in brief: The Art of Life...his father committed suicide when he was 10 and it led to deep depression and suicidal thoughts for Yoshiki. Art of Life is about learning to LIVE rather than die and the chaos that it descended/s into, and again coming out the other side.

I always felt his piano solo was a representation of the chaos that is life. Sometimes it’s beautiful and makes sense, sometimes it’s brutal and just doesn’t make any sense. Life is Art and art isn’t always easy to explain or comprehend.

It's Yoshiki exercising the emotional demons from his father's suicide and not being able to find his place in this world by doing the musical equivalent via Rachmaninoff motifs and pure unbridled emotion. The 2nd piano solo is akin to an instrumental play on Prince's When Doves Cry turned up to 11.

I view the piano solo in Art of Life as a verse of its own, without words but full of expression in a way words cannot represent.
It, like the song, starts calmly and becomes more intense over time, but this isn't without meaning or thought. The preceding chorus is full of confusion, frustration, and self-destruction. None of these things are "orderly" or structured, but the lyrics display these. To represent these feelings musically, you have to get creative. The piano is used to achieve this goal in the way of a chaotic piano solo. The feelings build and stack, and can become overwhelming as they overlay each other. But, you work through them. The calm becomes chaos, but it becomes calmer once again. The chaos is needed to process those feelings, and the chaos of the piano solo represents that.
The first verse immediately after the piano solo has a completely different tone to it. Though it's structurally similar to the first verse of the song after the guitars come in, it has a more positive vibe to it and talks more on freedom than imprisonment. The narrator doesn't feel held back anymore, and wants to be free. He was losing control, lashing out, and feeling trapped. He's gone through that now, and is on the other side of things. He's regaining control, and is choosing to continue by freeing himself from the barriers he himself put up.
The song itself is complex and full of surprises. I've listened to this song regularly since 2012 and still find myself learning new things about the song. There's so much to digest in the lyrics alone, much before we even consider how the music compliments them.

I know I'm only 10 minutes in, BUT I think I am realizing that THIS is exactly the type of metal/rock that I could listen to all day and night! I must have heard similar metal/rock music through my relatives (or maybe on the radio?) while growing up in the 70's and 80's, because this sounds so familiar to me. My parents were into Elvis, Kenny Rogers, Glen Campbell, Bing Crosby, etc, so I know I didn't hear rock or metal through them.

