movie's theme. Then , when I had my first Sony Walkman (cassette), as I was reviewing my BEE GEES then listened to this song, I realized... how could I have missed this.
It's all Barry overdubs!
My explanation was that because of the key it was played, Barry's falsetto was on a lower register and pretty much on a woman's voice range.
