Peter, I agree with you 100%. When the “show” becomes more important than the race, I think it's time to rethink the whole venue. Especially when the safety of the drivers is not given top priority. ALL street circuits compromise safety in one way or another. That's the nature of the beast, and for me, that is unacceptable.

I'm a vegas local and a lifelong f1 fan. My wife and I scraped up our only $500 and bought tickets to practice for me and my father.. This was handled so horribly and was such a terrible experience. We were there from 7:00pm until 1:30am when they kicked us out. It was awful, no communication, just all around bad experience.

I was watching it live here from the Netherlands as Ted Kravitz was watching you guys on the grandstands ( the last 50ish hardcore fans who had endured the lengthy wait) getting kicked out, and he got seriously emotional because of it, in the sense that he truly felt so bad that the true F1 fans ( not the whole show thirsty mob ) could not be allowed to witness that for what they had payed for whilst sitting through the bore and drag of the entire outlet incident debacle in the wee hours of dawn, to be able to watch the 2nd practice session. It reminded me of when i was at Spa in 2021, as we stood in the rain from 5am till 8pm for the love of F1 with hope it would eventually provide us with a race, It didn't and F1 didn't do anything to compensate us true fans, were sorry, that was it.. In your situation i can only imagine how painful it must have been with your father in the predicament he currently finds himself in, Much respect to you, and your father and i wish you both all the best and a quick and steady recovery for your dad. Was waiting for this ... I have said it on another platform. My problem is not so much Vegas but the contradiction in claiming it's about growing the sport yet when you look at the entire process so far, very little has to do with actual F1. Take for example the opening, with all those screens the least they could have done is show 2-3 mins expose on F1, the highlights, historicals, the quickest pitstops, overtakes just to show the new viewers what F1 is about, instead they spent 30mins on musicians and only showed the drivers who are supposed to be the main acts for a few seconds like they are just props to support their concert. That is not pro F1. If they wanted to do this maybe they should have looked at world cups and how they do openings.
Also the issue of the drainage, true it is not new, and perhaps in my view is precisely why they should have learnt from previous incidents to ensure it doesn't happen here.... But I guess lessons to be learnt. So far I can't agree more with Max... It's such a fuss for show and 1% actual racing.

The manhole incident just....I don't know how many times the same mistakes keep happening - I've been thinking that they only pay lip service to safety these days as there's been a real decline in standards since Liberty took over. Oh well, we'll see how the rest of this race pans out.

I agree 100% with you Peter and as a 40+year F1 supporter I am sick of DTS fans and American involvement in the sport, surviving quiet well without it for 1/2a century, having a US GP is great but it should be done the F1 way not the American way

Hang on. Not all Americans are watching F1 because of DTS. I’m an American and have been a fan since Mario Andretti was racing. It was really difficult to watch then because there was very little coverage in the US. Keep in mind that not all American fans are “DTS fans”. Some of us are purists and hate what Liberty has done to our sport. I do hope that Max’ dominance has put off these “DTS Fans” and they move on.
I live 90 minutes from Watkins Glen and would love that circuit to be upgraded for F1. There is only one US GP and that is in Austin. The other two are not really F1 races but rather circuses with few fans and only celebs who want to be seen. I’d rather go to Montreal or Austin.

But also the fact that the GP made life hell for local people for (at least) five days or so.