    Hello and greetings from Germany!
Absolutely love your videos, the BABYMETAL ones as well as other stuff and I'm glad you reacted to X Japan as well.
A little warning: This comment will not be short, since there are so many things to say about this band and the song as well. Just if you have the time, here's a little something to read for you.
X Japan was formed in the 1980s by Yoshiki, the drummer, pianist, songwriter and also bandleader of X Japan together with his long time friend and singer, Toshi(nowadays ToshI with a capital "I", more on that later),who knew each other since the age of 4.
They played metal, hardrock and also very beautiful ballads and have one of the craziest, saddest, but also most inspiring and heartwarming band histories of all time.
Yoshiki who also wrote this song, lost his father at the age of 10 when his dad committed suicide. He was very sad and depressed naturally, but his mom bought him a drum set, so he could bang on the drums instead of destroying the house or other stuff, because of the anger and pain he felt. This depression followed him through the years and through X Japan he had a way to express his feelings and his friend sung the lyrics to his life basically.
Art of Life was if I remember correctly the first time, when they wanted to expand to the US and the english speaking market. It is a song about depression. About the hopes that build up, that it is going to be better, but also the Rock bottom, where your hopes get crushed and knock you down again. That I think is the reason for the piano solo in the middle of the song. It always builds up, to something beautiful, but gets crushed down and it doesn't sound nice. Since depressions are not very nice, the "ugliness" and disharmony in that solo are there to represent that struggle to get yourself back up, but getting knocked down again and landing in a sort of repetitive circle, which also makes the listener feel rather uncomfortable. It is very expressive but also a little bit ugly at the same time, just like depressions can turn out to be. But it wouldn't be X Japan, if the ending would not give you just a little bit of hope. Bite your teeth together, because it's gonna get ugly, but in the end overcoming the depression and the circle, to live fully again, an "Art of Life" if you will.
That is my personal interpretation of this song, which is also one of few with all english lyrics, which explain quite good, what happens in the song musically.
For the band, they have a crazy story.
The bassist in this video is called "Heath" who replaced their original bassist "Taiji", because Yoshiki and Taiji had some undisclosed but serious issues with each other. Unfortunately Taiji died in 2011 I think it was also by suicide, but there are several fishy things about that as well. But this would be another story of it's own.
The both guitarists are "Pata" and "Hide". Hide Was the one with the huge hair and crazy solos and he became a very big star on his own, since all of them had solo careers as well.
Hide was doing well in his solo career.
But in 1997 X Japan announced their breakup as well as one last concert, "The Last Live", because their singer had married and got dragged into a cult by his wife called "Home of Heart". It had all the things modern cults can ask for: Separating you from your family, getting the best out of you, namely your money and vigorous verbal and physical abuse. But he was brainwashed by them into thinking his band and his band members were pure evil and he had to separate himself from them.
The Last Live of X Japan was held at the Tokyo Dome on December 31st, 1997.
11 days after Su-Metal from BABYMETAL was born, who wore a neckbrace as a Hommage to Yoshiki. To me it's like a line, that brought me and many others so many fond and great memories as well as the pure joy about music back.
Back to X Japan though. After their last live, they disbanded and everyone did their own thing.
Unfortunately as of May 2nd, 1998, Hide the guitarist died officially by suicide, but some of the band members argued that he also could have got drunk, because he was a heavy drinker at that time and wanted to make some exercises for his neck, by hanging a towel on a doorknob and putting it under his chin. They said, he might have fallen asleep while doing that and hung himself accidentally. Maybe that was just said to ease the pain of his fans, because some of them also committed suicide following the news of his death. There is also video footage from his burial, where thousands of people went out on the streets, to say one last goodbye to their hero.
That was also the last time the remaining band members saw each other for several years.
As of 2008, X Japan came back together. The singer who was still in a cult at that time, was advised by the leaders of the cult, that a reunion could make more money which they can use for their purposes. He went along with it, but this was also his start to get out of there. The cult demonized X Japan all of the time and now they wanted him to reunite with them, which made him doubt their honesty. And when he met with Yoshiki and they talked about old days in school etc. he was feeling relieved and just happy, which he couldn't feel in the cult. And in 2009 he finally managed to leave the cult and divorce his wife who lured him into it in the first place. As a result of that and because the cult had rights on his name "Toshi" he simply changed his public name to "ToshI", so that they can't squeeze anymore money out of him.
Since then X Japan played numerous concerts and invited a guitarist from another band called Luna Sea, "Sugizo" to play with them since Hide was not there anymore.
I can recommend the documentary called "We are X" which is available here on UA-cam with Spanish subs, but it's mostly spoken in English as well as a look at ToshIs book about his time and the strategies of the cult that he joined.
Anyone finishing to read this comment:Congratulations and have a very nice day!
    Rock on! 🤘🎌😎🎹🎤🎼🙅‍♀️X🙅‍♂️🎸🎻🥁😎🎌🤘

Yoshiki took off his coat and moved to the drums. He is also the "neck collar guy" that now symbolizes Japanese metal. Gene Simmons (Kiss) said that XJapan would have been one the biggest bands in the world if they had been western band.
The saddest and happiest photo I ever saw was of Yoshiki with Babymetal in London before Babymetal's Wembley Arena concert. The first by a Japanese band. The sadness is that XJapan was suppose to be the first, but they fell apart. He was of course there to congratulate them and wish well. The story of XJapan is tragic, you can look it up.

Think of the piano solo as a journey through life. The solo begins slowly, representing the birth of the person (who is Yoshiki’s father), and as it becomes more and more chaotic, it represents how life changes and struggles with itself, until a calm and slow end that represents the tranquility after death.”

