Nice to know. I work with a Singer Heavy Duty and I love my Brother SE 400. My go to machines for really heavy duty projects are a vintage Kenmore 1316 or my Bernina Record 830. Both rescued from thrift shops years ago. Thanks for the well done, informative and entertaining videos. Keep it up guy.

I got this machine last month. Just finished a project of 8 layers - two were batting. It didn't hesitate once. Have a couple projects planned for decor fabric, but I am a bit concerned about long-term use of using thick fabric with a sewing machine meant for home use. I am pleased that it does a better job than my Brother SQ9185. Wish it included an extension table - navigation of Brother site for details only directed me to the "closest" dealer. Dealer has no online information on any accessories, supplies, or machines. I'll rig something up until there's an opportunity for a road trip, perhaps in 2022. Otherwise enjoying the sound of this machine. I didn't think I was fussy about a machine making noise so I don't have to sew by hand. However, I like the sound much more than my older machine, so it's a keeper.

I have Brother LS14S and i was surprised when i watched cd manual (in every set) that its sew leather .I try it (needles 1 of each type added to set in tine of purchase) you can make pvleather ,medium thickness leather ,towels, vinyl,waterproof canvas . You can buy extention table what enable you to make quilting small and big. HAVE LEVER FOOT AND LOT OFF EXTRA FEETS WHAT YOU CAN BUY TO MAKE DRESSES ,DECORATIVE CLOTHING ,CURTAINS ,BAGS .....ABSOKUTLY LOVE MY MASHINE CALL HIM "MY HAPPY TOY".

Sooo glad I found your channel! Could you do a quick tutorial on how to hem fabric patches please? I make my own patches which I sew onto my jackets and I am trying to figure out how to run a hem around the fabric patch to stop fraying. I don't know whether to urn the fabric over and stitch the fold or if I could just stitch around the edge of the fabric. My Mom bought me a Singer for x mas and I'm totally new to using a machine, before this it was always dental floss and hand stitching so this is a bit of a learning curve. Looking forward to checking out your hoodie tutorial! Cheers Dude!
Are you machine embroidering? Normally I just satin stitch around the patch, cut it out, and put fray check all the way around it to keep it from fraying I've never heard of hemming a patch before? Sorry, I just may need some more info :)
@@TockCustom Thanks, that's food for thought! I'm only just starting with my machine so no embroidering yet. I create the image for my patch by drawing it onto label paper, then cutting out everything but the negative space and apply paint or bleach, like a paper silk screen. Over time the patch starts to fray away if I leave it in my folder. I didn't think of stitching before I cut it out and had never heard of fray away before. Thanks for the info, this has been bugging me for a while now! Cool channel btw :)
Absolutely! It operates like any basic machine, and its so reliable that you'll actually enjoy learning with it. As you get more comfortable with sewing, you'll realize this machine can handle pretty much anything you throw at it too :)
A walking foot is a type of presser foot that with "step" forward with each stitch. Certain materials like vinyl have kind of a tacky surface, so the traditional presser foot will kind of stick to that surface. The walking foot eliminates that issue. There is also something called a "Roller Foot" or "Rolling Foot" that will allow materials to slide more easily.

