I grew up with a shar pei. He couldn't stand other dogs but had no problems with cats. Id stick my hand through his tail loop and call it a dog bracelet lol
My Shar Pei was on her way to a dog home. I hijacked her. Fantastic dogs. I have a few problems with skin and ear problems but now under control. She is like a giant grumpy old tomcat. Very singular. She is my dog and hardly acknowledges other people. Loves cats, hates birds, tolerates other dogs. She is very smart. Very obedient until she wants to do something, then she ignores me. She is a great guard dog. I am totally in love with her. Good with kids. All in all, great dogs.
I just took in a 7 year old brush coat that has suffered with food allergies his entire life and smelled so bad nobody wanted to be around him. On day one, I switched him to a plant based diet and within a week his odor was gone, his coat was showing improvement and he stop scratching. It’s week 5, and he’s just beautiful. His coat is thick and lush and he has the energy of a year old dog. He’s like a damn boxer dog! I feed V-dog kibble and mixed with a homemade veg food and he absolutely loves it.
I’ve had 4 Shar peis in my lifetime and all of them sound like Nico… including killing a bird on a leash once. 😬 None ever had allergies, ear problems or roll irritation. Great protection and loved kids. If they ever growled (which was rare) you knew it was about to go down! Very independent and can’t be bothered by much. I need more Nico! ❤
I’ve lived with 3 pei and took them to work in their own car. Ofc a convertible . I wasn’t apart from them for more than a couple hours and they lived close to 14 years. They all gone now and am only just able to look at dogs again. Sad when they go. I would have two harnessed to my downhill MTB and wow that’s fast. Let me know and I will help with what’s best.
I tried to stop my dogs fighting so I been bit by a normal dog before but a bit from a pei is just:0Their teeth bend back and are serrated but also come together top n bottom like scissors. This bending back is the second lock jaw and why they don’t need the main one to be that strong. Their bite is one of a kind and is a shocker. Am still in shock lol. Master engineering that I tell ya.

@blumpkinspicelatte4580 Thanks for your comment! We've definitely tried a variety of methods to manage our Shar-Pei's behavior. I can see where you're coming from regarding the alpha dynamic. However, anyone who truly knows this breed understands that they're incredibly strong willed and unique. It's not as simple as just asserting dominance. Shar-Peis often have distinct personalities that require more nuanced management. In our case, it's not about enabling but rather recognizing that our female has a bit more of a dominant personality, and we're doing our best to create harmony while respecting each dog's temperament.
