What's the purpose of running gtrs through a DI before the amp?

He can re-amp and adjust tones after its recorded to better suit the mix. Its basically a backup plan

Oh wait so he goes amp -> DI -> back into amps for re-amping? I thought he was saying he started with DI into amps and that confused me

No, a Di box is like a signal splitter. so one clean unprocessed signal goes straight into his interface or A/D converter which is recorded on his Daw. The second is being processed by his regular amp.chain as he explains in the video. Knowing Putney he may have a preamp some where before or after the DI to colour and tone shape the dry signals. And then from there if he ever wanted to change the tone he could run the DI back into the amp chain because it's already recorded. Hope that makes more sense?

in addition to reamping, having di tracks is a huge help when it comes to editing.

i dont like how you mix, what seems like at least 5 mics in this video, into one track before recording.... unless you keep notes on amps, cabs, mics, and levels. but hey, youve got it DI, so whatever