"If these guys had been born in America or England, they would have been the biggest band in the world at the time." - Gene Simmons
"I wrote this song when I was in my early twenties. And we only played the full version twice.
I wish Hide were still here, miss you everyday.. RIP." - Yoshiki
Pretty much every metal band out of Japan in the last two decades were inspired & influenced by X Japan. As far as Japan is concerned, these guys are bigger than The Beatles, The Rolling Stones.... everyone & anyone. It doesn't matter who you compare them to, & they have the album sales to prove it. As for this song, it's a very personal piece for Yoshiki (drummer/pianist). Yes, that piano solo is nuts, because he's a bit nuts. It's not to everyone's taste, just like a painter going insane on a canvas may not be to everyone's taste. The man did not have an easy life growing up. It's basically a soundtrack to his life, & to many of their fans, it's a soundtrack to their life as well. The lyrics tell a very deep story & there's a reason I said this song is a masterpiece.
    Lyrics:
    Desert Rose
    Why do you live alone
    If you are sad
I'll make you leave this life
Are you white, blue or bloody red
All I can see is drowning in cold grey sand
    The winds of time
You knock me to the ground
    I'm dying of thirst
    I wanna run away
I don't know how to set me free to live
My mind cries out, feeling pain
I've been roaming to find myself
How long have I been feeling endless hurt
Falling down, rain flows into my heart
In the pain, I'm waiting for you
    Can't go back
No place to go back to
    Life is lost, flowers fall
    If it's all dreams
    Now wake me up
    If it's all real
    Just kill me
I'm making the wall inside my heart
I don't wanna let my emotions get out
It scares me to look at the world
Don't want to find myself lost in your eyes
I tried to drown my past in grey
I never wanna feel more pain
Ran away from you without saying any words
What I don't wanna lose is love
    Through my eyes
    Time goes by like tears
My emotion's losing the color of life
    Kill my heart
    Release all my pain
    I'm shouting out loud
    Insanity takes hold over me
    Turning away from the wall
    Nothing I can see
    The scream deep inside
Reflecting another person in my heart
    He calls me from within
"All existence you see before you must be wiped out
    Dream, reality, memories and yourself"
I begin to lose control of myself
My lust is so blind, destroys my mind
Nobody can stop my turning to madness
No matter how you try to hold me in your heart
Why do you wanna raise these walls
I don't know the meaning of hatred
My brain gets blown away hearing words of lies
I only want to hold your love
Stab the dolls filled with hate
    Wash yourself with their blood
Drive into the raging current of time
Swing your murderous weapon into the belly
    "The earth"
    Shout and start creating confusion
    Shed your blood for pleasure
    And what? For love?
What am I supposed to do?
I believe in the madness called "now"
Past and future prison my heart
    Time is blind
But I wanna trace my love
On the wall of time, over pain in my heart
    Art of life
    Insane blade stabbing dreams
Try to break all truth now
But I can't heal this broken heart in pain
Cannot start to live, cannot end my life
    Keep on crying
    Close my eyes
    Time breathes, I can hear
All love and sadness melt in my heart
Dry my tears, wipe my bloody face
I wanna feel me living my life outside my walls
You can't draw a picture of yesterday, so
You're painting your heart with your blood
    You can't say "No"
Only turning the wheel of time with a rope around your neck
You build a wall of morality and take a breath from between the bricks
You make up imaginary enemies and are chased by them
    You're trying to commit suicide
    You're satisfied with your prologue
Now you're painting your first chapter black
You are putting the scraps of life together
And trying to make an asylum for yourself
You're hitting a bell at the edge of the stage
And you are trying to kill me
I believe in the madness called "now"
Time goes flowing, breaking my heart
    Wanna live
Can't let my heart kill myself
Still I haven't found what I'm looking for
    Art of life
    I try to stop myself
But my heart goes to destroy the truth
    Tell me why
I want the meaning of my life
Do I try to live, do I try to love in my dream
I'm breaking the wall inside my heart
I just wanna let my emotions get out
    Nobody can stop
    I'm running to freedom
No matter how you try to hold me in your world
Like a doll carried by the flow of time
I sacrificed the present moment for the future
I was in chains of memory half-blinded
Losing my heart, walking in the sea of dreams
    Close my eyes
    Rose breathes, I can hear
All love and sadness melt in my heart
    Dry my tears
    Wipe my bloody face
I wanna feel me living my life outside my mind
    Dreams can make me mad
    I can't leave my dream
    I can't stop myself
    Don't know what I am
    What lies are truth?
    What truths are lies?
I believe in the madness called "now"

Yoshiki-“I think I tried to convince even myself not to die. Try to keep going. It's a very positive message I think. Because I was very suicidal. I just hated life a lot of times. That's also the message for people, also myself as well. I had to convince myself to keep going. Then I wrote the song.”

"Piano guy" is also that beast of a drummer. Yoshiki was a fucking monster in his prime. There's still some debate as to how they pulled off the transition to the piano solo. Some say it was a tech wearing a wig and that particular track was pre-recorded, others say it was a mirrored screen that was pre-recorded. Yoshiki's piano was live, there was a looper on some of what he played so he could harmonize with himself. The piano solo is supposed to represent a mental breakdown and recovery.