One question.....did you have a leather needle in it when sewing the leather? I am a huge Brother fan and I have a 'few' (5 or 6)....sewing, embroidery and serger.
Yes, definitely use a leather needle when doing work like this. This machine also came with 5 very dense high quality needles for extreme heavy duty work, which are excellent! I'm also a HUGE fan of Brother machines, and highly recommend this for lots of different products! Thank you so much for the comment :)
You certainly don't need a machine this robust to hem jeans. It'll totally work, but truly any machine should be able to do that. If it can't... it's probably not a very good machine lol
@@TockCustom I have a White sewing machine that couldn’t handle it. It seems to me not many machines can handle that spot where the seams are turned up. Getting up and over that hump even with a hump jumper is a needle breaking nightmare. I really do appreciate your input as I’m an occasional sewer and am really sick of fighting with my 2006 white!!!
I did some more tests with a stronger needle and some heavier thread, and it did 26 layers of canvas and 6 layers of leather... I had to end the test because I couldn't physically fit any more material between the plate and the presser foot. Seriously crazy!
Yep! All schmetz needles are universal, so you can certainly use them. They are very good, but there are better (stronger) leather needles out there that are less likely to break. Just have to do a bit of research. Thanks for watching!
I would like to shorten sleeves on a leather jacket. Does this machine allow you to put sleeves on it and accomplish that task or must I still pay the local tailor to do it? Also, unlike other "beginner" machines, I do not see tension or stich design wheels (or hear any reference to these features), so how can you use it like other machines?
Have any of you sewn cork fabric or pleather with this machine? I’m looking for a heavy duty machine that I can use to sew purses. And have you tried different thread weights, in the bobbin especially. I have 3 sewing machines; none of which will allow a decorative heavy thread in the bobbin, and none perform too well with heavier top thread either.
How do you think this machine would do on strap connectors made with 4 layers of faux leather being sewn to a layer of interfaced cotton and waterproof canvas?
Oh this would have a very easy time with that. Faux Leather is just vinyl, and any standard machine can handle that, so this would be a breeze for what you described for sure :)

You're very welcome! I've been using this machine for over 5 years now, still love it! And actually they don't sell it anymore, they upgraded the model from the SE-400 to the SE-600/625, and from what I hear, its AMAZING!

Does it count if you are sewing through the same holes repeatedly? What happens if you sew through all layers at one time without any previous holes in the fabric? Asking for someone else.
The odds of me going through the same stitch holes on the fabric and leather parts is extremely low. I do remember that the back ends of the examples had bobbin threads that did not match up at all, so I'm pretty sure it was going through fresh material each time. If I was able to go through the same stitch holes it would have been slightly easier on the machine, but even with the leather it would still create a lot of resistance for the needle. Hope this makes sense, thanks for the question!

I was using a heavy duty leather needle with this machine. You can find Leather needles at most sewing shops no problem. Also for this test I just used standard Gutermann Sew-All thread. Nothing fancy at all. Very impressive actually, I bet with a better needle and some upholstery thread this could do a lot more!
So with the gutterman sew-all thread and heavy fabrics it will sew with ease. My question is, is that thread okay to use in a real project/bag? As far as strength is concerned will it hold up?
The machine came with some reinforced leather needles, which are incredible. I'm sure regular Schmetz Leather Needles would work pretty well too, those are strong

I probably could... but there is no practical application to using a zigzag stitch when sewing heavy duty projects. Upholstery, leather, bag making... just not needed. The only time you'd ever need to zigzag stitch is with knits and stretch fabrics, or if you didn't have an overlock machine. So don't worry about that demonstration :)
Strange, practically the only channel that has videos on this machine.

I have a Juki HZL-f400 and it could never so that much, I do have a Juki 1541s Industrial for leather though

Have you used this machine with bonded nylon in top and bobbin? It’ll be interesting to know if it can take it...

Yep! All schmetz needles are universal, so you can certainly use them. They are very good, but there are better (stronger) leather needles out there that are less likely to break. Just have to do a bit of research. Thanks for watching!

you should also try slippery fabrics, they're a nightmare for home sewing machines as well.
This was a reinforced 20/120 leather needle... super heavy duty. Still cannot believe what this machine was able to do!

You might look into a sailrite for the heavy nylon. Its designed for industrial work at home or on a boat. Just an idea for consideration.

It was one of the manufacturer needles that came with the machine actually. There was a 5 pack of some bad-ass leather/ heavy denim needles

How does it do on vynil
This machine does terrific with vinyl! It's actually overkill, you can sew vinyl with pretty much any machine :)
Can you make a alligator skin wallet?
This machine could absolutely handle that!
