Excellent summary! I started on FCP 1.25 and switched to FCPX when released. Would never go back to moviola metaphor. In old FCP, I recall not wanting to touch the 'house of cards' once it was assembled. Move the wrong clip and all the timing slips. Fix it one place, it throws off another. And I didn't use 80% of the tools. FCPX is nothing like this. Sometimes I use 'all-day' Undo to test things, and then back out if it doesn't work, rather than making versions. In 10 years, FCPX has crashed many times, but I've never lost a minute of work, and only had to go to FCPX's own backup once. Old days sucked. I *really* appreciate FCPX. So fast. So simple. And no rendering! And the skimmer!! (I started on tape machines. I'd *repeatedly* spend hours re-watching ALL the footage and STILL not find a missing shot! Today we can use AI transcriptions to do 1st assembly via XML, and text search any other clips within FCPX. Our reliance on what we call 'A roll' means we can automate and use text tools to edit. The memory of having a client ask to move a section to another part of the edit fills me with dread! It was so painful to do in past NLE's and it would always break something in the timing. Tape to tape days! beta cam! Shuttle and Jog! SD resolution! Oh the dark ages! The old days did indeed suck! FCP allows for the fastest in and out of an edit. There isn't anything faster and easier to get to the creative part of it. There is a huge difference between "what the pros use" and "pro work" I love where this is all heading with the new tools available today. AI Editing is coming, but the core idea and story still needs to be solid to make it worth while watching. Thanks Brad for the trip down memory lane and the very thoughtful comment!
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. You added a audio clip below the timeline. Is is possible to turn off the attachment to the timeline - so the audio file will stay the same no matter what you do on the timeline. E.g. if you have multiple audiofiles below - you don't when them do move (you want them locked in their position) - to freely move the video clip around without worrying that the audiofiles moves?
Super awesome video. I use FCP for all of my videos, but in fairness I think I know nearly next to nothing about what it could actually do for me, this video however has opened my eyes and will probably be watched many times. I am going to check out your next vids about the keyboard shortcuts etc now. Thanks!!!

I can't find a solution anywhere... but my music track keeps going all the way to the bottom, below all the dialogue tracks... and with many dialogue tracks, it's annoying. I wish I could figure out how to get the music track closer to the top, and not have it always be sent to the bottom.

i would like to range select a video portion and delete it and the audio track that is attached isnt deleting the same range selection of the audio. How can i delete a portion of the video and delete the same audio portion ? Range selection is removing just the video.
That’s a great question, not sure if there is a way to do that, I will look into it. Otherwise it’s a great suggestion to send to apple! Thanks for watching and the comment Raquel!
Was confused about this as well. When using the trim tool, ROLL - grab the start or end handle on a clip and move the handle left or right - it will extend or shorten the clip accordingly. SLIP - click and hold somewhere in the middle of the clip, and it will keep the original clip length & timeline position but get a different portion of the footage from the original clip. SLIDE - hold OPTION key, click & hold somewhere in middle of clip, it will keep the original clip length and original clip footage, but slide it to a different position along the timeline. Explained well here: ua-cam.com/video/2Av-i8bJRMs/v-deo.html
bro... @7:02 i've always wanted to know how to turn "snapping" on and off but I could never find a video regarding it because I didn't even know the term for it😂 thank God I came across your video🙂
When I was starting in Final Cut, I despised the magnetic timeline because of the fact that when I delete a segment, or move a segment, anything linked to it gets deleted, which is good in most cases and bad in some. Overall, I learned to love it but I still wish Apple updated FCP to include the enabling/disabling of magnetic timeline.
Same, it was a bit of a mind warp to get a hang of, once it did though it was soooooo good for me. I would like apple to introduce better Audio Mixing tools and functions, as well as a robust collaboration workflow. That is the biggest thing missing. Thanks for watching and the comment!
Great video! For some reason on my Final Cut Pro the magnetic feature on the secondary storyline doesn’t work anymore. I’m guessing I disabled something. Do you know what I would need to click on to re enable the magnetic feature for secondary story timeline?
Thank you. I'm transitioning from Pinnacle Studio (on Windows) to Final Cut Pro on a Mac M1 Mini with Monterey. Lots of unlearning and relearning. I've used Skillshare and Ripple Training, but had difficulty with "the basics" of timeline editing. Your short video contains ALMOST EVERYTHING that I needed to get that "muscle memory" of keystrokes for basic editing. Yes, you are fast, but I don't mind at all pausing - trying something on Final Cut (with second monitor) and then going back - maybe two or three times. In doing so, I'm learning those keystrokes and jotting down a "cheat sheet" of the ones crucial for those basic things. I'm surprised someone hasn't produced such a "cheat sheet". The ones that exist are far too complicated. Regards.
That’s a great idea! I will create a most used keyboard cheat sheet. Thanks for the suggestion Terry! Also thanks for watching and the comment! Have a great rest of your day!

Hey Do you know how to reverse the timeline time back to counting correctly ? In my Final Cut Pro at the beginning of the video in the first 3 minutes it’s saying 37:18/31:00 instead of 3:00/31:00 it’s like in reverse idk how to really explain it 😩😩😭
Not exactly sure what you are seeing here, may you email (on the about page on the channel) me screen grabs of what you are seeing? Thanks for watching and the comment!
I just got the new version, and im having trouble, the clips use to move out of the way or scoot down and snap together. Now im not able to do that, the clip jumps out of position and I have to connect all the clips together to move as one, its so annoying. compared to how I use to work which was faster and more efficient
Use secondary storylines, select the b-roll clips you want and press "Option G". Now you'll have all the features of the magnetic timeline - around the 5:00 mark in the video. Thanks for watching and the comment!
This is sooo frustrating! I am used to ScreenFlow which does it right, but when I come to FCP it does everything wrong. What is going on? I drop a file to the TL and then I want to delete it but it deletes even the file to the left of it, WHY? FRUSTRATING. I try to extend a clip's right side in the beginning of my video and it is impossible. Everything moves the wrong way regardless of what I do. WHY? FRUSTRATING.
