Took me ages to figure out that was the check I was missing

So many pokes from first 2 gens have due to Gameboy audio channel restrictions and cartridge capacity.
Mewtwo and parasect are another example

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but why are the pokegear components required in a FIR? Can you not just surf from Fuchsia around to Pallet without waking up the Snorlax? I mean, I take it there is a reason, but I don't remember that route being inaccessible or a one-way in vanilla Crystal

In vanilla Gen II and Gen IV, the route south (Route 19) is blocked by boulders until you access it from the other side (Route 20) for the first time. Otherwise, you could circumvent Snorlax in vanilla as well.

bulbapedia says that the route is blocked in gen2 and to unblock it you need to arrive from cinnabar island.
