    Awesome build! I like that fact that it's portable & can be broken down easily.

      Thanks! That's probably the best part I like about it too. It doesn't really take up any additional space in my shop when it's not deployed.

    Very nice design! Any details on the exhaust fan you used? I watched the other video but you didn't mention anything about CFM, motor HP, etc.

    • @TommyTompkins
      @TommyTompkins  Місяць тому

      Hey thanks! Unfortunately, I don't know the exact CFM or motor details. If I remember correctly, I think the motor is a 0.75 HP but not exactly sure. I picked up the entire blower unit with motor on Craigslist.

    This is really cool. Only thing I would add is a magnehelic gauge on the suction side of the first filter so you can see what kind of pressure drop you have across the filter. Then you could easily monitor when to swap the filters out.

    Brilliant idea, Tommy. The genius is in it's simplicity. You took basic things and simplified a painstaking task that would have taken most people hours to complete. Terrific solution as usual. I would assume you're an engineer of some sort with your creativity and design talents. If not you missed a heck of an opportunity! I truly enjoy your builds. Well done, sir. Troy

      Thanks for the kind words Troy! My dad is a retired ceramic engineer that worked on aerospace applications for 3M and he was always building model airplanes and things. My grandpa was a salesman for Johnson and Johnson but had a passion for woodworking and did that as a hobby for decades. Most of my tools were my grandpa's. Technically, I'm not an engineer but I did go to school for computer science and have been working in software development for the last 17 years. I'm just having a little fun.

      Not yet, just in the process of finishing my work bench with 12 drawers under. My shop is small 14"x 10" so space is limited. I rescued a kitchen extractor from a dumpster last year and its very powerfull so I was going to make an air cleaner but I think ill try and add on the fume extractor as well and vent to the outside.

    Tommy, very nice video. As always the video quality and narrative was top notch. You share that talent with a couple in Idaho building their home and a saw mill guy out in Oregon. Your innovation in this project was excellent too but would it not have been easier and a bit cheaper to take the stands outside and forget the booth and vacuum setup?

    • @TommyTompkins
      @TommyTompkins  5 років тому

      Thanks Dennis! For me, painting outside isn't an option from about October to April. At the time when I filmed this video, it was only about 10 degrees F outside but a nice 70 degrees in the shop. With that much spraying, I had to vent outside otherwise the explosion hazard with my Reznor heater might have been too much. Also, with varying weather patterns it can get in the way of deadlines and I was up against a wall getting these Pegs & Jokers boards delivered. It's nice knowing that I can easily deploy this setup and control the weather in my shop for future projects :)

    Okay... new Subscriber...LOLs
    Good content.
    Awesome how you could show the paint particle pick up.
    Id be keen to see you use both sides of the fan housing...Double dutch...Duct..lol ... There is a corrugated duct pick-up factor, plus extra flow equals higher RPM electric motor that equates to higher through put. ;)
    Two pick ups(filters) in the booth would mean double life... or more with the duct factor.

  • @cmsjustin
    @cmsjustin 5 років тому

    This is so cool! Did you consider putting a piece of the corrugated plastic over the filter, leaving a large gap between so that the air could still flow in from the sides? It seems like you could avoid replacing the filters so often if they weren't being sprayed directly onto.

    • @TommyTompkins
      @TommyTompkins  5 років тому

      I didn't experiment with that at all but that's not a bad idea! Thanks for the suggestion.

    I’m curious how overspray was with this setup. Did you find it caught all the spray and kept it in the booth?

  • @DavidRodriguez-zq6fl
    @DavidRodriguez-zq6fl 3 роки тому

    can you leave the air stay inside by adding better filters as well as carbon bag, after all thats a lot of filtration, seems safe. i use small lures creates waterbed paints. i'm thinking of a set up like this and add a heap filter at the box above the head. instead of letting go the heat in winter. I will add a separate air cleaner unit as well.
    let me know your input.

    • @TommyTompkins
      @TommyTompkins  3 роки тому

      I haven't done it but if you can find carbon filters that fit I would assume that it would work? Maybe you can test it and report back to us :)

    you could make a hand crank on the bottom so you didnt need to reach up over top with a pair of carnage bolts and a block

    You really need to get a real dust adapter for that Radial Arm saw...I made a bunch of adapters for my equipment with my 3D Printer and about an hour in Fusion360. Took 2 days to print them all, but they are all custom, and all fit perfectly.

    • @TommyTompkins
      @TommyTompkins  5 років тому

      My dust collection box actually works amazingly well with hardly any dust escaping when cross cutting. Ripping with the dust port on the blade guard works just ok, but it could be a lot better. I don't have a 3D printer but I'd be interested to see what you've made.

    • @WreckDiver99
      @WreckDiver99 5 років тому

      @@TommyTompkins I'll see about putting them up on thingiverse or the like. VERY simple things really. I'm sure the collector works great, but all that duct tape...LOL...just made me crack up.

    • @TommyTompkins
      @TommyTompkins  5 років тому

      @@WreckDiver99 Oh you mean the duct tape on the blade guard...yeah that's not the optimal solution obviously lol! The dust collection box with all the holes in it is the one that I was referring to before which has outstanding dust collection (for cross cutting).

      @@TommyTompkins Yea...I didn't mean your other duct work which is FREAKING COOL! I have an old (probably 60+ year old) Craftsman Radial Arm saw that I'd like to refurbish. Your Videos on that have been stored away for future reference...it's how I found your channel. Some really cool stuff you did. That's why when I saw all that duct tape I was "You gotta fix that". LOL