absolutely could not possibly agree with you, and Max, any more, Peter.
This is what the ideal F1 calendar should be:
    -Season opener in Melbourne
    -Sepang
    -Istanbul
    -Hockenheim
    -Monaco
    -Silverstone
    -Montreal
    -Austria
    -Magny Cours
    -Hungaroring
-spa the last race before summer break again
-monza (with gravel around the parabolica again)
    -suzuka
    -CotA
    -season closer in Sao Paulo
MAYBE throw in Bahrain, Barcelona, or Imola too, but that's it; absolutely no more races than that... March to October, like how it used to be. If a bunch of Arab oil sheiks want to drop some coin to have races around their fake marinas, then we can have "wild card" slots on the calendar with circuits that rotate every few years.
If they come even close to adopting a calendar like that (with no Miami, no Mexico City, no Qatar, no Abu Dhabi, etc), along with going back to smaller, more nimble cars again that aren't these understeering, lumbering behemoths that look like parade floats when they're going through slow corners, and show signs that they are phasing out DRS, then I will go back to being as head-over-heels in love of a die hard fan as I used to be when I first started watching. But until then, they're on thin ice with me personally, and I'm currently counting my days for how much longer I'm honestly going to keep dedicating time to this sport.... and I say this as somebody who hasn't missed a single race since 2005 (and watched most of the qualifying sessions as well), for whatever that's worth.
First and foremost priority before any of that other stuff though is completely scrapping these silly SpRiNt WeEkEnD sideshows... ugh.
If they make those changes, then I seriously couldn't care less about anything else going on. They could still have celebrities I don't care about taking up screen time, keep the Netflix and Disney programs, increase the idiotic hybrid electrification, have one guy winning every race by a minute, Brad Pitt, whatever... That's all water under the bridge. But imo, they are on life support (increase in number of fans doesn't matter if all these new fans only casually tune in to an occasional race here or there, while they piss off & shove out the die hard ones. Quality > quantity) until they 1) get rid of the sprints 2) put the cars on a diet, and 3) reduce the calendar, and thus, viewer saturation. While we're at it, clean up the stewarding too, and stop trying to generate chaos.
If you look at what happened with the decline of nastycar after that series peaked in the 90s, it's hard to deny that Formula 1 is taking the first steps down that exact same path with all the gimmicky changes they've been making.

Saying that Ecclestone tended to stay away from new street circuits is not quite true after all the problems that the Singapore GP supposed (breathing problems for drivers, overheating, poorly designed corners and kerbs...) and after the fiasco that was Valencias GP from both an economic and a sporting point of view. They just had less races than now

Pete, do you think Toto has some skin in the game when it comes to the Vegas GP? He seemed to be overly aggressive in his defence of the track yet was heavily on George Russell's side when a man hole cover went through his Williams in Baku 2019.

  • @f.kieranfinney457

Just last year Toto was mugging for the cameras about porpoising and how dangerous it was and how important driver safety was.
When it was effecting his team. He tried shaming other teams for not caring and got the FIA to change the rules, hoping to gain an edge. Where’s that political power brought to bear on this, Toto? The outrage and hand wringing.
He’s a massive hypocrite and, frankly, becoming a caricature and a joke.

Hi Peter - I have been watching F1 since Jackie Stewart days and also helped out a F3 team. I totally agree with all your comments. I just hate all the modern hype and all the bickering, never a fan of any street circuit especially Monaco - modern cars are just too big. Plenty of traditional circuits in Europe for the season - I often wonder why I am still watching it.

imagine F1 has closed off fan areas for fp2
thats what fans deserve for supporting F1 and encouraging them to concentrate more on a show theme than the actual SPORTING EVENT
supporting mediocrity will always result in failure

I've been an American F1 fan since late in the 94 season. I've been following casually for the last decade, but in the 2021 season renewed my interest again. I love what Formula 1 is doing. However, Vegas is just way too much. I understand what they are trying to do, but It's almost SAD. Indy makes sense, Watkins Glen, tracks with racing heritage and we end up with a circus....

I could not agree more. Besides Peter’s well put arguments, I absolutely was disgusted by Toto saying: ‘..nobody is watching in European time anyway.’ I’ve got news for Toto: loads of European fans set their alarms if needed. Besides: FP 1 and 2 were on decent hours in European time. It was the home crowd who had the disadvantage. Apart from fans being sent off from the stands… If Vegas is supposed to be setting the new standards (quoting Toto), you might want to make sure the home crowd is not already in bed or allowed to stay in the stands. And don’t shrug off an entire continent of racing fans. That should never be the result of ‘setting the new standard’.