This might be one of the best live performances of a rock symphony ever. In the beginning of this band, the band members were crazy on stage, running from one end to another, rock and roll 100%. In this I think Yoshiki was such an insane perfectionist that nobody dared risk missing a note, so they are just concentrating. Not that they aren't all exceptional musicians, but you gotta admit that is a long, intricate song. That Yoshiki is a machine, isn't he? One of the fastest drummers in japan when they started. Try this one or anything on the Chi To Bara tour really!

Toshi singer was a powerful athlete in H.S., Yoshiki the pianist/drummer/lyricist/composer was every day of his childhood expected to perish because of the weakness of his body. Everything is in their documentary movie. Very very Strange And interesting story. Have you done Kuranai? Sugizoi the new guitarist plays violin while Yoshiki plays piano. Tears and Endless Rain Excellent too.

They pave the way for the Rock music scene in Japan. There is these pre XJapan and post XJapan. In other words most of the Japanese band you have reacted to, it is safe to say they are influence by XJapan. Even my current favourite too, Babymetal.
Another to note the composer of this song the drummer/pianist, have classical background. He compose most if not all Xjapan songs.
Yes. And the story of this songs is the grief of a young boy(Yoshiki) who lost his father to suicide.

And yeah, pretty new to X Japan. I know Yoshiki is an awesome musician, pianist, drummer, composer... But shit, that stamina!
    Great thing
about songs like this is, you can then watch endless rain at the last live and go 10:56 mins, geez that song was short AF

the piano dude is missing? that's why he's the same one who plays the drum and he's the mastermind behind X-Japan and play multiple instruments, oh btw Babymetal (SuMetal and MoaMetal) dedicated a short vid of greetings birthday last year wich he saw while he was interviewed, he's the real God Of Metal in Japan if not the very same Fox God, Yoshiki Hayashi, or just *Yoshiki* ._.
I came to know this band around 2005 by the same friend who later on show me Babymetal in 2010, crazy uh? Every now and then i listen this song once in while because it flows a lot of emotions when you listen and it all involves a state of mind, i guess that's the fact that they played this live only twice in their life have a reason.
Btw Yoshiki is the very same who got injured bad for headbanging in a live concert and he was took for emergency to the hospital after that he was wearing neckbrace on live concerts, and that's the tribute you'll see in Babymetal Headbanger! song and many more live concerts using everyone the neckbrace, there's no doubt KobaMetal is huge X-Japan fan or Yoshiki at least.
The last song i heard from Yoshiki (besides the Endless Rain feat. a lot of artists including Babymetal last year) was Red Swan feat Hyde (not the same Hide who belong to his band and died) wich was featured as opening song for Attack On Titan Season 3 (2018), and it was beautiful.
Thanks for doing this and hopefully you will find more meanings in the box comment and specially after hearing in your lonely time \m/

I think yoshiki made (drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer) made it that way intentionally.

This song is a real journey... It's kinda repetitive in parts though... Could have cut some bits down a bit lol, but it works well enough for having in the background lol. It's not my favourite song of theirs, but I enjoy the novelty of it.
My interpretation of the song was that it was basically a representation of someone's life... A bit overly repetitive and long... Has its ups and downs... Some parts are great, some are annoying... It can be a struggle... But then you get to the end and you're tired, but you also kinda want to do it all again lol.

    • @AllegedlyLuca
      @AllegedlyLuca 3 роки тому +2

I imagine many, but the change wasn't made because of Taiji's departure. They wanted to jump overseas to the American music scene, but they already had a band over there called X. To differentiate themselves from this other group, they became X Japan.
I do wonder what sort of music they would've continued to produce had Taiji remained with them.

    • @Mugenstylo
      @Mugenstylo 3 роки тому +1

@@AllegedlyLuca They would have become even bigger. Taiji was influential in their earlier works. Checkout his composed songs for X. And his tapping slapping skills is second to none. Heath is nothing near in comparison and bass sound was tuned down for a reason after Taiji left.

Yeah, the piano part in the middle is not a strong part of the song and it should have been cut or shortened in the song, and I think the record version of the songs mid-piano part is even more painful to listen because it's even more chaotic. I guess it's just Yoshiki's (the drummer, pianist and composer of the song) trying to be artsy I guess. But I guess the interpretation of life sometimes being chaotic is quite right. Otherwise I have always loved the rest of the song. And it's been years since I watched this performance, since my dvd of it is in my basement. It gave me goosebumps and tears at the same time again.
But thanx for reacting to this, if you ask me. This song marked the end of the band, and was their last speed metal inspired song and they only released one good song (Dahlia) after this.
